Thunderbolt Battery Complaints + Tips/Tricks

Anyone else get the extended battery?

I got mine for $25 at Verizon when I bought my phones , I really think that's the way to go ...only 25 bucks to double the battery life
But how much bigger does the extended battery make the phone?

I just can't use the extended battery. The bulge is a deal breaker for me. I'll use the 1600(although that irks me since my incredible had a 1750mah). Maybe HTC should make their own batteries or something.

So far I'm at 75% with 4 hours of moderate use. Wifi has been on the whole time, browsed through the threads for a while, took some pictures, few sms texts, few phone calls. Not too bad so far. Going to need a few more days of charging and using the phone to see how everything goes.

Can't wait for a root method to come out. The guys over at Unrevoked are working on it. Once I can get all the Verizon bloat off the phone, a better rom, undervolt/underclock the cpu and with the Seido 1600 battery.... everything should add up nice.

Is anybody having any issues with location? i'm currently in indiana for work but my phone network says im in san francisco... WTF??? I turned it off and on pulled out the battery and it still has the wrong location. The only time it works is if i turn off automatic time update. I'm confused...

funny you say this. i was having issues with that too. it was saying i was in Laduna ??? i think it was?? some place off the coast of S. Africa. i duno i reset my phone thinking it would fix itself but i ended up losing all the apps and watnot i had got the day before. not to mention the girl's number i had gotten from the bar last night. FML

ok so im pretty much a noob with android. the thunderbolt is my first android device so im still getting used to the transition from a bb curve. but there is something thats been bothering my this whole time. the home screen under the time doesnt show the weather of my current locatuion. how do i get it to show.?

Agreed. I honestly am not having the plaguing battery issues that most people seem to be reporting. Maybe this is a case of only those who are having a poor experience chiming.

First of all, I do not like to jump to conclusions about battery performance since there are many variables involved. Data coverage, apps installed/used, screen settings (brightness)... the list goes on. One person may call "moderate" use something completely different than the next person.

Secondly, I have only had the device for a bit over one day now so it is extremely hard to gauge normal daily performance when most users have only had the device for 24 -36 hours.

I am with you though!! Once root methods become available we will be able to take proactive measures to increase battery performance :)

when i went to sleep my HTC TB was at 80% wheni woke up 6 hours later it was DEAD.........
That's the same thing that happened to me. I'm in a 4G area, so I'm blaming it on that.
Consider this, my work area only gets 3G, and within that 8.5 hours of time with me not charging the TB, I only lost maybe 30% of battery.

Come on Google, give us an option to turn off 4G for situations such as this!

Exactly!

How can anyone with this phone have any idea of how normal use effects the battery, the phone has only been out for 24 hours? I haven't kept my hands off of mine. It you're using ANY smart phone heavily, the battery will be gone in a matter of hours. Carry an extra battery.

If HTC would have used a larger battery, you same people would complain about size. A little prospective: The battery in this phone is less than 1 cubic inch in size.

I live and work in a seemingly strong LTE areas of town. Having fully charged over night, the battery just went 6 hours and 17 minutes before giving me the 15% warning and going into a low power state.

In those 6 hours I have spent about two and a half hours reading forums, playing Angry Birds, or sending text messages to my wife with the screen on. With the screen off I have spent about 30 minutes streaming Pandora via Bluetooth in my car, on the phone for 45 minutes, and otherwise leave it idle.

Screen is set to full brightness, sync is on, wifi off, bluetooth only on when in use, and live apps running on each of the the desktop panes. The power useage feature indicated that the screen took 60% of the battery life on its own, and that the couple of handful of items also on the list averaged less than 6% each. Not so sure LTE is is our culprit here, perhaps hit is the giant screen. I will try turning the brightness done a notch using the widget and see how it fairs the next couple of days. With lite use, I can see it lasting all day with stats like that. But then again, what is the point of a smartphone you can't use?

Indeed this isn't fantastic battery life as my Pre could go all day before finally getting home with about 20% life left. I do have a charger for my desk, in the car, and of course at home so keeping the battery level up isn't too big of a concern for me most of the time. The only time it will be a concern is when I go hunting and only have a generator running for a couple of hours each day.

I am not complaining about it at all here, just adding my observation to the fodder.

I've found that my battery has been doing much better today. Guess it was true that it does better after a couple of charge cycles. I don't live in a LTE area so it isn't draining that fast but I could see how this will last all day for me.

can you say 2 hours... with nothing running.. if you were lucky. power management is one of the last things tweaked and its about as massaged as it can get on this device. Battery should have been at least 1700-1800 mah unit..

