The "I'm waiting for sales to go live" thread

Really sad, as I'd love to see Android and Google continue to prosper, but there will have been a hell of a lot of ill will generated around the world today :-(
The problem isn't whether Google or Android can/will prosper but how successful their attempt to be a retailer of physical objects will be. Moving bytes is a lot easier than moving boxes filled with glass, silicon and plastic objects in the real world from point A to point B.

As I've noted before, the entire Google Play Devices section only has about a dozen items including cases, but it's clear that Google had a problem with the Nexus 7 launch that we here in America are about to learn whether they learned any lessons from. It's not that an outfit the size of Google doesn't have the resources to run a retail outlet (i.e. money is no object) but it's questionable whether there's someone with the practical know-how in charge to make things happen. It's not as if there aren't examples of how to do it out there; they just need to want to do it right.

People have been whipped into a frenzy for the past two weeks with previews and reviews; demand has been created and everyone is like the Fry meme. The question is whether Google has laid in what's necessary to actually take our money and give us stuff. If they can't do it, then they'll have to put it in retail stores which will increase costs and lower profits. It's in their interest to clue up and get this right, THIS TIME, RIGHT NOW.

Well, good thing I didn't stay up last night! It would've been a waste of time. Now at work and don't believe I will be able to get it today. That sucks, at least for me! :(

I guess I will get it on the next few days...or weeks?!

More like Next year. I'll get an use GS3/ONE S if anything happens.

People on this forum. Several hundred of them. And maybe a few thousand others. Google's going to have trouble determining demand, and the cost of producing too few units is free publicity while the cost of producing too many is excess stock on hand - which rapidly becomes untenable if you aren't making much money per unit.

Just like the Nexus 7, I'm sure tons of these are in the manufacturing pipeline but not fully built out yet, pending acceptance and real-world testing of the first batch. When people who buy the first round give their feedback, LG can make the necessary adjustments and get better units into the pipeline. (see the myriad threads about screen lift on the Nexus 7 as an example).

The Nexus 4 will be well-stocked for the holiday season, probably available in a shiny box at retailers like Staples, which is exactly where I got my Nexus 7. ;)

All the anger and derision in this thread makes me think back to a simpler time. When I was a little boy, there were toy stores that had lots and lots of toys. But the best toys....especially the new Star Wars stuff, was sold in Christmas catalogs, where you placed an order and it arrived close to Christmas. Having to wait for Christmas, when you already circled all of the ones you wanted, was fantastic! I remember a true appreciation for the anticipation. The wait was a part of the process.

Now, thanks in large part to the internet, waiting has become the enemy. I'll be excited to order and get the Nexus 4, when it's available :)

And if you want a better pre-order experience, go buy an unlocked iPhone for $800 that you have to jailbreak to use properly.

Chill and relax guys.

If what happened around the world today is any indication, 90 percent of the folks who want an N4 wont be able to order it.

Christmas wil just have to wait. Maybe by December 13 we can order an N4 at leisure. Until then dont get trolled by Google. lol

If this happens in USA then Google will officially have taken over the world. Outside of this board I don't know a single person who knows anything about this phone.

If this things sells out its because they purposefully wanted it to for the press.

I understand your thought process here and it warrants consideration. A demand that surpasses projections can elevate the "status" and make a product more appealing. For many uneducated consumers the product takes on a cult appeal. I beleive Apple has used this strategy very effectively in the past. I am hopeful that Google would not stoop to this type of mindless marketing and that any shortfalls in their supply chain logistics is due to a consumer demand that truely surpassed the sales projections calculated on previous sales. If my device is placed on a backorder and they have their supply chain prepared to meet demand real time and can put a device in my hands in a 10-14 day time frame then they will retain my confidence.

I really did hope that Google would have their ducks in a row and would deliver this launch with perfection. To this point we have not seen a launch from any vendor/developer that has met any of our expectations. If anyone can do it I would have thought Google could have pulled it off. With the advent of what occurred in the UK overnight that opportunity has already been missed. Let's hope their US launch goes a little better.

