The kinda-official LG G4 bootloop thread

My wife's G4 went belly up the day before yesterday. Its just over a year old. Took it in and within 24 hours it has a new motherboard all covered by warranty. If you have a G4, make sure pictures and important stuff gets saved to your SD card.

A few days ago a friend's V10 just begun bootlooping. There's a few reports online of similar incidents.

I had two G4 phones die within a week of one another with the bootloop, one mine, one my son's. Both after about 10 months of service.

My son's had a tiny tiny crack at the top of the bezel, which TMobile said would prevent them from sending back (mine was sent back and swapped.) So I sent that one back to LG, and they said the crack voided the warranty and they would have to do a full refurb on it which would cost $150. Well screw that - the crack is almost invisible unless you hold it up to the light in a specific way, and doesn't impact the functionality of the phone, nor did it cause the design flaw with the bootloop.

I tried multiple avenues of contact, and they all refused to take responsibility for the design defect. I wasn't about to spend $150 to fix their problem, especially since it seems some people have complained the defect returns after repair. When there is a design or manufacturing defect, a company should take responsibility for it even if the device has signs of wear. Can you imagine Ford or some other auto company that had a defect for their brakes or airbag, refusing to service that because there is a dent in a door?

Never LG again. Never. Their customer service doesn't give a crap, and I'll do everything I can to prevent others from buying LG as well. It seems whatever their manufacturing process is that causes this bootloop happens across the product line: G4, G5, V10 and now some reports of the V20.

Contrast them to LLBean, who I also dealt with the same week. I had a problem with some boots and they bend over backwards to send me a new pair, no questions asked. LG doesn't stand behind their products, so I'll never buy another LG product. Ever.

Going to talk 3rd person to avoid potential issues, so just follow along.

She purposely bought a bootlooping LG G4 on eBay to see if LG will fix it. She called LG at 800-243-0000, got through the phone menu system, and talked to a real person. LG explained that without a "proof of purchase" (receipt/invoice), they initially had the warranty at 15 months from manufacturing date, but they extended it to 18 months. With a proof-of-purchase, the warranty is 12 months from purchase and does not change. She told them her IMEI to check and it was 1 week past the 18-month mark, so they said she can send it in but they'll most likely tell her how much it costs to repair or they'll ship it back (free FedEx both ways). They refused to comment on the cost of repair. Compared with the data retrieved here, LG's manufacturing date was a 1 day earlier than the 'ESN Date(Prod. Date)'. LG explained that the device must not have physical damage, water damage, cracked screen. She made a RMA with an invoice from another eBay G4 purchase from under a year ago and sent it in. The invoice doesn't indicate new/used. She sent it to LG and LG is repaired it as though it was under warranty. She got the phone back a few days later and it is fixed. The phone was sold as SIM unlocked, but now, it is SIM locked.

TL;DR: If you bought the phone more than 12 months ago, call LG, tell them you can't find your proof of purchase, and maybe the manufacturing date is within 18 months. If you like to "work the system", just don't screw it up for everybody else.

Hey, just had the bootloop issue --serial #506xxx. Never even heard of this problem before. Sending it back so that they can swap out the main board. Any chance they'll be able to save my data when they return my phone? Thanks.

Don't count on it. They'll erase it as part of the repair.

AGAIN ...not EVERY G4 will have the boot loop problem.

True, but it's sound advice to make good backups of all your stuff in case it does fail. In my case I had no advance warning, no strange behavior, no error messages, it just died.

Same experience with it. It was sudden and unexpected.

It's true that not all G4 will suffer bootloop. I mean, a user may break it a different way before the life expectancy. =P Also, the ones that never get sold might as well never have bootloop either.

Just got the dreaded bootloop... but not on my G4 or V10, but on my MacBook Pro. Second time this has happened. I've got until 12/31/16 to get back to Apple to see if they will fix it. 😦

My G4 (506 SN) is on it's way back from repair. I bought it on ebay on November 19 and it went into bootloop last Monday. So basically three weeks of really digging the phone after a few years of iPhone use. I used the live chat feature on the LG site, entered all of my device info in the Repair Request (including a screen shot of the ebay "proof of sale") and sent it in using the provided shipping label. Shipped out, fixed up and shipped back, free of charge. Hope it lasts.
Sorry to hear others are having issues with the repair.

Just for the record since I saw someone talk about how unlikely of an event this boot screen brick mode is on an LG G4, I'm currently 2/2 for boot looped LG G4 phones.

Last winter took mine to sprint after this behavior, they confirmed there was an LG recall of sorts confirming the issue with phones in my S/N range and so they replaced it without charge.

Just now it has again happened to the replacement phone about a year later. EXACT same problem because they were apparently so kind as to replace my phone in the recall batch with another phone from the recall batch (S/N begins 505...).

Anyway, just sayin' from where I'm sitting there's about a 100% chance of your Sprint LG G4 becoming a recall batch brick after about a year.

My household was 3 for 3. Mine and my wife's original and replacement.

My household is 2 for 2 so far. One I got replaced, the other LG screwed me over. I'm waiting for the replacement to do the bootloop dance.

I have no idea what percentage of people in the real world have bootloops. If you didn't have a bootloop, you're probably not in this thread.

Regardless, LG has lost me forever as a customer because of their lousy customer service and terrible policies of requiring me to pay $170 to fix their problem.

It's amusing to read their twitter feed. Almost every question they respond to is about a bootloop on one of their phones.

I have my LG G4 from 10/15. Never ran into this problem. Are there any steps to see if my phone has boot loop issue. It might be easier to get it fixed from LG now rather than later.

Thanks

I let my kids play some games and pokeman go for some time. Phone got hot but it worked without any boot loop issue. I guess, it is fine.