I'm not sure why they shoved a 1400mAh in there when they probably could have easily put a slightly larger battery in.. and the extended batteries that they are offering are huge... maybe too big.

My screen brightness is down to almost 0%, well the lowest it van go. My phone still says the display is taking 74% of the battery. I've had my phone off the charger for about 3 hours and ya down to 67%. I've been browsing forms, and using hotspot, and just browsing my phone, by not all the time its been off the plug.

When the Droid 2 global was released, wasn't the battery life just horrid? Buy Motorola released an.update.to fix this, right? Maybe HTC will do this soon hopefully.

How are you guys doing after many charge cycles??
I've only charged my phone once.....

HTC Needs to get a FREAKIN' CLUE! Quit making awesome phones with tiny batteries!!! This phone should have at LEAST a 1750 mah stock battery....

Reading this thread has made me glad that I didn't hold out for the TB. While I LOVE Android, I have left the platform to an iPhone 4 until these handset manufacturers can get their $#it together. The iphone 4 battery life is right on par with what I was getting on my Evo with a 3500 mah ext. battery.... that is pretty sad. Since I refuse to carry extra batteries or be tied to a charger all day, I was left with very few options. Android phones need better battery life, and they will be on top of the world...

One of these handset makers needs to build a new Android phone that has a huge battery that lasts for days and users will worship them (even if this means a thicker phone)... quit making your customers carry extra batteries and purchase ugly extended battery/door combos so they can enjoy their phone. Hopefully by the time I am able to upgrade my phone, someone will have stepped up to the plate and solved this battery problem...

Power Management

I see alot of folks complaining about how their new Thunderbolt dies after a few hours. I suspect they never bothered to plug them in after purchase. Typically, you should let the battery die a few times, then get a full recharge. You'll get better life.

People, this is not your "run of the mill" phone. It's not Nokia, Samsung, or LG. Heck, it's not even an iPhone. What you hold in your hands, is, in other words, a computer. You may not realize it, but in essence, it is. It has power which you yet don't realize. And with it, comes a price. Battery life.

If you listen to the folks on the forum, you'll learn how to extend the life of the battery. Although I don't own a Thunderbolt (am waiting for Pyramid), I am on my second Android, currently a Desire. I can tell you, that with proper management, you can get at least 31hrs. If you keep WiFI, Gps, and listen to music all day, be prepared to recharge. It's a fact of life.

On a normal day, with "normal" usage, I usually get 19hrs. Not bad for an Android. I keep a USB cable with me when I am on the job. I learn to plug it in at night. As a matter of fact, right now, it's at 49% after 14hrs.

As with USB charging, the computer you plug it into, has a bearing on if it charges or not. My Gateway lapcow at home does just fine. My work computers, well, they keep it at the same level. Their USB just does not have the balls to charge it. This will happen to a lot of people, so don't compare it to "older" phones that you used to charge on older computers.

As with a lot of Andriod "veterans", we know how to deal with this. It's not unusual. Listen to what the "old folks" have to say, and relax. It's all about power management".

Or you could go to the iPhone (which I understand now you can't even change the battery without taking it to a service center)

Not everyone will have the same experience with battery life. Every user Is going to have different settings that will affect how the phone uses battery consumption. Things like screen brightness, how often widgets/apps update their info, gps, WiFi, Bluetooth, network coverage, browser usage, phone calls/messages, etc.

You can look through the Thunderbolt F&Q thread for tips on how to save battery life.
You can also post your reviews... including battery life in the Thunderbolt First Impressions thread...... Or just start a battery life thread but remember to list what options you are running so we can see what's doing what.

In your settings under..About phone..Battery..Battery usage will display in percentage what's using the battery. One of the biggest drains will always be the display... So turn down your screen brightness to a reasonable amount.
I will be updating the F&Q over the next few days with some more user friendly information.

awesome! I didn't know it had that feature. I just checked mine and after having the TB plugged in all night it shows:

5h 3m 25s since unplugged

Display 67%
Android System 17%
Cell standby 7%
Phone idle 5%
Android live wallpapers 2%
com.htc.launcher 2%

I have 8 bars left on my battery so I guess thats good right?

my wife's phone TB however purchased together is down to one bar she tells me. I told her I'll have to check her settings later. she's not changed anything so I wonder if she has a bad battery?

You're right. I would love for them to develop a battery that would last for days, heck, even weeks. Like on the old seimens phone. Man, I remember how it lasted for a week. Phone calls and sms. Black and white screen.

But I fear, with todays phones, I would have to have a couple of mules to carry the battery to have it last a week...
