The rumoured camera of the LG Nexus - how will it perform?

Okay, I didn't have the G2. But I had the Nexus 5. They both had the Snapdragon 800. Both had 2 gigs of ram. I fail to understand your point. The Nexus 5 was the best phone I've ever owned. Absolutely no problems with any aspect of the software at all. On Kit Kat or Lollipop.

Edit: Or I could keep reading and see that you guys are talking about the camera software. Disregard my statements. However, after the Lollipop update, the camera software worked considerably better than Kit Kat. For me at least.

Oh yes, it got better with the updates but just looking at comparisons to the G2 done by respectable sites like Anandtech it's clear that LG had the superior camera software processing.

Nothing beats stock Android though, you're right there!

Fair enough. You win there.

But the cameras for the G4 and Nexus 5 2015 are rumoured to be further apart than the G2 and Nexus 5 2013 were.

G4 -> Sony IMX234, 1/2.6", 16MP, RGB

N5 '15 -> Sony IMX278 1/3.06", 13MP, RGBW

The Huawei P8 has the Sony IMX278. Here's Anandtech's thoughts on how it fares:

"Overall the P8 impressed a lot in low-light photography. I think it's safe to say that it beats the Galaxy S6 in most scenarios. The RGBW sensor seems to have paid off in that respect as the results speak for themselves.*

However what makes a camera is more than just low-light photography, and while the P8 is able to hold its own among the best low-light shooters, it's the daylight scenes that are more concerning. Sony's RGBW IMX278 sensor just wasn't able to compete with a more traditional Bayer sensor when it comes to sheer detail in sufficiently lit conditions."

The S6 has a wider aperture, bigger cells units size and more MPx than the P8. So there was no hope for the P8 to resolve the same among of details than the S6 in daylight.

In good light conditions, the RGBW won't help and to compensate the loss in MPx, you will have to go for a wider aperture in hope to capture more light faster. Unfortunately, that's not the case of the P8 which is "only" f/2.0.
But even with a wider aperture, if your environment is very bright, you won't be able to catch up a sensor with more MPx in matter of details.

So the situation has nothing to do with the RGBW matrix here.

The camera performance will likely be the deciding factor in my Autumn purchase of a phone. I'm debating between a Nexus 5X, a Moto X Pure, and even considering the upcoming Lumia 950/XL. I'd love to pair a large screen and a great camera, but if the camera on the Nexus is markedly better that the Moto X Pure, I'd happily sacrifice the screen area. I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about the camera...particularly since the sensor is already in a couple of other handsets that are on the market.

Well, I don't know if Google will significantly improve the image processing, but we should see a neat new camera feature.
