The "Help! How do I..." Thread

so is it possible to have the icons on my gmail and gchat and handcent to show that i have a message in the icon versus just having just at the top of the my tb?

OK, here is one where I am pretty sure I know the answer, but just for grins...

My app list is crowded with all sorts of junk that I'll never use, yet I don't seem to be able to delete the trash. Is there any less obvious way to decide I really don't want a blockbuster app loaded on my phone? Or did someone get paid extra to make us deal with it forever?

There's a great widget in the app market called "Gmail Unread Count" - just put that on your homescreen rather than the app shortcut. I don't think there's a gchat/Talk equivalent, though, and I don't use Handcent so I can't help ya there.

everyone's talking about battery life percentages. When I go into Settings>About Phone>Battery I just see a meter measuring the battery life. How do I switch this to see an exact number.. i.e. 37%?

There is no setting for this. You have to download an app that places the percentage in the status bar. Go to the market and search for battery and you'll see plenty to choose from.

Or you could download the HTC battery widget by going to the personalize section -> widget -> Get more HTC widgets -> download Battery.

I don't see a thread for asking simple questions, so I'll give this a shot.

As for my simple question, I am new to Android and find the volume rocker on the TB way too easy to adjust accidentally. The ring/notification volume on my phone keeps getting turned off while in my pocket. Is there a way to turn the rocker off entirely and just lock the volume?

I had the same problem - Volume Locker was the solution. You can change the volume using the rocker but it will reset to what you set up in Volume Locker after 20 seconds or so.

downloaded mp3s not recognized

Hi all,

I'm new to Android (from WebOS) and am having a hard time with music on my TB.

I've downloaded some albums and they're stored in a folder on my SD card. How can I get the default music player to find and add these mp3s to the library and play them?

Thanks in advance!

It's a widget in the HTC market. Go to Menu>Personalize>Widget>Browze All HTC Widgets. If it's not there do the same except for the last part you do "Get More HTC Widgets".

How do I turn off the geotags (I think that's what they are called) when I take photos?
EDIT: Please disregard my question, I found it.

settings>about phone>Battery>Battery Use

I think this is what you were referring to from earlier in the post

Branching off of this, how DO you add music to the phone via computer?
I mean, I can connect the phone and make it "disc drive" and see the mounted drive on my desktop.

But I do not see a "music" folder.
Do I need to create one?
Or do I just drag and drop mp3 files or mpeg-4 files to the mounted drive without a folder?

i connect to my computer via usb and just drag and dropped my music to a new folder. I use poweramp as my media player and in there you can have it scan your sd card for music.

What about the regular music application that came with the phone?
Will that work as well? Scanning the phone for music files?

Yes the stock music player will work as well. Mine scanned multiple music folders and sorted them by album complete with cover-art which was a nice touch.

How about stopping that preview of a text message?.. i dont want it flashing on the screen like that.

I feel the same way about the text preview appearing in the homescreen notification area. Does anyone know if it can be turned off?

Also, if it's helpful to others, my Gallery kept having troubles recognizing my pictures (either downloaded or taken on the camera). I would take or download a picture, it would immediately appear in the gallery, and then hours later they were gone. After pressing Gallery I would get the exclamation mark saying that the files couldn't be located.

I thought they were being erased. They weren't. I downloaded SDrescan and it solved the problem. Perhaps it's a noob problem/fix, but wanted to share in case it helped others.

Thanks.

i downloaded some files (email attachements) and Swype installer by mistake. where can i see those files so i can delete them and free up the space? thank you

In my experience the best app for finding and getting rid of this kind of stuff is Astro File Manager.

With the stock messaging app, no. However, Handcent will allow you to do this. Download from the market.

Yes. Many alternatives. For Handcent you can simply add the small widget and that will put the unread number on the icon.

For gmail, gmail unread count used to work but I don't know if it supports 2.2 devices.

IMO, the better alternative is SMS unread count classic. You can add the unread count to the stock messaging app icon, gmail, and even missed call number to the phone icon. Even has the ability to add custom icons.
