The (un)official #tm13 anticipation/speculation post

Phil's pic of a Tyrannosaurus Veal steak almost gave me food poisoning.

Hrm. Smartphone round robin gives me a wicked idea. You get 6 or more smart mobile/tech journos at a table, crank the camera, and then ask them all to do a task with a stock phone of some make, model, OS. Then everybody hands their phone down to their right, and do another task. Like "musical chairs" and usability testing, all in one. The glee and frustration of each performing the task would tell viewers a lot about which device is truly effective and usable.

I liked the Central Park participant in the "SGS4 vs. HTC One" video, "They say the iPhone is for housewives.... I don't care." LOL

Whatever #tm13 is/was, it was expensive and clearly a lot of work (and goofing) for five days. I do look forward to it, if it's more than the usual "this product vs. this product" and "here's the new shiny-shiny we're all expected to crave."

CONSPIRACY!
(first 5 days is non stop drinking competitions, last 2 is covering up with bulk work with a hangover - trying to make the week look productive)

Hey guys, sorry I've been unavailable for a few days, but I've been following #tm13 news as best as I could ... mostly from the bathroom (tmi, sorry).

There hasn't been a lot of new info to glean (unless I've been missing stuff, which is possible). I wonder if that was by design ... or maybe we're getting to close! :)

You know, Mobile Nations might have poisoned my food!!!!!!!?!??!!?!?@#$@!#%^&#%^@!~~!!%4qERGjljlk

Ok, seriously...
More people were there including Georgia, Ashley Esqueda, Derek Kesler, and Anndrew Vacca.

There were more pics of high production value video shoots on the set in the hotel, including some shooting in 4k! And some pics of outdoor video shoots. Kevin has a shoot in a car. Alex Dobie posted a Zoe called "#tm13 Breakouts in NYC" with pics of outdoor shoots featuring Georgia. #tm13 breakouts in NYC - YouTube

Most interestingly, in Kevin recent post on Crackberry, he said, "We had a crazy week at our temporary NYC HQ office doing a bunch of prep work for #TM13 (more on that in my next From the Editor's Desk post)."
Prep work? Really? I wonder what that means. Was this whole week just prep work and they are producing the main #tm13 content later? Or does he just mean that producing the (main) content is prep work and the #tm13 event is when the content is posted/revealed. Interesting. What BlackBerry 10 videos do you want me to do / redo this week? | CrackBerry.com

But of course the highlight of the week was the pick of Ashley and Georgia making out on the streets of NYC. Well, maybe they weren't making out, but we can dream. ;) https://plus.google.com/112241639219303464110/posts/HSc9uPqRjxr

I'm going to take a guess and say TM13 is all about filming stock footage with Geek Beat TV/Livid Lobster studio.

On the most recent AC podcast (episode 133) Phil said this while talking about the possibility of a Google Play Game Center. Jump to approximately 20:50 mark in the podcast to listen for yourself.

Phil Nickinson said:
In fact I think I can give a little bit of a spoiler and nobody will shoot me. Um, as part of all this #tm13 stuff we've been talking a lot, recently, in our lead up to it about gaming; we've been talking internally. And so I've been thinking about cross platform gaming and gaming services. It's all kind of a mess. You have, I think Microsoft again might be best positioned to do it, but why would, when you have individual apps and individual developers, and. I'm trying to think of where I'm going with this. But what's Google going to do that makes it better than anything else that's failed or just hasn't taken off?

Hmm, what does that mean? "Talking about it internally" seems like an unnecessary statement since all of #tm13 has been internal up to this point. Or did he mean something besides the NYC video shoots. Internal with who? the Mobile Nations staff? Talking about social gaming services; does that mean #tm13 will be some kind of a social gaming service. Or maybe a social network?

Also this week we got a #tm13 signup page. Phil says in his "Ask the Editor" post,
Phil Nickinson said:
Speaking of #TM13, we've got a signup page for those of you who want to be alerted the moment we actually do something with it. Which should be any week now. I'm usually not one for e-mail sign-ups like this, but, damn, it's purty.

It is pretty. It has a full screen slideshow of some of the pics from NYC and says "
TM13 is coming - sign up to find out what it's all about", with a email signup box. After you signup the text changes to "GOT IT! WE'LL ANNOUNCE TM13 SHORTLY".

Apparently Guy English of kickingbear is being filmed for #tm13 also. Was this in New York or is this something more recent? https://twitter.com/reneritchie/status/332200050623139840/photo/1

The plot continues to thicken!

