Just wanted to say not to give up. After almost two weeks I got it tonight. I ended up using a combination of methods that I have named the Borgeyfart method. I used the Kingston 4GB class 4 card and popped it in right as you hear the little clicking noise going into recovery and viola!

Huge thanks to Borgey for holding my hand for the past two nights in IRC trying to get this right!

A word to the wise: if you get root, DO NOT UNDO IT.

The night the ADB method came out, I managed to get it on the second try using the SD card trick 5 seconds in. Today, long story short, I ended up accidentally restoring back to the factory settings. No problem, I'll just re-root. Well, apparently I was extremely lucky getting it the first time, because none of the methods seem to be working right now. I'm going to go buy the 10 dollar PNY card and see if that makes any difference, but right now I am extremely annoyed at myself for restoring my phone and losing root. Anyway, just wanted to vent a little, I'll post an update tomorrow if/when I get rooted again.

Well I'll go ahead and tell you. If you have tried and tried and tried and are ready to give up downgrade your phone to the release 2.1 before the initial update. Purchase the $10 2GB PNY black box card at best buy or walmart format it with 512kb blocks FAT32 and try the alternate method in the office wiki for UnRevoked. After doing that I got it second try after two weeks and god knows how many hours. So don't give up, and don't give it up after you get it because literally it's a 50ms window or less.

Ok I downgraded using the guide from XDA, but which alternative method are you referring to specifically, the one found here: http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:adb_in_recovery ? I'm heading down to best buy tomorrow to grab the 10 dollar PNY 2 gig card, and I'll try the method that worked for you and hopefully I'll get this thing and save myself two weeks of grief.

Just so I'm sure to buy the correct card, this is the one you purchased correct?

@SeizedPropaganda, yes that is the alternate method I'm talking about and the PNY card. You won't regret that card at all $10 is well worth a root in my opinion.

Well, people who have not gotten to lucky with getting rewted DO NOT GIVE UP!!! If you do have the right SD card IT WILL COME TO YOU! Remember you only need to get it once. I also do not understand how the OP lost root? Superuser.apk is a system/app not a data/app and so isn't everything else root related. So a factory reset should not effect that at all. I have done a million factory resets on my phones and never one have they been returned to stock images.

I used steps 6 through 12 of those instructions to get into recovery, but I used the drivers from -> public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]

Once in recovery mode, I finished up by using the instructions under the heading of "I just got ADB running in recovery mode! Now what?" on -> public:adb_in_recovery [RootWiki]

I'm using the 16 gig Sandisk class 2 that came in my Moto Droid.

Oh, and I had problems with the drivers under XP Pro SP2, so I switched to Win7 and the drivers loaded fine.

Well I dunno if it was downgrading, the new card, or both, but I now have root again. I didn't even have to do the SD card trick, it worked perfectly just entering into reboot recovery. Thanks for the tips man, much obliged! I will now proceed to have fun flashing some roms :D

Good luck buddy.......ROMS can get addicting, I'm already addicted and haven't flashed one yet. I know from the BB days once I got to flashing over hybrids I couldn't stop every week was something different....man......my name is Qazme and I'm an addict.

Or use this i got this after my second try! Finally got Root with 2gig card that came with phone - xda-developers

I watched the video, then i started from step 7 on the list then when i got the different cdm line were supposed to pull up, i finished off the video then did a nand flash!

So I tried this method, but instead went by the unrevoked root method. I got to where I began pushing files to my sdcard file, but it came up with an error. Then I tried starting over, but couldn't get the device to connect again............................... Well here's to trying again tomorrow

If it errored during the file push that means you never where in recovery mode. Try yet try again!

I can't get root no matter what I try. 4 SD cards, 3 computers and a few weeks later and still nothing.

If you are confident with the cards you are trying (I used the mythical 2GB PNY) have your tried downgrading to pre-patch? I think above anything that's what helped me. Rolled back to the version before the patch and I got root in two tries.....keep trying from time to time you won't regret it in the end.

I tried the 2GB card the phone came with, the 2GB PNY card, 16GB Sandisk, and lastly the Kingston 4GB. I have not tried rolling back the OS. Kind of afraid I will screw the phone up if I do that.

rolling back will not mess up your stock ROM at all. but it has been proven that it does not matter at all. people in the IRC and mostly UnrEVOked did a lot of testing with that. The trick is to delay adb to start up AFTER the phone thinks it's killed it already ( thats why you need a ****ty slow SD Card ). But hey, it is worth a try, one thing we know also is that every phone is different with this race condition. It sucks we can't have just one method but that's the way it is. So if you have not been able to get root yet just experiment with different timing and techniques and you will eventually get it. like prior posts have said tho DO NOT GIVE UP! I WILL BE WORTH IT IN THE LONG RUN TRUST ME!

Rolling back with the RUU changes you back to the factory ROM actually. I'm not sure how you can say it doesn't matter at all, from my two week experience I couldn't get root at all but after rolling back I got root in two tries. So YMMV is the best thing to say I believe. Would love to find out exactly what controls that race condition, especially considering it's different on each phone.....damn phones.
