Thunderbolt Battery Complaints + Tips/Tricks

What do I have to do to turn off Blockbuster or just get rid of that pre-installed app? I use Netflix, anyway.

Thanks.

To delete the Blockbuster app (and the other bloatware that Verizon put on the phone), your phone has to be rooted. There's a setting in the BB app to turn off the automatic updates of the movie listings. That should help improve battery life.

I had the opportunity to test my phone on a trip to Mexico. I turned off the cellular service and had it in airplane mode for a week. All I used was the wifi to connect, browse, google maps and skype. I also took pictures, video and more. I would say it was moderate to heavy use every day. I started each day with a fully charged phone and ended the evening with at least 70%. That blew me away. Now that I'm back, I started using my normal 4G service. I loose about 20% an hour on the battery. Today, with a fully charged battery at 6:30am, I turned off 4G and am only using 3G service. It's only 2pm and I'm at 63%. That's 7 hours and 37% loss! 4G would be great if our phone could last longer than 5 hours.

well i turned on my wifi and nothing else with the brightness is set at is 25%. also i used airplane mode when i sleep and im at 32 hours and still have 50% battery left. oh and my phone is not rooted

This is a general comment regarding the battery use on the TB.

A friend of mine purchased the TB on the first day it became available. He too, like many people, was totally disgusted with the battery life of this phone. especially coming from BB Storm where he consistently had 2+ days of battery life.

After the outage a few weeks ago, he decided that he would force the phone into 1XEV mode and enable 4G if and when he needed to access the web. He receives AND sends around 40 to 50 e-mails and texts on a daily basis. Answering e-mails and texts does not require 4G power. He turns on 4G about 3 to 4 times a day for a few minutes and then switches back to 1XEV. The other thing he does is, as soon as he is finished with whatever he's doing, he kills any background processes and puts his phone in sleep/wait/standby (whatever you call it.)

His phone is now lasting 2 full days on one charge with the original battery. He also thinks that he could go an extra day, but rather not since he uses it for business.

Seeing that he gets such great performance this way, why isn't the phone programmed in such a way that as soon as it goes in standby mode it automatically shuts down processes that are not necessary and to drop the signal to the bare minimum. You don't need 4G service when your sleeping.
Options should be given to the user to control what happens to processes and signals when going on standby mode.

thats all well and good norman but we shouldnt have to do all those things for the money we pay for these phones

Emails and text are one thing...
I don't even like to browse the web or download on 3G, let alone 1x.

Tell him to flash a good ROM and kernal and remove the bloat ware/get an extended battery.
Then he can leave it on Wifi/LTE and get 2 days out of it as well.

I've been experimenting with dark verses light wallpapers and have details at this android central post in the wallpaper section for those interested. Basically, though i'm still experimenting, i'm seeing approximately a 10% increase in battery life by simply switching to the light wallpaper verses black with same theme (our very own android central loyd caracher : ) I've included both wallpapers in the original post.

Cheers,
Thom

This is all good tips but... besides you tech nerds, including myself, no one cares about rooting a damned phone or having to reprogram the damned thing.

When you buy a car, do you spend weeks or even months to determine what is the proper gas mixtures going in to the engine and at what PSI you should have your tires at and whether you should re-program the chips because you don't like how their configured? Get real!

The average user wants to buy a phone that has many features and also expects to be able to use the phone as is without having to do that crap! Myself included!

I do plenty of this crap with my computers, the last thing that I want to do is tink around with my phone especially when I use it for business.

All I stated earlier is what my friend has done. These steps to saving the battery should have been incorporated into the phone's OS.

I'll reiterate what I've said in previous posts,

HTC and Verizon are guilty of NOT providing what they are promising! They have done a crappy job at delivering what people expected.

I have never knocked the phone! I believe that this is one of the best phones on the market, but, the software configuration, designed by both Verizon and HTC sucks.

A PHONE, regardless of features added to the handset, should have a reasonable amount of life. 6, 8 12 is NOT a reasonable amount of life.

Features that are not in use should NOT be ON to waste the battery.

Do you leave your car running in the driveway when you get home from work? NO! Absolutely not! Does that mean that your car is completely OFF? NO absolutely not! You have computer chips monitoring your vehicle waiting for an event to occur. This is how it was designed! Properly!

Putting the onus on the consumer to optimize the phone is shameful! Especially when a large percentage of buyers have absolutely no clue as to how an OS works. All they care about is that the phone works!

Shame on you Nerds for thinking that you are the majority!

Open your eyes, take your rosy sunglasses off, smell the coffee and get a reality check. You are only a fraction of a small percent of user that want to root a phone and install new ROMs.

Nerds? I'm a 6'4" 220lb ex-jock, and I'll be the first to say you're way off base with that assessment.

Many people like myself enjoy this sort of thing, you could call it a hobby of sorts. Now everyone knows that this phone comes preloaded with crap, and isn't close to being fully optimized out of the box. There's no excuse for HTC and Verizon for this, but instead of whining about it we actually do something about it!

Now if you don't want to spend a couple hours out of your time to root, and get rid of the crap that comes preinstalled that's on you my friend. There's a reason why these devices are called smart phones. You have to put some time and effort in learning and understanding the process of how everything works, that way if you run into problems you know how to deal with them instead of complain and cry about it.

