I actually thought that thats how it worked, so good to confirm. However, being google and who they are, you would have thought this features would have been duplicated unless there is some patent infringement. I'd beg them for a service like this, because it does seem like rough waters when it comes to MMS on Android. Maybe thats my perception, but if I want one thing to be hassle free, it would be texting. Is Google Hangouts supposed to be the iMessage copy?
Regardless, I could never go back to iOS so i've dealt with it. I know there are apps like that, such as Whats App, but everyone isn't using them, defeats the purpose, yes?
I am sure Google would love to do this but Apple was able to implement this within the default messages app so users can just text and it will use iMessage when it can... They can do this since they control all the hardware & software on all the iPhones in the world. Google makes Android but it is open-source so therefore manufactures / carriers can change things on within the OS that they don't like. Google hangouts but to have an "iMessage" guaranteed on every Android they'd have to make this off-limits so a manufacture or carrier couldn't just decide to remove it.
Also yes -- sadly the other person would have to be using Whatsapp or something like that in order to take advantage of it.
