thoughts on the V20?

I really want to like the V20 because of the audio stuff (yes, I'm one of THOSE guys). I just need the camera to be fast and the display to be mostly accurate.

I've mostly migrated to wireless audio but the camera array for me is the most appealing thing of the V20. One would hope that with such a solid camera/video setup they'd naturally hook it up with a colour accurate display. I do wonder if they're using a wider colour gamut than sRGB, though.

If I'm not mistaken, the G4 display was set to aRGB, so wouldn't be surprised to see that on the V20 too. Then again, web published stuff is in sRGB. Even if you create in another gamut, sites will convert it to sRGB (often losing more quality than if you did it on your own editor). So to use something else on a phone would almost be pointless.

Even when it comes to advanced photography, most people agree aRGB really only applies to images set for printing. If you only plan to publish to the web, stick to sRGB.

The G4 tried to be aRGB, but wasn't quite good enough to reach it.

Android doesn't have color management at the OS level, so having wider than sRGB is useless right now. The OS just sends sRGB anyway so then the display is "stretching" the colors (for lack of a better term). This is not a good solution.

To go higher than sRGB the OEM needs to build something in to the OS themselves to enable this for particular apps (like a white list to enable the wider color range when you open that app). I have a feeling this is what Samsung is going to do on the Note 7 when Amazon finally enables HDR streaming on it.

IMO, if a display is not capable of DCI-P3 the OEM should just stick with an accurate sRGB. This is just a better solution all around, for the OEM and the customer.

I'm hopeful. This is the phone I'm really excited about. At least the battery is removable and it has the "Doze" feature... We'll see when more reviews come out/when units are released. I'm heavily anticipating its release!

Hers another little video showing off done features of the v20. Biggest takeaway for me here is a theme engine to customize the awful colors in the notification shade and menus, and the ability to change the display dpi.

I'm hoping and I know it's just wishful thinking, but it would be nice if they brought ux 5.0 over to the older Lg G4. I still have mine and really wish it had true theming to it. Not just a launcher you can theme. Both Samsung and HTC had ui theming before LG did.

The V20 is looking better and better to a lot of Note 7 owners, but seems irrelevant if no device to buy. Samsung might right the Note 7 ship before the V20 even leaves the dock.

LG misses again perhaps.