Talk Mobile 2013 Revealed!!!!

Today Mobile Nation let the #tm13 cat out of the bag, and presented Talk Mobile 2013, "An industry-first online event that brings together the top smartphone experts and fans in meaningful conversations about mobile technology and how it affects our lives."

The promo video is well produced, and I assume (hope?) it's indicative of the quality (not just production quality) of the content they'll be presenting.

Post, promo, and press release here: Presenting Talk Mobile 2013! | Android Central

Some things that I thought were highlights from the reveal...

Come next week -- June 3, actually -- when we roll out the first of the weekly discussions, you'll be as much a part of the conversation as we are. We've built a new commenting system for Talk Mobile that will span all of our sites and promote and recognize the best comments, so your voice will be heard not just on Android Central, but across the network.

VERY COOL! I really like this aspect. I'll definitely be participating.

And we're kicking things off with a launch party in New York City, open to the public, on June 6. Be sure to swing by TalkMobile2013.com to sign up, as we're giving away one trip to the Big Apple to hang with us for the night.
Also very cool! I'd love to go.

Mobile Nations, the leading online mobile news and community network -- Android Central, CrackBerry, iMore, and Windows Phone Central -- announced today that Talk Mobile, an online event spanning all of the Mobile Nations sites and presented by BlackBerry?, will launch on June 3, 2013.
No webOS Nation. :( I understand why; it's a dead OS, but still :( (Apparently, webOS Nation is no longer listed on the recently updated mobilenations.com . Does this mean it's gone?)

Talk Mobile 2013 press release said:
A total of 50 Talk Mobile features will be published over the next several months.
That's a lot of content. Nice!

Talk Mobile 2013 press release said:
Covering ten highly relevant topics, Talk Mobile will address the issues facing modern platform makers and manufacturers, carriers and service providers, developers and designers, and power users and casual users alike. Topics range from mobile gaming to photography to social to security.
10 topics. 50 "features". 5 features per topic? Monday thru Friday? So 10 weeks of content? Does 2.5 months translate to "several months"? Maybe ... maybe not?

Talk Mobile 2013 press release said:
Each Talk Mobile feature will start with a roundtable discussion moderated by Cali Lewis and John Pozadzides of GeekBeat.TV, with Mobile Nations? site editors Phil Nickinson, Kevin Michaluk, Rene Ritchie, and Daniel Rubino as panelists. The conversation will then be turned over to the community, where anyone and everyone can have their say, and the very best contributions will be featured.
I like the format.

Press Contact:
Derek Kessler, Managing Editor, Talk Mobile
I hate to say this because I think it might sound mean (I don't mean it like that at all.) But I'm glad Derek is involved, and I'm glad he still has a job.

That's all I got. So they give us 4 of the 10 topics ("Topics range from mobile gaming to photography to social to security.") Anybody want to speculate on the rest?

Nope, the site's still there, and we're still running it. But as you note, there's not a lot to run these days. RIP webOS.

Won't run every week. Want to give some breathing room. :)

Any events expected to be held out here in the Bay Area? I would definitely show up to attend.

You are quite the sleuth jean15paul... stay tuned for lots of good stuff this week. Hope you like it!

So the week that Talk Mobile finally launches, both my computer and my phone die. :( (The network adapter on my computer breaks, and my phone gets water damage and reboots randomly.)

I'll be back (eventually), I promise.

I think my secret Mobile Nation drinking Festival and then covering up with an event wasn't far off the mark.

I think my secret Mobile Nation drinking Festival and then covering up with an event wasn't far off the mark.

Talk Mobile week 1 has wrapped up, and I think week 2 will be starting on Monday. I've definitely been enjoying it so far... even though problems with my tech and work obligations prevented me from participating like I wanted to. (I actually just finished consuming all the week 1 content today.)

Does anybody still read this speculation post? I hope so... Anyway, I've been want to do this post for almost 2 weeks...

There are 10 TM topics. Obviously gaming was week 1. The press release said, "Topics range from mobile gaming to photography to social to security". So it's pretty safe bet that those are 4 of the 10 topics (gaming, photography, social, and security). I don't know if everyone else noticed this, but at the beginning and end of each TM video there's a graphic with different symbols moving through the letter 'o' / talk bubble. I'm pretty sure each one of those represents a topic. I've been watching them to see if I can figure out additional topics. Anybody want to jump in a speculate?

(I'm going to see if I can get a screen capture of each one and post it here. Stay tuned!)
