After waiting for note 8 I think I'm paying for a lot of things I don't need like Bixby and the pc feature. I do miss the pen though but net essential.. Biggest single concern is the battery.. How's the software updates for you? Probably wait for mate 10. Any comments thanks

I bought a UK one a week ago. Got an instant update (b190) which had security updates to June 2017 however as the system is so smooth I have not found any need for an update. The phone is superb. I had a nexus previously and whilst I got monthly security updates (by side loading) I had a few fundamental problems which made me choose another phone. Looking good at firmware finder there are later updates than b190 but they aren't approved yet so you would have to risk them

Just got one yesterday. Updated and so far it's been great. Smooth as can be. Almost freaky smooth if you are used to a Samsung. So far, for 450 dollars this thing is a dream and a delight. That's less than HALF the price of a new Note!

It's also last year's model. Not that that's a bad thing but since you mentioned Samsung, you can get the galaxy s8 which is a current year flagship for less as of this post.

Where's a link to the S8 for that price? I have a friend who might want one. Thanks!

That's a link to a Verizon contract phone. The unlocked is $580...

You just need someone on Verizon to buy it, or if you don't know anyone with Verizon, then you can open a line of service, get the phone and port out to another carrier to cancel the line. It's a bit of work but it would be cheaper than paying for the unlocked one.

The Verizon one is factory sim unlocked but it does lack some LTE bands for other carriers. Though you can flash the unlocked software onto it to get the LTE bands for other carriers.

I came from Note 4 to mate 9... Huge jump in quality of product.... Note 4 was great as a daily work horse and had the pen to take notes (and wow my clients) but the camera and battery were aging on the note..... Mate 9 superior in both as you'd expect.... EMUI not too bad.... I had Nova on the note... And I don't feel the need to mute the Huawei software... It doesn't have "waive to wake the screen".... Small sacrifice for superior hardware. Call quality is better.... As is the speakerphone for use in a meeting. My note didn't have much lag after 3 years surprisingly.... But this is another level of speed. The reviews are true! Mate 9 on special for the win... Or wait out for the 10.

I think the new screen ratio is awful for the note line. I think I've owned every not available but I think I'm going to pass on this one. There just seems to be so much less need for the pen if the screen isn't as wide. I've had the mate 9 for a few months and the s8 plus which I sold. I think the mate is probably the fastest Android phone I've used.

I bought my wife a S8+ today. She wanted a larger phone and she was used to her Samsung S7. So I figured the couple of extra hundred dollars over the Mate9 would be worth it to keep her in her comfort zone (she doesn't like switching phone manufacturers).

Working the S8+ confirmed everything that I thought. It is noticeably less fluid than the Mate9. It sure feels good in the hand though -- the Mate9 is a bit wide and she probably wouldn't have enjoyed it, especially since she likes thick cases (she's dropped her phone once or twice and the cases have saved them).

Also don't care for the 2:1 screen ratio. I prefer the 16:9 on my Mate.

You won't be disappointed on the performance. Especially with the newer Kirin 970, you'll be enjoying a beastly chip with the Mate 10. But with that price point, I'd rather wait till it's cheaper or get the Mate 9.

I did the same. Got a mate 9 a few weeks back and its fine to last me until the prices change. To be honest I may leave the mate 10 purely on the screen ratio. Much prefer the wider 16:9 screens

I have the Mate 9 now and I love it. I was going to wait for the Mate 10 but, I was able to pre-order the Note 8 for 533.00 with tax and shipping included. Even with that excellent price for the Note 8, I am still waiting for the official announcement for the Mate 10. I will then decided if I will keep the Note 8.

The mate 10 would have to be really good if its $1000 vs your $533 note 8, if you keep the mate 10 over it

Did you do the trade in to get that low of a price for the Note 8?