Thanks for wasting my time last night Google. Oh, and to the several posters with their "insider Google sources" or calling the "Google help desk" that said 12amPST time last night. I got a big can of FU just waiting for you! I know I'll be ready by 12pmEST today. Good luck everyone

[NEW] Nexus 4- $299 (8GB) / $349 (16GB) - Slickdeals.net

Plenty of ppl want this phone. I'm just hoping that somehow I can get in on time. I might end up with an 8GB if I only have that choice, or I might end up doing something even more crazy and paying T-Mo the extra $150.

Damn, trolled a THIRD time! :(

Google, sell this f***ing thing already and be done with it! Tired of the BS and the waiting! You're not gaining any supporters with this crap... You're actually pissing off people that WANT TO DESPERATELY GIVE YOU THEIR MONEY! LOTS OF IT! TAKE IT FOR F***'S SAKE ALREADY!

It looks more and more like Google is going to botch this release, sell at some stupid random hour, sell out in 5 mins with servers crashing left and right and a LOT of very pissed off, tired and sleep deprived customers left with nothing but a credit card and a whole lot of money burning a hole in their pockets and nothing to buy...

I have a feeling some other devices might actually benefit from Google's retail screwups...

There's a part of me that hopes that:
a) They have significantly more stock reserved for the US market, and
b) They've seen the fiasco in the Aus and Euro markets and will add server capacity to compensate.

I'm not optimistic about either one honestly.

It is frustrating. I was hoping it would be different since they were selling them directly with no prerders. What makes it bad is, this is the day and, nothing is on sale. It should have been on sale at 12:00AM PST/3:00AM EST, that seems fair. I've never heard of a online company waiting until 9:00AM PST/ 12:00PM EST to make a product available on launch day. I wonder what they are thinking about doing it this way.

Yeah this has been kind of a bummer. (Not sure why no pre-orders?) The N4 is going to be the first android device for me...I've been iOS for the last five years, but I've always been tantalized by android and I really, *really* like the look, specs, and carrier-free nature of this device. Oh well...gotta maintain a philosophical perspective I guess; my 4S will just have to suffice until I can actually get one of these bad boys on my doorstep. Good luck to everyone when zero hour finally arrives :)

Of course they have more stock for the US market, but also A LOT more people that want to buy it.
I mean, only a bunch of people know in Germany at which time it would release, and it was a mess already. In America nearly everyone knows by now the time, it'll end up in an even bigger mess most likely.
Google should just completely stop the sales and fix their problems, because they'll end up with many many more pissed off customers today.

I've already sold my BB9900 for this. I've been up all night, have scripts running + three browsers with the pages open. If I miss this, I'll be pissed.

I'm contemplating having my co-worker try at the same time I do, I don't care if I end up with an extra device or not, as long as I get one. (I'd sell the extra one to someone here at cost, if that happens)

Maybe Google realized they botched the Australian/Europe release so they're going to fix the North American one? They extended it to fix the errors. Just a thought.

Don't let me down Google!

I'm hoping the US sale will be much better. I'm also hoping that the "it doesn't have LTE" people stay away from my order!

You woud think a company of this stature would have enough server power to handle mass ordering : /

I wonder what they are thinking about doing it this way.

They are thinking that the local launch team who has to support and maintain the web site might be able to come in at a reasonable time and be at full staff, fresh and alert, so they can manage the server load? They are thinking that fulfillment can't really start until mid-morning so the trucks can roll at the end of the day? They are thinking that they can have a full phone staff for order-related questions without paying night differential?

Not everyone sets product launches at times where your entire staff has to shamble in bleary-eyed and then deal with nasty customers with a sense of entitlement.

THIS is also a huge problem. Seems like EVERYONE is running those scripts, killing the servers once it's actually released because suddenly thousands of people try to do the same thing.

Frankly, one of the biggest companies in the world who's rise to fame came from the most popular search engine should be able to handle me refreshing their page. Their problem, not mine.

I want both the N4 and N10 but have to decide which one to order first. With the way things are going overseas I may only be able to get one or the other. I think I will go for the tablet first since I already have a Note 2.

Bravo... best post today! This is friggin ridiculous on how the way Google has handled the Nexus 4 launch all over the world. The biggest freakin' internet company and their servers crash in < 5mins.. HAHAHA... love it
