Things people miss from WebOS

messaging is the only thing i'm missing. i still haven't found a decent IM program and every time i open handcent SMS i think of how nice it'd be for everything to be integrated into that

1. Touchstone

2. WebOS email with near-perfectly integrated IMAP. I'm using K9 on the EVO, which is better, but not near as good as the Pre's email.

Current Pre user here. I am certain that the Evo supports multiple gmail accounts for email, but can you access contacts and calendar for each of those accounts?

With the Pre I have 5 gmail accounts. I have simultanious access to the contacts and calendar of each of these accounts. In other words, my contact list includes every contact in all five of these accounts.

Does the Evo support gmail accounts in this way?

I had this exact same problem with the EVO. You can sync email and contacts with multiple Gmail accounts but NOT calendars. Calendars can only come from one account and it is the master account you use when you initially activate the phone.

The way to mitigate this is to share your calendars from all accounts with your primary account on-line and then you will be able to see them on the EVO. I don't however know if you will be able to create appointments in all the shared accounts.

Another drawback but livable for me. I'm taking the EVO back for usability reasons. The Pre was much better as far as day to day use and navigation. Just the hardware made it too slow and it would pause for 10 seconds way too often.

I use Meebo, it does AIM, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, ICQ, and Myspace.

I think everything on my list has already been mentioned here, but I'll still type 'em myself :)

1. The messaging app - I really came to like that I was talking to a person over a service rather than using a service to talk to a person. I could easily switch in mid conversation from SMS to gmail chat. Most of the time when I got a message, I didn't even know (nor care) which service it came from, I just replied to it.

2. The touchstone - I still have it setting on my desk even though it's not doing me any good. Fantastic piece of hardware. Both charges the phone and keeps it at a readable angle.

3. Notifications - I dislike Android's notifications. The email notification tells me I have a new message and what mailbox it's in, but not who it's from or what it's about. And I can't individually dismiss the notification (in webOS, you just swipe it away and that notification is gone while the rest remain). Android's not as bad as iPhone, but still not as good as webOS.

4. Gestures - I can't tell you how many times I've swiped up from the bottom to get into card view or done a back gesture since I've got this thing :).

5. Quick access to WiFi and Bluetooth - Swiping down from the top right corner brought up the menu to control and configure the radios... no matter what application was running.

6. A physical keyboard - Autocorrect makes typing bearable, but I'd still rather use a physical keyboard.

7. Universal search - Start typing anywhere (even in a lot of the apps) and the thing started searching. If you were in cardview (or had no cards open), it'd start searching the whole phone (apps, contacts, etc). Really surprises me that Palm has better searching than Google :).

8. Easy control over what's running - webOS had the best multitasking around. Android does it, but it controls what's running in the background. On webOS, I have control... fling the app off the screen and it's gone. Not running anymore.

9. Homebrew - Don't like the way something works? There's probably a patch for it. Rooting doesn't exist in webOS. While Android isn't as bad as the iPhone from a control standpoint, they're also not as open as Palm.

Palm is linux on a phone done right. Android is a bunch of crap thrown together and called a phone OS. Android has more momentum behind it, but I really think Palm has the better product. The only reason Android is doing as well as it is is because Google is backing it. Anybody else, and it would be an also-ran.

That said, the hardware on this thing is outstanding. The OS if functional enough. It's a great phone to get me by until Palm releases something on better hardware. Of course, who knows... with Google grabbing Palm's UI guy, maybe Android will start to look better instead of cobbled together.

Thx for the feedback...I didn't see a button. Probably not enough posts.

That's strange that multiple email and contact is supported but not calendars. I do create events in multiple calendars, so this would be something I would want to no.

Yeah, I'm overclocking my pre by screenstate. Drops to 125 with screen off and up to 800 when on. This has been great for the Pre. I can't wait for a bigger processor off the shelf. I'm glad that the pre is open enough to overclock if you want to, but sadly they should have released the device with a bigger processor to begin with.

I wish that MessagEase had a keyboard for Android devices. This is the only virtual keyboard that comes close to better than physical kb's for me, but I would still be sad to lose screen real state with a virtual kb.

I need to just give it a test run and see if I like it.

Easy, safe homebrew. Nothing easier (or safer) than Preware. I've never heard of anyone bricking a Pre from hacking.

