There's a unknown status icon in my notification bar I need to get rid of.

Hi!

Six days ago, I was in a Albany (NY) shopping center and I was looking for some WIFI. I'm from Canada and my phone was on "airplane mode" (I did not want to pay for roaming fee). I finally found some good WIFI in a Apple store (oh the irony...). As soon as I connected to this WIFI, a strange status icon appeared on my phone. At first, I thought that icon would go away when I close the WIFI link. I was wrong. Since that moment, that icon is always there. Restarting my phone a few times have done nothing. And at first glance, there is no apparent new apps install on my phone either.

My phone is a unrooted Samsung Galaxy S4 running on Lollipop 5.0.1 (I know its not up to date, I'm a bit resistant to change... : P).

Can someone help me with that?

Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forums, and Albany (I know that mall fairly well, I don't live too far away).

That icon looks like a combination of NFC and WiFi. If you pull down your notification shade and look at the quick settings panel, do you see an icon that looks like that? You could also check in your location settings to see if the phone is trying to use those connectivity options to get a more accurate location.

You were right on target hallux! I've looked at my quick setting panel and the NFC and S Beam buttons were checked on. I've turned off the NFC button (which also turned off the S Beam) and the "unknown" status icon has disapeared! And now, I feel relieved and dumb... o_O ; )

Thanks a lot hallux!
