The Moto Droid 3 - what features do you want on it?

Sadly, it looks like the Droid 3 will lack LTE, at least the initial version. :(
I currently work at VZW, we just had a meeting and they stated for recent and upcoming smartphones, the 3G ones are the Droid 3, Droid X^2 and Casio Commando. For 4G, its the Charge for TBA, Revolution and Bionic for Q2.

I am disappointed that our only 4G LTE phones for the forseeable future are 4.3" devices. I was really hoping for a slider. I still hold out hope VZW will launch an LTE variant of the Droid 3, just like there was a global version of the Droid 2.

BMX has said there will not be an LTE device with a screen smaller than 4 inches any time in the near future. The radio tech right now is not mature enough to allow that. Verizon is apparently in the process of approving the next revision of hardware that will be smaller, and allow for more diversity. Those devices are far off though.

Pretty much exactly like that scenario. I thought at the time how sleazy that was.

Yes but you have to remember three things:

1. The original D2 was very buggy and slow and I had one VZW rep tell me it was one of the worst phones he had ever seen
2. The D2:G was a direct replacement for the D2 and thus (as I understand it at least) the ones who turned in defective ones after a certain point got the D2:G as a replacement just as BB Tour users got BB Bolds
3. If you paid any attention in the tech blogs at all we all knew that both the R2D2 Edition and the Global edition were coming. I knew even before the D2 was released and chose to wait for the the global.

But yes it was kinda cruddy. I always wondered if maybe they pushed it out earlier than originally planned because the first D2 ended up being a piece of crap...

I'm hoping that VZW would soon release an LTE version of the Droid 3 shortly after the 3G-only model comes out. I wonder if the Droid 3 will come out soon since Best Buy has leaked it? Am I the only one that wants an LTE slider phone? It feels like most people are happy with slates, and rather dislike sliders. :'(

The Droid 3 with its specs, (qHD screen, HDMI out, dual core, etc), a physical keyboard and with LTE is currently my dream phone and I hope it happens sooner rather than later! :p

It's not a matter of desire. Sometime go to a best buy mobile (or other cel shop that sells both VZW and att) and compare the Thunderbolt and HTC Inspire. The Thunderbolt is quite a bit thicker and that us because of the LTE radio because otherwise they are almost the same phone). Now imagine a phone as thick as the Thunderbolt with a front slider the thickness of the D2 added to it to make it even thicker. A few may like it but the vast majority would condemn it is being way too big.

I prefer the stock D2 over the D2G. My D2 wasn't terribly buggy to begin with but, the NinjaBlur homescreen was not to my liking so i just through another ROM on it and it is definitely the most solid device i have ever owned. Battery life is ridiculously good. The D2 and D2G have identical processors so the change in clockspeeds just results in more heat, slightly faster performance, and shorter device life. I also figured that the D2 would be more developer compatible as it will be a nearly identical ROM to the ever popular DX. Example: my D2 on v2.3.3 and the D2G on v2.2 is still waiting for a comparable leak. Hopefully that will come soon enough as they are very similar devices. But would not suggest the D2G as being a superior device unless you prefer global roaming capabilities.

in your signature you're interested in the Nexus S but samsung is dead to you?
they make the hardware, and if you're unhappy with the updates just root and do it yourself.

It's a 1.2ghz processor instead of a 1ghx but here is my experience with the D2. I took my original Droid (with Froyo of course) to the VZW store and went up to the display for the D2. I did a reboot of both phones and then experimented with both phones side by side. The D1 blew it away in overall responsiveness in everything I did. The D2 actually LAGGED big time. I was really disappointed.

Samsung is dead to me because of the Fascinate Froyo backless. Nexus S may be physically manufactured by Samsung but it gets updates directly from Google (as i am sure you know. Interested in simply means I am watching them and MIGHT buy one especially if I got a good deal. As it stands TMo data service sucks up here in Duluth and they don't even carry it in store so it is unlikely I would ever get one unless unless it somehow came out on Verizon. At this point I have pretty much discounted the possibility and will home we bet the Nexus 3 on VZW either by Motorola or LG.

I am sad to hear that its all but certain the Droid 3 will only be 3G, keeping it just away from being my perfect phone. :'(

I hope VZW would launch an LTE version of it shortly after the Droid 3 comes out. Or make it like their own Xoom, when ready, we can send in our Droid 3's for an LTE upgrade?

It's not that simple they would have to completely replace the phone since the LTE radios will not fit in the existing shell. The whole point of not having LTE int he D3 is to keep it from being significantly fatter than the first two Droids.

It's more of a wait and see from this point.
Regardless, I'm sure the D3 is still going to rock (even if it isn't sporting LTE).

Just curious, how is Motorola able to upgrade the Xoom to LTE sometime in the future? Is there already an empty space in the Xoom to place the radio, whereas all the space on the Droid 3 is filled up?

i'm willing to bet they planned it that way!

so i was researching release dates. the droid came out in october (10) of 09 the droid2 came out in august (8) of 10. will the droid 3 be released in june (6) of 11?

that would be awsome if i was right, but i just noticed the number sequence.

My assumption is "yes", there's a spot for it. And that's based on the fact that the XOOM, from the beginning, was always going to have LTE, and not just something that would be nice to add later. So, with the advanced planning, they could (and probably did) leave the space available for the LTE radio.

i think june/july! everything is starting to leak about it and ussally the release come pretty quick after that!

4,3" screen consequently a bigger keyboard
Gingerbread or even IceCreamSandwich
Dual-core or a 1,5 - 2,0 GHz single core
8MP up camera
As fast 4G as Samsung Infuse 4G (21MB/s i think)
qHD Screen (980x540)

I think that that's enough XD

4 inch qHD screen
1.2 GHz dual core processor
1GB of RAM
4G LTE certified
8MP rear facing camera
2MP FF camera
Fingerprint scanner (my brothers Atrix has it and I think its an awesome feature)
Running the latest version of Android
NO MOTOBLUR just stock vanilla :)

Ahhhhh, I need to quit day dreaming! LOL

LOL I think we would all love that. I would buy that phone outright with no contract if I had to. The biggest thing is stock Android. Motorola's hardware is usually very good, it's just hindered by their software.

What I would like to see is updated news about when its coming. Beyond that goliath602 hit the stuff I would want to see, but would be happy still without LTE (we can't fit that fat radio in with GSM/CDMA radios and the FPS would be nice although I think it was a novelty item that won't go anywhere.