1. The touchstone - I will not buy the powermat, as I don't want to add bulk to the phone.

2. The cards - love swiping them up when done with them (though I couldn't stand the "no more cards" message")

5. Quick access to WiFi and Bluetooth - Swiping down from the top right corner brought up the menu to control and configure the radios... no matter what application was running.

7. Universal search - Start typing anywhere (even in a lot of the apps) and the thing started searching. If you were in cardview (or had no cards open), it'd start searching the whole phone (apps, contacts, etc). Really surprises me that Palm has better searching than Google :).

Not trying to argue, but things I've found that may be of use:

5. If you like, you can always put the widgets for those items on your home screen. Tap home once, you can adjust your settings...not as elegant as WebOS, but not much more difficult.

7. Universal search on Android really isn't that much different, and is, in some ways, better than the WebOS version. Rather than having to open the keyboard, you tap the hard search button and type in what you're looking for. If you're in a program, like e-mail, the search button will search that program specifically. I say universal search is better in some ways because it also searches emails and calendar.

8. I use Task OS to close open programs that I don't want open. About WebOS: you may have control over which programs are running in a more elegant manner....but there are some pretty huge memory leaks that no amount of app swiping away can get rid of. One of my frustrations with the Pre was swiping away all of my cards, and still being unable to open any new cards because of the too many cards error. Now, if everything was really closed, why couldn't I open another card? On Android, I can pretty easily find what services are running...on the Pre, not so much.

9. I LOVE Preware and it's developers (as well as the other homebrew guys), but homebrew was really necessary on the Pre because it doesn't have many options out of the box. With Android, you can customize very easily without needing to homebrew. For example, initially, you had to homebrew to get flashing notifications, timestamps on messages, a decent call log, an avatar in messaging, etc. etc. Those things are already built in to Android. There's not too much that I was able to do with Preware and Homebrew that isn't available either out of the box or with an App in Android.

2. Homebrew (I haven't yet learned about rooting or rom's so this might change) -THe evo doesn't need homebrew it comes built with everything needed. You dont have to root the phone to have the things that it should have like the pre

One thing that was holding me back was the tethering issue which I use at work because I sure as hell won't be paying an extra $30 per month for something that's included with my bill. Low and behold theres already a method to root the phone called unrevoked. A little poking around and I now have tethering in less than 10 minutes which was a lot faster than installing homebrew on the pre.

I'm a new Android user and I'm absolutely loving it!

Touchstone

Card View (better multitasking)

Wifi that works efficiently (battery life)

Gestures

Touchstone, gestures, cards, and the ability to just open the phone and start typing for universal search. However I love the EVO and not looking back.

1) Touchstone

2) email: pre is like iphone, this feels like windows mobile.

3) Broswer (i like the iphone/pre approach)

1) Touchstone
2) Guestures
3) SMS and IM clients in the same window
4) Better multitasking with cards
5) The biggest issue and I mean huge issue for me is the Android Web Browser. I miss double tapping and getting column formatting. The "double to tap and zoom in on the text which changes the layout of the page" in Android is absolute trash. I've stopped browsing the web on my Evo. I'm embarrassed to show anyone what "smartphone web viewing" is like... How could such an easy feature be left out... Its kind of pathetic honestly. Am I the only Android user in the world bothered by this??? Have you tried using the column formatting on the iPhone or the Pre??? Its makes viewing and fast navigation of a page so easy.

Sorry I kind of went on a rant there... If you couldn't tell I absolutely loathe the Android Browser... It honestly ruins even having a 4.3 inch screen for web browsing.

Other than that I enjoy Android. I really like the customization. I could use some advise on a good IM client...

i miss all the easy gestures and the minimal steps to achieve an action like swiping to delete, multitaksing, search...but from a functioanity standpoint Android is much superior!

.

No I also hate that about the browser, completely lose track of the word I was looking at, I hate it, same with mail, how it zooms in by default, and you cant zoom all the way out and see the whole full HTML email like it was meant to be seen. But I still love my Evo.

@Ahchoo I completely agree with you. The double tap to zoom is terrible i was trying to figure out if there was something in the settings that could be changed to make it better but no luck. I'm glad that i'm not the only one that found that ridiculously bad
