Thread to speculate on ICS for the Photon

I'm new to android and the Photon is my first phone (coming from Pre-). I've seen ICS and think that its the closest thing i've seen to WebOS. I hope Moto gets it to this phone asap.

Well, over on XDA they are speculating about 3rd party ICS ROMs coming in February. Right now I'm optimistic we will get ICS, one way or another.

I would like to think that the MoPho will get the ICS update whenever it's ready to launch.

I'm skeptical. The Photon was released about a month before the Bionic and Motorola explicitly stated that the Bionic would receive ICS while saying nothing about the Photon.

I'm starting to think that the different processors (Tegra 2 vs OMAP) are a bigger deal than previously thought.

I'm thinking about checking Craigslist and eBay for a good used Nexus S so I can be assured of ICS. :-[

There is an alpha version of CM9 posted over on XDA if anyone is interested.

I saw a video online of a middle Eastern guy having ics running on a photon with most things working. However if a homebrew solution is found i doubt webtop will work which would kind of suck. I would also miss the cardock mode. So I hope an official update is provided.

There are a couple guys on xda citing 'inside sources' that ICS development is underway at Motorola right now. They've been right before, but I too take that with a grain of salt.

However, silence <> no ICS.

And Yes, Tegra 2 vs. OMAP is a big deal...Nvidia has to figure out what they need to do to their HAL layer to support the calls from ICS for the OMAP HAL layer. That takes time to research, develop, test, and distribute so that Moto can start building ICS around their phones. (And, Nvidia may have already done that.)

I am also hoping for a Moto official release as I do want the webtop, car mode, kickstand mode to all work with ICS. But...that all takes time!

It isn't just some setup.exe and ICS starts running...there's considerable effort & expense that has to occur. Moto's blog said they wanted to get ICS on as many of their phones as possible...I take that as a very good sign.

AND...maybe most importantly...Sprint has to also want ICS on the Photon. Which means Sprint's apps bloatware likely being developed, tested & installed, as well as all the carrier testing Sprint would likely do before distributing ICS out to us.

Add all that up and ICS has to go through a lot of changes/development/testing before we'll ever see it. It isn't just Motorola's decision...so let's not forget that.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm willing to wait for it to make sure it works right the first time too.

Cautiously optimistic?

I am certain that Motorola's only flagship phone on Sprint is more likely to get ICS than not. It would look bad on Motorola, and Sprint has been one of the friendlier carriers when it comes to updates.

This is not even 6 months old.

Yep, cautiously optimistic. Things can change on a dime in the tech world...so I'm cautiously optimistic. Until Moto & Sprint publicly commit to the upgrade that's where I'm at.

You want to be 'Certain'...be my guest. I'll be certain when its on my phone...been burned too many times by this kind of thing. So...I'm cautiously optimistic.

(However, its also USCC's flagship device, so I truly believe we'll see it...but...until its on my device...I'm not changing my opinion on getting it.)

Rumors I am hearing is that the Photon might not be getting ICS. Again, these are all rumors so don't read too much into it.

I personally believe we'll get ICS.

Motorola has already committed to ICS upgrades for their Tegra 2 tablets...which means all the hard work will already be done.

Plus...Moto, as a Google subsidiary, will want to keep up their end of the bargain regarding upgrading devices for 18 mos. after the release date...the Photon's been out what? 6 mos?

(This is of course my own speculation & opinion, but I also don't look for daily updates on it.)

This is just one of those things where patience is required...I don't read or put much stock into the rumors...as was just said...they're rumors, and often wrong.

They have to upgrade their Tegra tablets. The Photon is easy after that. It WILL get the upgrade... do not fear. Guarantee you'll see it before any Samsung phone gets it.

You mean other then the Nexus and Nexus S right??

Xoom tablets have just got the update rolled out. Just give it some time and they should get to the Photon. There are a lot of devices for them to modify and test ICS on. No reason with the specs/age of the Photon that it shouldn't get ICS.

Any news on this? I want Moto to know we are active on this topic and fully expecting the Photon to get the ICS update.

I am considering moving to the Photon (the GSII radio is awful), and I specifically asked the Sprint rep if ICS is coming to Photon - and she said yes, because it's their "newest" Motorola Android. Of course, take that with a grain of salt, but that's what I heard.

ICS is really nice (I also had the Gnex), but whether the Photon will be able to carry it or not, remains to be seen. Has anyone contacted Motorola to ask them directly?
