Things people miss from WebOS

@Ahchoo I completely agree with you. The double tap to zoom is terrible i was trying to figure out if there was something in the settings that could be changed to make it better but no luck. I'm glad that i'm not the only one that found that ridiculously bad

I think the multi-touch on the EVO is so much better. To each their own, I guess.

Wait for a release or two the webOS UI is coming to android. Google has snatched the webOS UI brain of palm from them :)

I like the usability of Pre, switching between apps and better multitasking. Easier access to Linux as well. Android feels thrown together, not as well designed interface, but can do so so much more. Not missing the Pre in the end. But it is a great OS with a very solid, well though out architecture.

Android is more open in terms of licensing but webOS really is more open in terms of access to the device. It's frustrating that Android phones have to be rooted via hacks. It should be open access like webOS. webOS is "more Linux" than Android methinks.

Android will be adding a search feature for the app store as they said in Google IO.

I got my EVO last friday and I just want to say that I love it, but getting used to Android is taking me awhile to master but its all good. I had used the Palm Pre for the past year and fell in love with WebOS, but with the crappy hardware and small app count i felt it was time to switch phones. There are a couple of things that i do miss though and i just wanted to know what other people who switched to the Evo from WebOS missed.

1. Touchstone

2. Homebrew (I haven't yet learned about rooting or rom's so this might change)

3. How easy it was to search the app catalog. There might have only been 2700 apps but finding the one you were looking for was pretty easy.

4. With that small app count that palm had there were some gems in there. Some of the apps I miss are: Fall-E, whats for dinner, paratroopers etc. (there might be good replacements for these in the android market but see # 3)

Thats about it.

Actually I don't miss as much as I thought I would. The cards would be number two.
The main thing I "miss" is the launcher button on the left of the bar.

The PowerMat is $39.99. I'm sure that's only for the may(?). You can't buy an OEM battery for that much.

- Gestures
- Cards
- The phone was small, which allowed for more usage in crunch time. Taking the Evo out during class = nono, lol.
- Sometimes things just worked. Pandora wasn't opening really well for me (Evo), hopefully the new update fixed it.... with the Pre, not as many crashes on an app...

Infact, I never had an app crash on me. Also, the multitasking was so esay and efficient on the Pre ... I sometimes want to go back to WebOS. Widgets don't give me as much love, lol.

And LASTLY, the biggest thing:
PDK

Give us games! I want to finally play Sims 3/Nova on my BIG SCREEN.

Things I miss in order:
Cards (best multitasking mgmnt seen to date)
Being able to tap the top bar to turn things on/off
Notifications management: especially on the lock screen
Being able to re-arrange icon in the app list
Gestures - swipe to delete, cut/paste etc
Browser zoom and rendering

I believe WebOS is the best phone OS out there, but the apps and hardware available for Android were just too much to bear. If HP doesn't screw Palm up then I would never hesitate to go back when the platform and hardware are more mature.

Agreed. Certain things about my Pre I want to go back to.
Apps opened just as quickly with 800mhz.
Switching between apps was crazy easy.

And things were smoother in SOME sense. Browser was SUPERB.
I also wish Android had an easier way to kill apps that I am not using.

1) Touchstone
2) Guestures
3) SMS and IM clients in the same window
4) Better multitasking with cards
5) The biggest issue and I mean huge issue for me is the Android Web Browser. I miss double tapping and getting column formatting. The "double to tap and zoom in on the text which changes the layout of the page" in Android is absolute trash. I've stopped browsing the web on my Evo. I'm embarrassed to show anyone what "smartphone web viewing" is like... How could such an easy feature be left out... Its kind of pathetic honestly. Am I the only Android user in the world bothered by this??? Have you tried using the column formatting on the iPhone or the Pre??? Its makes viewing and fast navigation of a page so easy.

Sorry I kind of went on a rant there... If you couldn't tell I absolutely loathe the Android Browser... It honestly ruins even having a 4.3 inch screen for web browsing.

Other than that I enjoy Android. I really like the customization. I could use some advise on a good IM client...

Really? I've never used that feature on my Pre. I LOVE DolphinHD. Have you tried that? Even with the stock one browsing on the Evo is 5x better. I dont even have to zoom in on most pages due to the size and resolution. With my Pre on that tiny screen was worse.

My 800mhz Pre didn't respond nearly as fast as the Evo.
I miss the random 15 second pauses I used to get.

Also you don't need to kill apps with Android.
It just needs a way to get back to open apps better.

I like the Android browser a lot better. The column reformatting works really well for me - it's focusing the page on what I've indicated I'm interested in. If what I want is the original page blown up (as opposed to the reformatted view) I can just pinch-zoom.

My pet peeve on the WebOS browser was that many websites came up with long lines in tiny, unreadable type. If you zoomed in, you could read the text, but had to finger-scroll back and forth to see all the text. For example, the Precentral forum (standard version, not the mobile site) did this.

This was clearly a bug in the WebOS browser that survived multiple webOS updates. There's a weird workaround where if you prepare the browser by visiting certain other sites (for example NYTimes.com works), rotate to landscape, rotate back to portrait, THEN visit Precentral forum or other problem site, you'd get a better formatted page. Not having to do this makes the Android browser render a lot faster. :D

X2 I love the column formatting. It makes the web easier to read. This is one of the advantages android has.

I miss my touchstone and swipe to delete. I still have my Pre on my desk on the touchstone and every once in awhile I check for updates and new apps. I also miss easily notification access.

N.O.V.A is on the gameloft website. I bought it for 5 dollars it is awesome on the 4.3 in screen. If you find a gameloft game in the market scroll down and hit the developer's website and you can get it from there.
