Thinking about getting a SGT 10.1

Hey Guys,

I've spent the past few weeks looking at the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (and lurking in the forums) and I've pretty much decided that it will be my first foray into the tablet world (and Android). I have a few questions though before I jump onboard. The majority of my work is done within Microsoft programs(Outlook, OneNote and Excel) and I was wondering how easily I will be able to integrate these into an android environment. And I was also wondering if anyone could clarify how applications for <3.0 Android devices run on tablets, is it a x2 view like the iPad does for iPhone/iPod apps

There are multiple microsoft office like apps for the xoom and they are amazing. If that isnt something that will entice you, you can always VNC to your desktop machine from the SGT and use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and use office apps from there.

not sure what your x2 comment means. the tablet apps are optimized for tablet specifically. remember, this isnt a big android phone like the ipad, its nice modified version of android.

I am not so sure about the microsoft programs, but I've tried editing a word Doc from my computer and it works great! All you need to do is download the driver to connect your tablet to your pc. After that, you can just drag and drop.

All of the <3.0 apps run fine on my tablet, and yes, I am sure the size is 2x on most of the applications I have noticed, but there are also alot of apps optimized for your tablet screen in high def.

I hope this helped, I received my 32 gb samsung galaxy 10.1 tablet in metallic gray yesterday, and I am LOVING IT! flash runs smoother than the xoom and very little if any lag with a live wallpaper and many widgets xD

There are numerous Office document editing programs for Android such as Docs To Go, QuickOffice, etc.

Android applications are forward compatible so every application in the market should work on the SGT10.1 (and other tablets). The reason Apple had that boxing effect with the iPad was because all iPhone apps up to that point had only been coded for one resolution (the original iPhone's). Because Android covers so many platforms and devices, Android developers almost always code apps to size correctly based on the device's screen size. So while the app may look a bit funny on a tablet, it will be full-screen and fully usable.

I was sure I didn't want a tablet. I was given a Nook Color for Father's Day, which I immediately rooted and loaded with CM7. I love it, and can't put it down. But....it has a hardware defect, and I will be exchanging it at Best Buy.

Except now I am thinking I could take the money and buy a GT10.1. Is the difference going to be worth $250 dollars?

you wont regret it for a second. android 3.1 is worth the 250 alone.

Plus, you can always download the Nook and/or Kindle apps onto the SGT

@ Kyle Gibb: Cool, I've been rocking a iPod Touch 1st gen since launch day and just assumed Android was using the same type of app scaling that Apple was using. It never dawned on me that each android phone potentially had a different resolution and screen size. Thats pretty cool that scaling is coded right in there with the app.

I am curious about this Ubunru on the Tab situation. What kinds of limitations are you seeing? I am looking for an Audacity type pogram for my Tab, but if all ihad to do was ire up my Tab, I wpould dive in.

I had an ipad 1 and iPhone 3 & 4 and must say android and Samsung have not let me down. Not perfect but nothing is! 100% happy with my gt10.

I'm trying to decide between the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 7. I think I may prefer the size of the 7, but like the idea of getting Android 3.1 Honeycomb with the 10.1 size. I was really interested in the 8.9, but evidently that model has some issues that have kept it from being released. Anyone have experience with both sizes? Looking for pros and cons of each.

Mine came preinstalled with quick office pro HD. Just register and edit, create, and view to your heart's content.

Yep, every tab I tried and bought had Quick Office Pro on it. Too bad you have to buy it for a phone, or just extract the .apk....

I originally bougt the 7 inch because I thought the 10 inch would be too big. The 7 inch was nice but after doing more research (which I should have done before buying the 7 in) I realized Honeycomb was the better way to go. I have since returned the 7 inch and bought the 10 inch and couldn't be happier. The 7 felt like a larger version of my phone while the 10 with honeycomb feels like what a tablet should be. Since the 10 is so thin and light the bigger size has not been an issue for me. Hope this helps.
