Thinking of getting a Droid 2

Hi - first time here but I am hoping you guys can give me some insight into whether this is a good or bad idea.

I'm thinking of switching from my horribly outdated phone to a Droid 2. The main reasons is, I'm using a horribly outdated phone (Samsung Rogue), and would like an Android phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard. The problem I'm running into is, the Droid 2 is still priced at $199 at Verizon. I'm on the fence about laying down this much for a year old phone. I have heard about some new phones out now or on the horizon - Thunderbolt, Bionic, etc, but none of these have the QWERTY keys.

What do you suggest? Is the Droid 2 worth $199 at this stage of it's life? Is there something else I should wait for?

Thanks for any help.

Without a doubt the DROID 2 is a good phone but no I don't think it's worth 199. Honestly if the merge were to come out I would say buy that but if you can't wait go ahead and get a d2 it wont go out of date that quickly especially if gb were to be released for it

If you're willing to wait another month or so, AC just posted a blog about new phones coming out in April/May on VZW. The question is, do you want 4G, or no? The D2 is a very powerful phone, but it will be locked in to the slower 3G.

As far as price, shop around. Best Buy, Amazon, Radio Shack, etc often have deals that are lower than the carriers.

Good luck!

I'll check out the blog. 4G does me do good where I live (upstate NY), so that's not as much of a concern.

I'm finding some of the better deals for the phone end up locking me into some other plan that is worse than the one I have. The service plan I have with VWZ is a "legacy" plan and no longer offered, but since I've had it I'm grandfathered along. Maybe in the end it's worth the $199 just to keep the lower service plan. I'm not sure.

Thanks for the input. I'll probably be back soon once I check into some of the suggested. :p

Any idea if/when the Merge would be coming to Verizon?

If you have a costco around you I just paid 39.99 for a Droid 2 Global (Upgrade) and So far love it!

If you are eligible for an upgrade, I think Bestbuy has them for like $150.

No Costco, but I do have a Bestbuy nearby. I'll be checking that out. .com didn't have it, but perhaps the store itself.

Or maybe get a certified like new Droid 2 global for 99.99.

VZW is crazy to be charging "new" device prices for "old" devices. The Storm 2 is still $199.99 with 2 yr. upgrade.

Are you serious????

At the most right now that phone should be like $49.99 with 2yr. upgrade.

I totally agree. I figured it would be somewhat discounted at this point, but alas, $199.

A got a brand new R2D2 on the VZW website for $100. It's good stuff I absolutely love this phone!

Go the eBay route, you'll be able to get a D2 or a D2G for about $200 and not be required to sign a new contract at all. Just stay month to month.

I love my Droid 2 Global aside from the bulk, and given the specs I'd say $200 is warranted. Given you will have the thing for at least 2 years, I'd say get what you want now than settle for something cheaper you don't really want.

No, the R2 is just the D2 dressed up and with some R2 themed wallpapers and ringtones. The D2G has a 1.2ghz processor and gsm capabilities for worldwide use. If you're debating between the two I would def go with the global. I got the D2 on release day; if the global came out at the same time I def would've gotten it.

The D2G is $39.99 now at costco. At this point with all the issues I've had with mine, I wouldn't pay more than that. Certainly not $200! Plus costco has a 90 day return policy. I'm on my second D2G since Feb, and apparently this one is defective and needs to go back, too. Not happy, and missing my old out-of-date blackberry. :(

Thanks , I wasn't sure. I recently got a D2G and am finding my way around coming from a BB

I'm thinking of getting the Droid 2 Global as well. Too bad none of the other devices coming out have physical keyboards.

the merge may be just around the corner, its HTC so it will likely have an unlocked bootloader and a easy enough root method. this means cyanogenmod official support is likely. Your device will have a very long lifespan and you'll be happy with it for a dew years.
