I keep hearing words like "fake" and "plastic" associated with the black leather backs. And then I saw the you tube video "review" below and thought I needed to vent my 2 cents.
I think some people were expecting a thick, padded leather covering. This is real leather and real leather only fused to hard plastic. And apparently the carrier branded versions (especially verizon) are coming coated with some clear crap, probably urethane, which some car manufacturers use, which gives it a shiny, plastic appearance. After normal usage this coating will wear off and the softness of the real leather will come through. Some leather experts recommend using lemon juice to speed this up. I haven't tried this but instead I have been massaging the leather with my fingers every day until the gloss goes away. Then once the gloss is gone you can use some leather conditioner like Lexol and rub it into the pores of the leather. Then buff it with a clean, dry cloth.
Hope this changes some of the negative hype about the black leather backs because I love mine!
