The Stoopid Droid X Calendar Tricks Thread...

SouthernSaltine - I believe something like that would have to be done in your email program. I've suggested it to the dev of MailDroid, so perhaps he will incorporate it in a future release.

Everyone - Over the last couple days, I've put Jorte, Agenda Widgets, and (Simple) Calendar Widget (it is listed as Calendar Widget in the market, but shows up as the Simple Calendar Widget after installing) through their paces and, for me, the Simple Calendar Widget gets the nod for now.

The reason why is I need something that can show my upcoming events. Admittedly ALL of the above can do so.

However, Jorte's views of events, while diverse, either don't show all the events (week or month views) or only show a couple days with no way to "scroll" through them. Also, I still have trouble looking at the layout. Graphically, I think it is a disaster. It is a real shame to have such a nice phone with an app that looks like Excel for Windows 3.1. Also, relatively, it is a pretty big app (>2.5MB). Another problem is that it doesn't drop expired events from the widget view. However, I think I'll probably keep it on my phone to see if the app dev will fix some of my perceived shortcomings.

Agenda suffers from the same shortcomings. While it has many different views, the inability to scroll through them is a bit frustrating. Also, (and a problem shared with Jorte), I could not find a way to get the widget to update at a time of my choosing (in case an event was added NOT through Agenda). However, at least it looks like a native Android app. It is ~1MB.

Simple Calendar allows for refreshes. It allows me to scroll through upcoming events. Unfortunately, it only comes in one size. I wouldn't mind that if I could resize it like I can with, say, the Motorola Messages widget. However, that function isn't present (yet?). Fortunately, it is only 84K. It isn't the prettiest app, but I can forgive it that since it is SO small and has more functions that I like.

Oh, and keep in mind this is just MY view based on MY needs, so YMMV.

Anyone have any other cool calendar apps they can suggest? Especially free ones or those that are available as a trial?

Keep your eyes out for when WebIS issues Pocket Informant for Android. This is a great app for calendar/to do. I used it extensively in my WM days. It's in internal beta right now, with expectations of release by year end.

Ahem, one of the best calendar Android apps is Calendar Snooze. It is very useful if you use the calendar events feature a lot, like me.

Also, Launcher Pro Plus, the home replacement launcher, just released a great calendar widget that comes with the app.

Give them both a look :)

I use this setup after trying anything and everything I could find. My only issue is with Calendar Snooze. For me, it won't show the event. I have to hit edit to see what is listed in the event field. I'm not sure if the writing is in white so it blends in to the background or if it's a different issue. I emailed the developer and he said he heard of other dx's had this. Anybody else have this?

Go into your Google Calendar on a browser. On the left there's an item for Other Calendars. From there you should find settings to find a friend's calendar. It's nice in that it will pop up in a different color so you can both see each other's schedule but still keep things separate.

For some reason the new calendars are not showing up on my Phone, looked to go to menu and add calendars, still not there....

Does anyone know how to do the following? I occasionally have appointments that are occur the same time everyday for a couple days.

For example, I have a job that runs from noon to 3pm on tues, wed, & thurs. Right now I need to enter it as three different appointments. How can I enter it as one appointment that occur during certain times over three days?

Oh, I should point out that if I try to do it now, the best I can do is to have one appointment that is spread over three days. That doesn't work for me for a couple reasons. First, I only get a reminder on the first day rather than each day for each appointment. Second, the appointment is spread over three days rather than just the time needed each day. This messes things up when I add other appointments because it isn't clear what appointments are when. Especially if I were to have a bunch of appointments like that.

The alternative is to enter the appointments for each day. This gets old quickly! It's worse if the appointments are, say, on Mon, Wed, & Fri.

It was easy to enter these on my old Blackberry as you could indicate that the appointment was repetitive weekly and then highlight the appropriate days.

Oh. I've tried a number of market apps that might help like Jorte to see if they would do there job and I couldn't figure out how to make them do what I need either.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Anyone have the Froyo leak and can tell us if it supports every other week appointments?

Thanks!

this is good stuff! Please keep it up as the calendar is my only way of knowing what's going on in my life! I'm currently using jorte and find it to work pretty well for my needs although I would agree that it looks a little cheap. ..but...but so far it is the closest calendar to my gmail calendar that I've personally experienced in terms of syncing and viewing. I'm looking forward to trying out the other options stated here and seeing how they compare!

I just ran across another trick.

On my blackberry it had the ability to set an appointment a either busy or free.I wanted this feature on my DX.

I just found out that if you hold the menu key a menu will pop up that has "show extra options". Click that and you will be given the additional choices of:

1. Presence - busy or not busy
2. Privacy - default, private, or public

The privacy thing is, I assume, related to google calendar/calendar sharing.

I wish the calendar app would at least warn if there were conflicting and/or adjacent appointments. Then we could at least try to avoid situations where we are busy or cannot get from one appointment to another in time.

