Thunderbolt 3G data shuts off when sleeping/screen off?

I have my TB on 3G Auto PRL during the day when I don't need to use 4G.

However, I find that when it's been sleeping/on standby with the screen off for a little while, all the cell data turns off. I can tell because I don't get email notifications, and when I wake it up, there's no 1x, 3G, or 4GLTE icon in the top bar. However, I do have the "reception bars" lit up, indicating that it has some kind of connection -- voice maybe?

When I wake it up, I have to give it a good 5-15s to re-establish a cell data connection. Sometimes it doesn't ever come back, and I have to toggle to 4G and back to 3G to establish a connection.

This is a problem for me because I don't get email and text (pushes OR pulls) while it's not connected and sleeping.

I don't think this is an eHRPD/Rev.A issue, because my data works fine after I've let it come back.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,

-j

I don't have that problem. Do you have any battery saver apps on your phone? Some of those apps are set to shut off data when the screen is off to save battery. Try adjusting the settings for those apps.

How is the data signal in your area during the day? Does it have a history of being weak? Are you inside of a building? Sounds like a weak signal causing the phone to get stuck in searching mode.

Yeah, the 4 bars without a data icon means you have good voice signal strength.

Any chance a Network Extender is involved?

In addition to the Phone Info 3G toggle, you could also try the eHRPD fix to see if that makes a difference.

@ragingyeti

Hm, good idea, but no, I don't.

@FrankXS

Yep, my data signal strength is pretty crappy during the day.

I'm in a big high rise and usually -80 to -90 dBm, 1x, 1-2 bars most of the time. What's weird is that when I have no data, it's at 3-4 bars, and once the data kicks in, it's at 1-2 bars (although maybe it's due to another factor, like a grip of death?? ;) )

No network extender/femtocell.

I'll try the eHRPD fix -- just didn't want to take the 10%+ battery hit from rebooting, but oh, well. ;)

Thanks!

Mine does this only at my house and we have a network extender so that might be the problem or weak signal. Also check to see if you have WiFi enabled that can do it too

Your bars drop when you are connected to data because it can only show one signal strength at a time. Your voice signal is still 4 bars, but your data is only 2 and the phobe will only show you the more advanced signal strength.

This I did not know -- wow.

Thank you!

i dont know if this helps, but to conserve battery, theres a setting on my evo shift in settings<wireless and networks<mobile networks<enable always on mobile data, do you have it unchecked? because i do, and basically what it does is when you're phone is on standby, or locked, it turns off your data signal ONLY, it dosent put you in airplane mode, or turn your radio off. its there so when you're not using data when the screen is off, it will save you battery, if you want data all the time then you should check this out and check the box that says always enable mobile data

nyry,

Thanks for the reminder -- I went and checked, and it was in fact checked.

However, what is very strange is that it said "Connection failed" in the little line beneath the main section.

I'll have to follow up and see if it keeps doing that every time my network goes out.

Thanks!

i have a similar problem I cant reslove. When the TB is in sleep/locked mode I do get text notifications, but not email. Only time I get email notifications is when I have the email opened. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the same issue as the OP. If my phone is on standby for a while and I turn it on, I see just signal bars but no 1x or 3g, I keep my phone in CDMA Auto PRL for 95% of the time. I thought maybe the first few times I noticed it, it was a fluke, but seeing as OP has the same issue I feel I should chime in.

After some extended testing:

1) No Juice Defender.
2) I tried the eHRPD -> Rev. A modem fix and it does NOT address the problem.
3) I enabled WiFi on the company network, so it's on WiFi 100% of the time. STILL no updates, which is VERY strange. In fact, occasionally, after several hours sleeping, the device refuses to get data over WiFi until I toggle WiFi on/off.
4) With WiFi off, I moved it closer to the window so has at least 2 bars of 1xRTT, and sometimes 2 bars of 3G at all times. No updates.

I am still losing ALL my email, SMS, and Google Voice notifications about 3-5 minutes after the phone goes into idle/sleep mode, and it only picks them up again after I wake it.

Weird.

I have noticed this sometimes to. My signal is pretty crappy at work but it happens even when Im out and have good signal.

Im doing a reset tonight so we shall see.

I also have the same problem and its very annoying... I also noticed that it said "Connection Failed". I unchecked it and rechecked it again then it connected just fine. But the problem still stays, it keeps happening.

Not sure if I'm having the exact same problem, but here is mine...

My data seems to stop working randomly for no apparent reason. It happens on 4G and also today when I was locked into 3G mode. What I find is my background data setting under accounts and sync is unchecked, apparently on its own. I can't figure out why that setting turns itself off...