If you're a business user you should get a phone that caters to business people, and get a blackberry. Leave the androids for the 'nerds' Or you can always get an iphone, I hear they got that 10-18 age range/trendy crowd market cornered.

I write software for a living and am no where near the ages of 10-18. My kids are older than that!

RIM is focused on their toy Playbook which in my opinion have lost focus on their business customers. The new deal that they just signed with Microsoft' bing, again my own opinion, spells disaster long term.

I simply stated what my Friend did to get 2+ days out of his battery. The response to that was to Root the phone and install a custom ROM. Installing a custom ROM is NOT as solution for the majority of people.

I am with you concerning the CRAP loaded on the device, however, that CRAP is not what drains the majority of the power. It's the 4G and the software/application controlling the communication.

In early 90's cell/brick phones had batteries that lasted 8 to maybe 10 hours. In the 2000 cell phones reached a peek where the batteries lasted 7-10 days and some even went longer than that. Today, cell phone, like the TB can't even last 6 hours stock.

Why should you, me or anyone have to spend days and weeks to eek out a few hours of battery life when the onus should be on Verizon and HTC (in this case).

Why are people so damned complacent? By accepting crap from these company and following behind them like little puppies and cleaning up their mess, gives them a Carte Blanche to continue giving us crap!

RIM is a failing company I'll agree with you on that, and the preloaded bloat isn't the main factor concerning battery life. But anyone with half a brain had to know coming in that a large screen, 1400mah battery combined with a new 4G network was going to result in below average battery life.

These companies have a good hold on their profit margins, and they will try to cut corners in any way they can to meet their goals. That's just the nature of the game. There is no perfect device, and there will never be one.

I'm just grateful that we have the developers who make it able for some of us to enjoy the phone to it's fullest potential. I don't think that it should be that way, but what are you going to do?

You write software for a living and you think we are nerds? Really?
They are called smart phones for a reason...the end user has to be smart enough to use them.
Otherwise...they make iPhones.
This phone is NOT a great business phone. And I too, own this as my work phone, with exchange via Active Sync. If you are primarily using it for that many emails, texting and phone calls....please buy a blackberry. I know the Playbook is horrible...any tablet based PC with a mail, calendar or contact app should be put out to pasture. That's just dumb.

Based on what you listed a BB is a better choice for you.

I purchased this phone, for work and out of my own pocket because of it's great features...email and texting was not at the top of my list.
Speed, screen size, simultaneous voice and data, rich web browsing, LTE network, WiFi Hotspot capacity, Video Chat, Google Maps and Navigation...
All these reasons are why I bought the phone... Yes, I do email, calendar and contacts on it.
NO...it is no where as good as a BB for those specific things. Even with Touchdown, K9, DroidMail, Enhanced Email or other aftermarket mail apps.

I ran auto centers for years, starting at the bottom and working my way to management. I fell into a tech job because of how efficient I was on point of sale systems.
So please don't lecture me on how cars work, what people do with them, etc., I'm 110% certain I have a greater grasp of that concept than you ever will.

You came to a tech forum, you got a tech answer. Look at either the signatures and details of the members posting in these forums. Many will be rooted and using different ROMs. Many do that, myself included, to not only remove bloatware and get better battery life, but to customize the phone and make it theirs. So speaking of cars...how many people tint windows, change their stereo, put graphics, exhaust, chips, etc.. on their cars to make it their own AND get more performance? (If you're gonna use a car analogy....do better next time)

So before you go spouting off on users you don't know about technology that might be a little too advanced for you, maybe you should get a cup of coffee, smell the flowers and get a reality check.

Or buy some fruit more to your liking, in a berry or apple flavored variety.

**Edit, please let me clarify the email comment. Email working correctly (sync, receiving, sending) is critical. And it does that fine... actual program capabilities and flow are not on the top of the list... Just to clarify**

I'm not a nerd, nor am I a jock just your everyday joe smo'
I'm loving it this phone
wish I had more time to become an expert on smart phones but i don't so i rely on webistes like this to teach me.
Battery life might suck but this is the phone i bought
I use it until the yellow light comes on and then I charge it
:)

I'd suggest looking at Juice Defender in the Market to help with battery life. Had it on my DX and now on my TB, seems to give extended life on single charge.

Just rooted and put a new ROM on my TB. We'll see how battery life is. Supposedly, rooting is supposed to help with some battery issues since it removed a lot of the bloatware, but who knows. We'll find out, I suppose.

Depending on the ROM you loaded, the kernel may support undervolting, which helps with battery life. You can also separately load a compatible kernel that has undervolting. Good luck.

I'll go out on a limb and say that "bloatware" is a myth or certainly would seem like it. Check your battery useage, you should see all the apps that are using your batteries power. I checked mine and see nothing considered bloatware - anything bloatware apps would show up here if they were using any power. Most of the bloat are just links to install the apps.

The apps that are bloatware are pre-installed by Verizon and would be part of the Android System listed in the Battery Use. If you want to see exactly what is running.. go into Manage Application and look under Running.

Battery is a joke & you think with all the advances in battery technology HTC would have released the Thunderbolt with a 2700MaH the same size as a 1400, 1500, 1700 battery.
