Thinking About Returning My HTC One (for iPhone)

I know there are lots of "Should I get an HTC One" threads, but I went ahead and bought one, coming from iPhone, and the past week has been painful. My list of issues so far:
  • No visual voicemail unless I use AT&T's bloatware
  • No ability to connect to work email through native Mail client
  • Have to pay for Touchdown as no other Mail client works (Secure EAS, Enhanced Email)
  • I don't want Facebook in my Gallery (but I do in my Feed)
  • Having problems with iPhone users sending me texts as iMessage (had to disable iMessage on all my Apple devices)
  • Seems like I need multiple apps to do everything I need

I know iPhone isn't perfect, and there are so many things that Android and HTC do better (swipe, BlinkFeed is cool, Google Now rocks), but it's been a headache setting this phone up, and it's still not where I want it to be.
Is it worth sticking with it, waiting for Jelly Bean and hoping that the experience improves, or is this likely to be what my Android experience is, and it sounds like this is not for me?
Just want to make sure I make the right decision before I switch phones again and maybe miss out on cool stuff.
Thanks!

Well considering the One already has Jellybean on it LOL. I came back to iPhone last summer and the one I truly missed from Android was the built in visual voicemail. There are a lot of cool things like Zoe, boom sound, some cool widgets but the quality of the apps is still questionable and some devs are dragging their heels in aligning with Google's new design language since ICS was introduced so on the One you're going to have that annoying black bar for the the overflow options when the app doesn't have the action bar. I also came back to iPhone cause of the tight integration and battery life.

I would say do what's best for you and if going back to your iPhone is the most conducive option then I say yeah! Android is awesome I've used it for the last two years but its just not polished enough like iOS is IMHO.

Don't you think you should give it a little more time? It is going to take a little while to get used to the Android ecosystem if you were so ingrained in iOS. Obviously, it's your decision to make, but it seems more like you're just used to Apple devices and want your Android device to do the same thing and a little more, so I'd say give it some time and try out different apps/settings/tweaks and you might actually like it.

The issue with iMessage is apples fault. Log in with your apple ID and unregister your phone. Then tell all your friends to go into their contacts and change the label next to your number from iPhone to Home or main, something other than iPhone. Blame apple for that one, not Google. Removing FB from your gallery is gonna require a update from HTC if they want to allow users to deselect that.

Don't use ATT messages app or else your texts end up there too.

A few things...

-While you can't use visual voicemail unless you use AT&T's app, you could use Google Voice (which is great).
-The iPhone doesn't do Facebook in a feed/gallery at all, so how can that be a negative for the One?
-Not our fault you have friends using iPhones and Apple's stuff not working well ;-)
-You don't need multiple apps to do everything. It just depends on what you want.

I'd give it more time. When I initially switched from iOS to Android, it wasn't easy. I had set ways of doing things for years that all of a sudden changed. If you really want to use the One long term, just get used to the way Android and the way HTC does things. It's pretty smart, intuitive, and you'll find things that Android can do for you that iOS never could.

I left the iPhone 5 and got this phone. I love it. The sound is amazing when listening to music. The imessage thing takes just a flick to shut off on your old iPhone, I don't see that as being an issue. This is the "iPhone killer" if you ask me. (I've owned a 3G, 4, and a 5)

Is there a way to disable Facebook pictures in the gallery?

I know there are lots of "Should I get an HTC One" threads, but I went ahead and bought one, coming from iPhone, and the past week has been painful. My list of issues so far:
  • No visual voicemail unless I use AT&T's bloatware - Agreed but use Google Voice. Best Voicemail service around and free transcription.
  • No ability to connect to work email through native Mail client - Not sure as I don't use exchange but there are better mail apps in the play store. Doesn't hurt to try one.
  • Have to pay for Touchdown as no other Mail client works (Secure EAS, Enhanced Email) - No experience here
  • I don't want Facebook in my Gallery (but I do in my Feed) - Yeah it's "Facebook for HTCSense". They try to shove it in your face everywhere. No real solution here to not have it in your gallery but have it in blinkfeed.
  • Having problems with iPhone users sending me texts as iMessage (had to disable iMessage on all my Apple devices) - Yes this is the case and should be expected and iOS devices will send iMessage first if available. No way around it other that turning iMessage off or removing your number as a place where iMessages can be received.
  • Seems like I need multiple apps to do everything I need - You don't need multiple apps, just better ones. Sometimes, the stock app just isn't good for everyone but there are a lot of apps that so what stock apps do and more. Try some out.

Responses in Bold. Let me offer my opinion from a user who frequently switches devices and platforms. In my opinion, iOS native apps are > Android native apps. Not even a question in my book. The good thing about Android is that there are almost always better alternatives in the play store for free. The thing is if you want to take the time to find those apps. A lot of users like using their device straight out of the box and some don't mind a little tinkering here and there. And you're probably experiencing the feeling of switching to something you've never used before and getting used to it. And it's totally understandable. I would say try it for another week or so and if you don't like it, go back to iPhone. I would never ever say any device or platform is for everyone. Everyone has different needs. Check out the below and you may find some info and apps that will help you.

when 30-50% of your friends dump their iPhones for the One or S4 over the next few months, and they will, then at least that problem will be solved.

haha... I think it'll depend on what Apple will show in WWDC this summer. If they come up with something interesting/fresh, I'm sure that percentage will be lower, with them just waiting to buy the next iDevice.

I hear ya but I have 2 teenage daughters who up until maybe 3-4 months ago wouldnt dream of owning anything other than Apple. Now many of their friends are going Android and they want to dump their iPhones. This is anecdotal of course.

Yes, but to do so also shuts it off in your BlinkFeed.
I believe if you go to Topics & Services from your Feed's settings option, you can go to Services & Apps and remove Facebook. This will also remove it from Gallery, I believe. There's a thread on here about how to do it...

Yeah you don't have you use Blink Feed you can set one of your other Homepages as the default Homepage instead of Blink feed by default its set to Blink feed. I like to check out Blink feed from time to time still a nice feature for news and FB but it all depends on what you like.

Get new friends/problem solved ;-)

Honestly, there is work involved in getting android to the point where it really shines for you as an individual. If you are at all tech savy and visit some forums like you are doing and try to learn then you will be much happier with android than you can ever be with apple.

But some people don't want to spend the time (understandably) or go through the effort.

Just ask yourself if you are willing to invest the time and effort involved to get a superior experience, or would you rather go back to iphone where a decent experience is easy out of the box, but can't reach where android can.

The third option, to just suffer with your android phone as purchased is probably the least attractive of the 3.

Good luck.

this is very helpful, thanks.
I just turned off imessage on all my devices, that seems to have worked, though I'm not sure if iPhone users have to manually send the message as text, not iMessage.

Once you turn off imessage on your devices you will automatically get the messages as texts. Regarding work email, I actually find the One to have a better exchange client than the iphone. I'm curious as to what problems you're having.

You can also consider another launcher such as Nova or Apex if you want a more vanilla Android Jelly Bean experience. I use Google Voice for my vm needs which is great with email transcriptions since I can't have my phone in the work building. As for email, what protocol are you trying to use that it isn't letting you get your mail? You can contact your IT dept. too as more than likely, they are Android users :)