I just wish I could turn it on These options to show by default!

Help with Calendar

Something weird is happening to my calendar invites
My wife goes into her phone and adds an event and puts me as required. I get the e-mail as normal. When I click on YES in the message it used to prompt me to use either the browser or the calendar app to accept. I would click on calendar and it would open up my calendar. Now the pop-up is not coming up anymore and it takes me to my browser and its not syncing the calendars right. I saw this thread and thought this would be a good place to ask. Any ideas?

Here's the problem I'm having. I upgraded from a BB Storm 1 (hasn't everybody that had one?) and was able to sync my office's group calendar, hosted on our Exchange server under Public Folders\Group Calendar. I could sync my desktop calendar (with personal and family appointments and events) as well as the group calendar to my BB with no trouble. Now my desktop Outlook emails and calendar synced up fine with the native app on my X but I can't find a way to get the public group calendar to sync. I have searched the forums and web but haven't found a solution. I could even get by if I could sync the public group calendar with my desktop calendar which would then sync with my X. I also looked at syncing them with a Google calendar but that doesn't seem to give me a way to access the public folders either. Everything about this phone and OS has been great and I don

Any help with the calendar sync issue in my previous post would be greatly appreciated. My boss's Droid X came in yesterday and he gets whatever phone I get so that I can figure things out and keep his phone operating like he wants. Therefore this issue will be even more pressing for me by the end of the week. Thanks.

So i am new to droid and have a question about the stock calender for the X, can you create reminders for ALL synced events on the handset at one time, or do you have to create them seperately one at a time?

When I first got my X, I used Outlook calendar synced to Google's calendar and, thus, to my DX. Eventually, I deleted the Outlook step and now deal only with Gmail/calendar/contacts via my desktop's web browser. I have Gmail as my home page on my computer browser and make most changes there. Sync is instantaneous! Terribly impressive!

My only gripe is not having the ability to color code events. Also, having an option to change overall color themes for the calendar would be nice, but not vital.

I've had no problems with the native calendar working with Google calendar. On the contrary, I'm very impressed with its overall performance. Certainly light-years better than any native BlackBerry calendar app.

Hmmm...one of the MAIN reasons I dumped my Bold 9700 was FOR the Droid calendar. I had been using Google Calendars for a while with my BB, but was tired of a piecemeal solution to calendar sharing with my wife (we're both BIS, not BES). I'm totally happy with the default calendar. I use CalWidget for my homescreen. I feel the default Droid X calendar is far superior to the default BB calendar. What better experience are you specifically looking for?

The stock calendar application for the Android devices doesn't allow you to download a calendar item that is sent to you from someone else. It doesn't download Facebook calendar items either. This is where the Gmail application is lacking.

You're right that it's not stock, but I think there's an app for that. Don't recall the name right off the top of my head.

Can't speak for Facebook as I don't use it.

Since I use Google Apps and not Exchange, I still say I prefer Android's stock cal over Blackberry. When I get a calendar invite, I just take care of it on my PC instead of my DX. Since I use multiple calendars (10 at current count) I have found that android handles it best allowing me to color code them. Exchange only sync'd one calendar. I could use GoogleSync to sync multiple calendars, but I would lose the color coding.

The stock android calendar isn't perfect, but it's the best option for me and my needs.

Timezone control on the calendar app.

The biggest issue I'm having with calender is moving across time zones. The program time-shifts the events to accommodate the new time zone. Stunningly stupid. Try entering a multiple time zone, multiple leg flight itinerary and then watch how the calender moves all the event times as you land and the phone syncs to the local time zone. What a mess! Nearly missed a flight!
Garbage.

Agree! This needs to be fixed. I need to set the timezone information for each end of an appointment. When I travel the entire week moves. The beginning and end of a flight are in different timezones, but they should stay as I enter them.

Do any of the other calendar apps handle this?

Anyone have a fix for this horrid date range limitation that has apparently been around forever? I have 980 Google calendar entries that I've accumulated over the years, and having only a relatively few available in the native calendar app is totally unacceptable.

I've migrated from Palm and its very nice webOS because of a dearth of available apps. At least the calendar sync worked -- if a user takes the time to make an entry on my phone or on the web, presumably he or she woulod like to keep it and view it at some point in the future.

Don't even get me started on the lack of a calendar search feature.

Thanks.

The Gmail calendar app is the best I've encountered. It syncs instantly between the X and your computer, no matter where changes are made. I also have Launcher Pro Plus that has a great calendar widget for my home screen. I especially like the "agenda" view in the widget.

When I first got my X last July, I was using Outlook for calendar, contacts, and email. Now, I eliminated the middle man (Outlook) and use solely Gmail, which also fetches my pop 3 email accounts. It's great!

how do i get the stock calendar to notify me at the right time. my blackberries would notify me of an event that was all day at midnight of that days event. now i get notified a day before.. what the hell !?
