Thoughts on trading to Motorola Photon 4G ?

There has been some good discussion about upgrading from the standard EVO to the 3d. How about trading over to the Motorola Photon 4G?

I know -- no Sense. But, with another launcher (Launcher Pro, ADW, etc.), do you really need Sense?

I have absolutely no interest in 3d, and I don't want to drop down to a 5mp camera. The Photon advertises an 8mp camera, and seems to compare very well to the EVO 3d.

HTC has really irked me with the OTA Gingerbread mess. I'm just about ready to commit to a whole new product line. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for my trusty ol' Motorola StarTac . . . [sigh]. Now THAT was a phone!

i am an HTC loyalist. i prefer HTC build quality, design, OS update urgency, and of course Sense over all other competitors. hence, i am waiting for an HTC device on Sprint with a 4.5-5"+ display and quite possibly no capactive buttons, little bezel, and even ice cream sammmmmich - which will be a TRUE successor to the EVO. the current crop (EVO 3D, Photon, et al) are all pretenders to the throne. they don't deserve a shot at the title.

IMO if you're going to burn an upgrade - burn it on something worthy of an upgrade. don't burn it on an incremental evolutionary device.

Oh the Star Tac, what a good phone. So was the T720 and V551 and then the Razr. Some great devices. I kind of miss my T720. It never rebooted on me. Not once.
Sure it could only make / recieve phone calls and texts. But was it ever reliable.

I am NOT a big fan of Moto Blurr. What HTC and Samsung put on their devices is fine by be, but Blur just sucks. Sorry..

I've actually been considering this exact same situation (and oddly enough, my last Motorola phone was also a StarTac on Sprint... man that thing was a trooper). I love the Evo, but I've had numerous problems over the past few months (on Evo number 3, and its earpiece speaker sucks). I've been tempted by the Nexus S 4G, but the signal issues have made me wary. Not a huge fan of the 3vo.

The Photon though is tempting. On paper it looks great. The hands-on I've seen suggest that Moto's skin isn't all that obtrusive, but I really like Sense. The Photon will also ship with a locked bootloader, but rumors persist that Moto might unlock it down the road (much like HTC with the 3vo). I'm also not sure how quickly it would get updated, the big reason I've had my eye on the Nexus.

When the Photon drops we'll get to play with it and see what it's like. The latest rumors in that department suggest we'll see it by the end of this month. I think that will be the best and only way to make a decision.

What is MotoBlur? How does MotoBlur compare to HTC Sense?
I am considering a Photon myself but need advice from this forum. Thanks.

MotoBlur is Motorolas version of HTC Sense. Its their overlay of android to make it more motorolaish.
They have their own widgets, home screens, icons, stuff like that.
The thing i dont like is some Blur enabled phones require you to sing into a special motorola blur acct before you can access any part of the phone.
I dont like having to do that. My job requires me to wipe and test devices and phones like these present additional testing time.

The 2.3 gingerblur on my droid 3 does not require a sign in. I am assuming this is the new version going forward.

My guess is they stopped it.
It was on the backflip and the back something else. LOL a phone that was similar to it.
Newer devices such as the Droid Pro do not have the sign in.
I was a big fan of Samsungs overlay. It was good with out being processor heavy. HTC Sense seems to be more on the fancy side and i think uses the processor more. Again just what i have noticed over the spand of the different devices i have used.
testing a Droid Pro for work and it seems nice. I also like the Droid INC.
In love with my EVO 3D, and miss the screen of my EPIC.
So pretty much all phones have their pros and cons.
