Thinking of Getting HTC One but have reservations - advice?

Downloaded Auto screen on (free app) and have been using it for a few days. It works pretty darn well, maybe I have to resort to the button 5% of the time, and that's only when it's very low light in the room. I really only got this app because I don't want to have to struggle with the power button when I'm in the car. This app has effectively resolved any problems I had with the missing home button. I came over from the iPhone 4s.

As for the "magic touch", I've found that going with a more sensitive setting and only one tap works best. The way I have it set, if I just grasp the top part of the phone for a half second and let go, it works. I haven't had any trouble with it turning on accidentally in my purse.

I am trying really hard to love the HTC One, but the lack of a home button, and the fact that soo many apps seem to not follow guidelines and waste some screen space drawing the additional button is frustrating. (Select button?)

When I moved to android with the s3 last year I was very much in the same way. I didn't like it, it wasn't ios and it did stuff differently. I bitched and moaned about all sorts of little niggles. I came so close to taking it back but I persisted. After about three months I forgot about most of the niggles and just reveled in all the great new features android has over ios. So stick with it! You will soon discover it is far better than your iPhone. Btw, to unlock the phone you press the power button and slide anywhere on the screen, you don't have to do it at the bottom.

I have not had a phone with a physical home button in over two years. It's something I do not miss at all. You may have enjoyed it and found it useful on your iphone, but think of it like this. The iphone was a smaller phone and the home button was very easy to reach. On the S4 you're holding a giant phone where you have to contort your thumb just to hit the home button below the 5 inch screen. For me it's uncomfortable unless I were to only press the home button while the phone was laying on a table.

Ha Ha ha. Sorry but this is pretty funny. The phone is 2.75 inches wide. The home button is in the center of the phone so it is less than an inch and 1 1/2" from the edge of the phone. Believe me, as an S4 owner the home button is extremely easy to reach. The lack of a home button on the HTC One causes a black band to appear and take up screen space in some APPS.

Actually, it is the lack of a menu button, not home button, that causes the black band you refer to. The One has a home button. ;-)
