There IS a wi-fi only version! YA

I think they mean "just incase" as in they want to activate the 3G. Buying it unsubsidized and not turning on 3G is what I plan to do if the WiFi version isn't announced soon after. If I ever go on a trip and I know I won't have Wifi, call up VZW, activate my 3G for the month and be happy. Just because you buy a 3G version doesn't mean you have to also get a 3G subscription (as long as it's not subsidized).
I understand that perfectly. I know you don't have to activate it. I got the impression he was saying that he would be out and about, and for some reason couldn't tether his phone, and just says "hey, no problem, I'll just use wireless data" Who would just "spontaneously" add data onto their account on the fly. Seems more feasible to just buy it subsidized and have it always be active.

Anyway, from your perspective, I guess it would be nice to have a wireless 3G/4G radio to fall back on. Although I have trouble coming up with scenarios that provoke such a thing.

That's a good plan jg, I think we will be seeing a lot of people doing that as well, myself included. I don't need the 3G for 75% of the time, but I won't mind paying for it when I'm out and will be bringing it with me.

Supposedly the Verizon edition with 3G at launch will also have WiFi built in. Also, Verizon is moving away from tablets with contracts, so it should be readily available with 3G, WiFi, and no contract.

Now, this is what the local Verizon idiot told me, so take it what it's worth, but hopefully this will be true! And if so, I'll be in line at launch day to get mine just as I was with my DX.

I don't have a hard time believing that -- that's been the trend with Tablets so far. And yes, all version of the Xoom have WiFi.

Wifi only is the only version I will buy. They better not delay it. Apple had the wifi and 3G launch at the same time...

No they didn't. Apple released the WiFi only version first and follwed it with the 3G release a month or 2 later. That way they got all of their koolaid drinking followers to buy the wifi only first, then a month later, put them on the shelf next to their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation ipods, as well as their iphone, iphone 2, iphone 3, iphone 3gs, so they can buy the ipad 3g.

Plus, does anyone really care what Apple does or doesn't do? I for one am not heading down that crap iTunes iPhone road with Verizon. It's going to be an Android Tegra2 phone and Xoom tablet for me!

The real question for me is does the WiFi only version have a GPS chip in it so I can connect to my Nexus One via it's WiFi hotspot and use the Xoom with Google navigation...

No. I will just tether with my phone and if I, for some reason, need Verizon 3G/4G I will call them and activate my Xoom for the month. I don't want to have a extra bill for $30 every month. It is that easy really. You call Verizon give them all the information, pay them and there you have 3G on your Xoom. That is how I did it with T-Mobile.

I think im just going to wait for the wifi only version. Then tether it to my DX when needed then down the road whenever I upgrade to a 4g phone hopefully tether the xoom to that and have 4g data. I wonder if the wifi only versions will be available at other retailers beside Verizon like best buy for instance.

Anyone know how the contact for a tablet works? Is it just like a smart phone?

If I have a family share plan with the data share from the promotion that Verizion was running a while back. If I add a tablet could it just use the "unlimited" shared data I have for my family share?

Unfortunately, no. It looks like the policy going forward with Tablets (at least on Verizon and AT&T) is going to be a month-to-month data plan that you will have to pay for separately than your current plan with your phones. I think it's stupid you can't share your data pool, but then where's the money to be made in that, I suppose.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they wouldn't allow the data share.

Release date???? Price???? Come on Motorola! I'm going into convulsions here!

Hello, I'm new here. This past year I've gone gadget crazy. I started with a Nexus one, then a Ipad, a Iphone 4 and, now back to Android with the Mytouch 4G. I still have the Ipad.

It seems like something new is coming out all the time. I would really like to have this tablet but, like many of you; I don't want another data plan. I'll probably just tether it if I need to.

I hope the wi-fi only version comes soon after the 3G version.

My first question is will it have a GPS chip built in or will they remove it in the wifi only version like the iPad does?
