The kinda-official LG G4 bootloop thread

LG finally accepted my phone and did a warranty repair. They stated that they "changed the flash memory". I have to admit, I'm a little worried.

The same happened to me, and worry became worse once I realized I was almost out of the warranty period when I got it back. I finally bought another (non LG) phone, problem solved.

Yeah. I know everyone can't upgrade, but if you can, you should.

Well, I haven't posted in months.

So I thought I'd say this.

My S/N 512 G4 just died about 2 hours ago, 5 hours after my recalled Note7 killed itself.

Also, I don't recall if your G4 was a referb or an LG repaired device.

Actually, I'm getting another Note7. Hopefully, this one gives me a better experience, because I really like the Note7.

Luckily, it didn't. It got pretty warm, but it didn't burn.

Well good. Seems like we're seeing more headlines as the days go on. Happy there's no damage.

I've got a Samsung S5 which hasn't been too bad but on the other hand, I've only ever gone with Sony and Samsung as their easier for me to use. My 12 year old nephew has a LG G4 phone that died on him around midnight last night (From the UK). It did the boot loop but then the motherboard failed. His mother's going to try the freezer fix on it but he's rather unhappy as it's been working perfectly for the last 13 months.

My G4 bootlooped 2 days ago, out of the blue. It's a Verizon VS986, the box says it was built in May 2015, I believe the serial number starts with 505. It's hardware rev 1.0.

It rebooted and kept doing that continuously. Pulling the battery and trying again was no different. I then pulled the battery for about 5 minutes, and that time it ran successfully for maybe a minute, and was at the "Optimizing apps" screen, before it started rebooting again.

I did some reading, and put it in the freezer (with the battery removed) for a few hours. Put the battery back in, and put the phone in a ziplock bag. This was to avoid getting condensation on the phone itself with it being out of the freezer, and in a warm environment. I put it back in the freezer, and was able to get it to boot up fully. After that I was able to back up my data, fortunately. I put the phone between 2 ice packs while doing the lengthy backup process, to keep it cool. The phone was still in the bag, again to avoid condensation on the phone.

I took it to Verizon the next morning, they are having a replacement shipped to me overnight. I did not have to use my phone insurance to get the replacement, fortunately, since they inspected the phone and found no physical or water damage. I bought the phone 14 months ago.

I read here today that going through LG for the replacement may be better than going through the carrier, but hopefully this will work out OK for me. I hadn't read that yet, my assumption was starting with Verizon would be better, and then go to LG if Verizon wouldn't help me.

I'm very glad that I was able to get it running long enough to copy my data off it, at least. I hope the replacement is reliable. I hadn't upgraded to Marshmallow yet (I had kept mine on 611A, not rooted), so I guess the replacement will be a chance to try the new OS version.

Verizon wouldn't help me, and LG said they'd look at it. It's been "repair in progress" since last week, and I'm hoping it won't take too long.

Either fortunately or unfortunately, I craigslisted another phone after i read online about the problem, but not what to do about it. I bought a used S6, and had actually thrown the G4 away before finding that LG is starting to help people. I bought the G4 on craigslist, so I just figured I was SOL. I actually pulled it out of the trash and mailed it. I'll be happy if it works, especially since i had already written it off...

it took lg a month almost to replace my motherboard. lol the motherboards are on backorder , geez wonder why. I will never buy a LG again if this phone bricks on me again.

How long is the warranty? my Serial # starts with 505. my 2 years is over next week and my phone totally froze up last weekend-- stays at the LG screen-- will occasionally go to the Verizon screen for a moment, but then back to the LG screen. Tried a reboot-- (pressing power and volume down key) I get to the menu, choose total reboot, get to the yes/no screen, choose yes, but it wont go any further. Now I can no longer even get to that screen at all. As well, I have had the phone on a charger all night, in order to bring to Verizon, only to have it be dead when we got there. They said there is nothing they can do -- I will go back tonight with the information about LG covering the repairs for a new motherboard if phone is within warranty. I just want to know if anyone knows how long the warranty period is.

In USA I think it's one year only for all carriers. It is for T-Mobile at least.

The warranty is set by the manufacturer, which is one year in the U.S. Some people have been able to get it covered outside of the standard warranty or any extended warranty coverage, but not everyone.

Adding to the list of bootloopers. cross-posted on a few other threads including Sprint and reddit's megathread.

Sprint leased G4 Oct 2015 - S/N 509

Got hot while charging this summer but shut down/restart fine otherwise fine. Bootloop of death late August 2015, froze on home screen. Within 1 year warranty.

Sprint gave me a giant run-around but eventually told me to go to LG and wouldn't even look at phone because I didn't buy insurance. Because we apparently need to buy insurance now for a leased phone to cover a warranty defect? No loaner, nothing, the only Sprint phone I could find was a 3G phone. Sprint forced me to downgrade plans to make compatible, except then they started charging me double the price and told me I couldn't get my "old plan" back. Escalating the issue with Sprint.

LG waiting on motherboard for over 2 weeks. Crossing fingers they will actually repair and send back.

Apparently, the 509 (Sept 2015) are the ones immediately following a Sprint LG recall for the split screen issue. Production rushed perhaps?

Okay, I had started the ship-slowly-and-take-forever repair process for my G4 through LG, then after reading here I called T-Mobile at 1-800-937-8997. First the rep told me to restart my phone (Yawn) so I told her it was the bootloop problem. She immediately told me they'd send me a replacement phone-same model without the defect. It's on backorder, so I have to wait a week. I also have to send back the old phone with the shipping label they're sending me. If my phone is damaged otherwise, I'll be billed for the price of the new phone. I'm not concerned about that. I'm really happy they're taking care of this and I don't have to wait for LG to repair the POS. Please try calling your carrier, guys. She said LG is helping them take care of this.

It seems T-Mobile stepped up their game concerning the G4 issue. In my case, a few months ago, the TMO CSR told me the only option I had was either file an insurance claim (and pay the rather steep deductible), or go the LG warranty claim way. I did the warranty claim, and after a second attempt by LG the phone was fixed.

Sorry to hear that; you probably had to wait forever for the repair too :b I hope they get a class action lawsuit for this.
