The Rooting Thread

When Froyo 2.2 comes out for the Galaxy S Epic 4G do you have to unroot the phone? or can you leave it the way it is?

depends. If we get something like unrevoked forever, we can install OTA updates since the bootloader gets unlocked (can flash anything) and the /system/ gains read/write access 100% of the time (basically, what root is). So even if sprint pushes out a patch that would block an exploit, the bootloader stays unlocked since its not something an OTA update could update.

Regular exploits usually get patched with OTA updates. Sprint has been known to patch them up, especially with change in OS. You will most likely need to reject the OTA update and wait for a ROM to be built on the new update. Typically, Froyo releases come out before an OTA update, and you won't be waiting to run it. If you want a ROM based on the official finalized version, you'll usually wait at most a couple of days, otherwise, there is a CyanogenMod team already working on a 2.2 ROM for Epic.

It seems pretty easy to root your phone. I'm just kind of scared to brick my phone in case something was to go really crazy or I forget to do something. Remember, I'm coming from the Palm Pre where they had the WebOs Doctor so encase you mess up you can revert your phone back to the original version of the OS. I'm glad that there is some tutorial for rooting your phone and their is starting to be easier stuff out their to do this for the people that are not so tech savvy. One more question: what does Rooting your phone do to it?

Gives you read/write access to the /system folder which is normally blocked by default. This may not sound important, but it is since you need access to /system to flash a recovery image, which makes it easy to switch between ROMs, backup your phone (like webOS doctor, but instead, a snapshot, and takes far less time to restore, only a couple of minutes max). Also, some apps in the market require read/write access to /system, like wifi-tether, cachemate (deletes cached items all at once, saving you internal space, and deleting somewhat useless files that take searching a lot longer, i.e. loading an app).

How much support do Samsung phones tend to get when it comes to rooting?
Currently fair support but no were near HTC but I think that will change.
Samsung hack support will get stronger due to Epic ,Great developers over at SDX appear to have Epic root just about nailed down :)

That's good. As long as there is some support, I'll be excited about rooting.
