The LG G3 vs HTC One M8 - Help me decide!

Re: Why the M8?

I'll definitely be posting an update once I do get the phone but it's still about a week or two away. I've been continuously playing with my friend's G3 and it does heat up rather faster than most other smartphones I used. Granted, none of the smartphones I used before had a QuadHD display. I would honestly go straight for the M8 if it only had a better camera, but like I said before I like to take pictures on the fly so I don't always have the time to set up a shot. I do have a GoPro handy but I use that primarily for video-shooting rather than photo taking.

Did you get the G3 yet. If so, how do you like it?

Battery life is a major concern, so from what I've read, the S5 beats the G3 with this, correct?

From what I've heard G3 has slightly better battery life than the S5 and the M8 has much better battery life than both. Depends how you use the phone though somewhat.

Interesting; I've read completely the opposite, lol.

Just got the G3 today, I will be updating my experience in a day or so and post another update a week from now. As for now, everything is working fine and nothing is catching me by surprise. The phone is already fairly warm but it's to be expected since its backing up every app, contact, update, etc. from my other phone.

By the way, I keep forgetting... Do I deplete the battery before the first charge? or do i charge it first, then deplete it?

The new batteries don't have a memory like the old one, so cycling it doesn't matter any more. I have read that there is no need to deplete the battery. Here's an article and a quote:

"Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life, other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery once in a while."

I can't say its the most accurate experience since I've only had the phone for a day now, but the battery life is pretty amazing. I charged it up to 100% last night before I slept (around 12AM) and woke up (around 8:30AM) with 98%. Been using it the entire day checking email, taking pictures, updating apps, surfing the web, making phone calls, constantly texting, etc. and I am at still at 38%. 24 hours on a single charge with moderate-heavy usage is a plus in my books.

Just a first day update: Overall, the phone is solid. Battery life is awesome and, though the UI isn't as snappy as Sense 6, it's manageable. No overheating, camera is good, form factor is awesome... I'll just say that everything is good except 2 things I've noticed: 1) My white balance seems to be off because there's a yellow tint on my screen when I compared it to my friend's G3. 2) I don't know if its my eyes or the display, but it looks like there's a lot of over-sharpening in certain areas of the phone (mainly text). Both of these issues have been experienced by other users so I might replace it if there is no solution to fixing them.

Been following this post: its very interesting. I own a G3 and considering trading for a HTC one m8 because of the many reasons mentioned by other users ( over heating after a bit of use, lag moving around the interface, auxiliary cable with in car stereo really buggy and doesn't work half the time)

What have you ended up doing with your g3? Have you kept with it?

Those are the biggest issues I've seen with the G3. Although lag is relative. But the issues with overheating and the aux cable bug seem to be bigger and more widespread. Have you looked into a replacement?

I haven't had any issues with over-heating. As a matter of fact, I haven't had issues with heating in general even when using big applications. It gets slightly warm but it only comes to mind when I actually think about it instead of focusing on what I'm doing at the moment. Like I said before, the lag on the interface isn't as snappy as Sense 6 or Stock Android, but it is manageable (I'm coming from an S3 so the lag on the G3 is pretty minuscule). As for the auxiliary cable, I haven't tried that yet and will try it out tomorrow. If it's bad then I'm definitely returning the phone for a replacement (I usually give a phone at least 2-3 tries before giving up, depending on how many return days I have left).

As for now, I have kept the G3. There's nothing on the phone I have experienced that has made me go, "I hate this, I need to return it". Camera is excellent, form factor is awesome, and overall experience (bit of lag aside) is great. The battery life is so good to the point I turned off the battery percentage number because I don't even need to worry about it anymore. The phone never dies no matter what I throw at it. I charge my phone to 100 before I sleep then unplug it, wake up with about 97-98%, use it the entire day (9am - 10:00pm) with heavy usage, come back with about 20 to 25%.

I have pretty much placed the M8 as a last resort in my book now, but that's just because the camera is that important to me. I don't have a separate camera I can use on-the-fly so having a good camera on my smartphone is one of the most important factors to me. I played with multiple M8s in stores and can't stand the lack of detail in pictures when zoomed in. It has the potential to take nice pictures but only if a shot is set up perfectly which I can't always control.

I bet HTC being metal is pretty slippery... and they added that huge bezel with the logo under the screen... I would not buy it. However, it seems that M8 is one of the best lag free phones available.

Subscribed myself to this thread as well!! I swear, this dilemma has been haunting me for weeks lol I'm also coming from a Nexus 5 and truth be told I really despise its camera. Idk if its cam is similar with the M8 though, but wow everything else on the M8 that's not the camera seems very promising. As for the G3, it's the opposite lol I honestly just really want it for the camera! Form factor doesn't really matter for me between the two because both look good anyway.

I'm in the same predicament as well. I'm leaning toward the M8 over the G3 for a few reasons.
1. I'm coming from an iPhone 5S, so the 5" sceen is plenty big. Plus the M8 is a tiny bit more narrow than the G3. I think it'll be easier for me to text one- handed (extremely important to me).
2. The sample pics in these forums show the types of photos I take most often (indoors in restaurants/bars and other lowlight situations the M8 pics actually look better than the G3's. I also like the idea of refocusing and the additional camera effects post pic available on the M8.
3. The M8 seems a lot snappier to me. Played with both briefly in store.
4. The display on the G3 looks really soft and washed out almost. I think it's just a more natural color than the slightly more saturated M8, but I like the slightly more punchy display.
Just hoping I enjoy the Androjd experience as much as iOS. Had every iPhone since the 3G. Before that I used Symbian and Windows a Mobile. It's about time to dip my feet into the Android water.

Sorry bout the drawn out post.

Serious question: Why is one-handed texting so important? Is it just habit or are there times when you can't use two hands? Not being judgmentat, I'm just curious because I text sometimes with one had but I could certainly live without it.

For me it's a combination of old habits/comfort, and useful when carrying other things or doing something else like working a key in a lock.

Sometimes because I'm doing other things with my left hand, but it's mostly out of habit. I'm just faster texting with using only my right hand. I tend to make less mistakes typing one-handed as well. The only phone I used both hands to type with was my Nokia e71, and only did that because it had a physical qwerty. Even typing longer replies or emails I prefer one-hand. A lot of it probably comes from using iPhones since 2008. Once I start using a wider phone I may prefer using both hands. Not sure yet.

I'm much faster texting with two hands so that might be why I wouldn't miss the single-handed texting. Who knows, though, it might be one of those things where if it were actually taken away I would miss it. I have big hands so I might still be able to text with one hand on a 5.5" device. Thanks for the answers.

When I was playing with the G3 in store I was able to type one-handed, especially after adjusting the keyboard size. That's a great option. It wasn't very comfortable or feel very sturdy though. I was constantly worried about dropping it.
