Thoughts on the Vigor

Moto Bullet and the Moto Jet, google it.

I did. This is what I found. Read the first paragraph. Ponder it for a second, then read it again. If these are facts that you would use to make decisions in your every day life, I genuinely feel for you...

As for the phones to which the article speaks, you could put a Tegra 6 chip in it (I realize that this does not exist, just using it to make a point) and with a qHD Pentile screen, it's still going to look like crap next to a Vigor.

If Moto doesn't seriously take a look at screen tech, it doesn't matter to me what is under the hood. It will never find a space in my pocket.

We'll see how much you like your Vigor when that screen eats through your battery in a few minutes, Motorola is using pentile screens for a reason and early reports of Bionic battery life make it seem like a good decision to me. Besides, I prefer the crisp look of qHD pentile over overblown SAMOLED+ screens anyway.

Reports are that the S4 Snapdragon Kraits have been sampling. I guess I jumped the gun in saying that Tegra2 and OMAP 4 are last years technology but what I meant it was a last generation Tech.

The gTablet which was released near year-end last year does have a Tegra 2, so I'm not comoletely out of my mind and all cortex-A8 chips are much older but its all semantics. That leaves us with the OMAP 4 which is fairly contemporary but still built on 45nm chip fabs.

I agree both CPU and screen Tech will contribute to battery life but we need both worlds and an optimized Android version to take advantage of all the new tech.

That's when they are able to be put into phones. The processors have to be released before they can be utilized in a phone.

Also, the Targa was rumored to be a quad-core device. See how that turned out.

i was merely pointing out the fact that its not so far fetched to think that quad cores will be out soon. also pretty sure that the tegra-3 was demo'd already was it not?

moto could have a few that they are toying around with.... ya know ES samples....

Yeah, there's a lot of semantics going on in this debate. I enjoyed reading it. I understand the point about "last gen tech" (probably not even a great term either) and the grouping of Tegra2 and OMAP 4, but within that grouping it's clear that the OMAP 4 would be at the type of it, and for the foreseeable future I would be completely happy with that in my device.

Simply put, there always is something better coming down the line.

But would a 1.5Ghz MSM8660 really not compare well with the 1Ghz OMAP4? That article linked a few posts back seams to make it out to be more than capable. All I read on sites is that the Scorpion is A8 based but that article says otherwise. It says that it has one similarity but is otherwise custom. It also seams to be saying the 'Krait' is simply the Scorpion chip shrunk. Is that article accurate or is there other good read explaining each chip and difference? Maybe I am also missing something?

Yeah, I did not really want to get into the details of chip archs which is more on Anandtech type blogs but to answer your Qs. the Scorpion cores are Async but are based on A8 while the Krait is based on A9 which include out-of-order execution and other optimizations. The A9 specs are built for MP type chips while the A8 was never really designed for that. Krait also supports DDR3 memory which improves upon thruput as well. We should not forget the GPU performance because this contributes to overall experience also, the Krait has a much improved multi-pipelined GPU as compared to the Scorpion core. The OMAP 4 in its current incarnation uses the same GPU as last generation SoCs namely the SGX540. Both the recently announced 4470 OMAP and the A5 uses a nextgen GPU based on the SGX54xMP which are at least 4x as powerful as the original single piped GPU. The 4470 also has a 2D compositing engine which accelerates OpenGL 2D visuals which will improve the desktop experience tremendously.

Both the newer OMAP 4 and Snapdragon SoCs are runnig Windows 8 with full graphics acceleartion and next generation 3D and 2D desktops and gaming.

Since HTC is a top-tier Snapdragon OEM, I would suspect it to have 1st dibs on the latest and greatest. The advantage of the nextgen Qualcomm chips is the extremely high level of integration including the 4G baseband antenna. This integration gives it greater control over power requirements and thruput not to mention a world phone capable device.

My 2 Cents

i worry about this phone being crap due to the first gen LTE chipset.. im holding out till next year when they have smaller phones and better power management. not to mention voice over lte and the specs race will have evened out.

This does have the 2nd gen chip from what I heard and seen. This is apart Verizon's second wave of LTE flagships.

I really am looking forward to buying the Motorola Droid Bionic. I love HTC and Sense UI but I wish that I would have bought a HTC phone earlier because now Sense is OVERKILL and it makes the phone more sluggish and has too many animations. I like that the Vigor is rumored to have Beats Audio because I have a pair of Beats. I am just not sure that it is worth the wait. Even when the Vigor comes out, a few weeks later a better phone will come out. The Vigor is pretty full of just rumors as well.

Having had the htc incredible and the motorola dx I got a feel for each device from close to their initial release date(s) and currently using them.
Im sticking with the htc products and no plans to get any other motorola brands.
The only other device upcoming is possible the nexus prime .If both of these devices come out on vzw I will have to decide between the prime and vigor :).I only have one upgrade available at this time

I'm only worried about sense 3.5 I like sense 3.0 better and I don't like how they got rid of the dock bar and all of the menus are grey now.

I think it looks pretty awesome in the pictures, but then again they always do! Will check it out in store as soon as it arrives before I make a judgement

I kinda wonder how odd it'll look if the rumors that say ICS won't have physical buttons are true? Seeing duplicates (the physical and touchscreen) would throw me off, lol

I bet there will be a way to turn off the on-screen buttons so that it doesn't look weird on phones with physical buttons.

I am willing to bet that will be the case. Keep in mind, HTC devs are going to have to "Sense"ify ICS for each individual phone model. I'm sure that will cross their minds...

I loved my DINC as well. I was able to upgrade early and I now have the Thunderbolt. Two weeks into it next Tuesday to be exact. My only complaint is the battery but I knew this going into it. But I have a battery saver app that is helping. I won't get the extended battery. I don't like the hump on the back. I have small hands and that just wouldn't be comfortable for me. I wish they could come up with a battery that works well and not make the phone so huge !

HTC Sense is the best and I am excited to see what the Vigor will be like. I can't upgrade but I like keeping abreast on new devices. I could get it on my internet line, but I really am pleased with my TB

If battery life is better and it is completely faster than the bolt count me in. Sometimes the bolt gets bogged down for me, but I love it. I really like the HTC form factor. I'm a fan of sammy and moto also, but for now I'm sticking with HTC
