Thunderbolt GPS Navigation Issue??

So my question is, do we only need to do this Menu/Tools/Reset procedure once? Or every single time prior to starting up Google Navigation?? Thanks, Casey

Thanks for the info. I too downloaded this app just now. Earlier today, I too had the same issue using Navigation (by Google) whereby it took awhile with the message reading Searching For GPS, or something similar. I then exited out of Google's Navigation, and then started up Verizon Navigation, and after several moments the Verizon GPS app worked. This may be the only reason I continue to keep paying $9.99 a month for the Verizon Navigation app. Hopefully, the Google Navigation app will now work properly after installing the GPS Status app, otherwise I will most likely keep the Verizon Navigation app.

Drop the VZW app immediately and just do what was said earlier. Yet to see someone saying that fix didn't work for them and worst case is every once in awhile you may have to pop back into the GPS Status app to repeat the process.

No need to be paying $10 a month for something you've got for free already.

Oh my god I love the forums. Thanks so much for this tip. Really fixed my gps issues! I was getting so angry about this, as my old droid was fantastic at finding location and I expected the same functionality in my new device. So relieved to see it working properly!

Mine closes right away when I'm done typing in the destination / address line after I hit enter. What gives? :(

Edit: Found the problem. I just defrosted it from Titanium Backup and now works like a champ. :D

Yea, don't pay for Navigation when its free.

Install GPS Status from the market, then:

Menu -> Tools -> Manage AGPS -> Reset

Menu -> Tools -> Manage AGPS -> Download

Used these instructions from someone in XDA forums and it worked like a charm!

Didn't seem to work for me.

Then I downloaded GPSfix from the market and that worked like a charm. Download hit the button. Wait a minute, fixed.

After reading that Verizon was having network issues I decided to disable Verizon's gps service.
Problem solved! Now my gps locates immediately after opening Google maps!
I left Google's gps service and the standalone service on.

i was having random delays with the GPS about 2 weeks ago also. Sometimes it'd lock right away, others it would take forever. I did what Dr3us posted and it locks in about 3 seconds all the time now. But I have noticed it still doesnt work so great in some buildings no matter what.

Can also try this if rooted:
This is a MOD posted today in IRC(#thunderbolt) today by Ziggy471 that has improved GPS lock for myself and others that have tried it.

Instructions:
With Root Explorer (or similar app) go to /etc/gps.conf

In Root Explorer long press on the file and select open in text editor

Change the first line from: NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org to NTP_SERVER=us.pool.ntp.org

Save changes and reboot

I did it one time a few days ago and GPS still works instantly.

Do this.

Also, don't enable the VZW Location services. Once I did that is when I started having problems. Standalone and Google are fine.

I was going 30 minutes without GPS lock under clear skies before giving up in frustration. I tried the GPS Status fix and immediately got a GPS lock. Thanks.

I've been watching GPS on the TB since I got it and it's been pretty awful compared to my old dINC. I've have had GPS Status since my dinc and have noticed that even though it's tracking 2-10 satellites it still will not get a fix at some times. You only need 2 satellites to get a fix and it has 9 sometimes and still has no fix.

It's defnitely a bug in software possibly combined with a weak GPS receiver.

How many people having problems with GPS lock are using an extended battery?

I just stumbled across this on the HTC forums -- there's a suggestion that the extended battery cover is missing a connection between the two leads that produces poor GPS and Networking performance.

Defect in extended battery cover - HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon) - Android Forums - HTC Community

I know it takes me a good 5-10 minutes to get a GPS lock in open sky, and I have the extended battery cover.

I know you shouldn't HAVE TO but do the 2 above fixes and you will not have any problems.

I just read the entire thread (up to this point) at the link you posted. AFAIC, this is all hogwash. I put both covers in front of me, with a magnifying glass, and I believe there is no problem whatsoever.

Here's a significant snippet from the above linked thread.

--------------
The phone does not fail to completely work, as in the situation where the cover is disconnected.
I called Walter and he confirmed that his expectation is that there is a flaw. However, that number is at PCDPhones, which, as far as I can tell, is not HTC Engineering or R&D, or, for that matter, at all affiliated with HTC. Also, he could not confirm to me WHY the connection should be bridged.
Therefore, because (a) there is no empirical evidence that the stock cover is demonstrably better than the extended battery cover; and (b) HTC engineers have not confirmed that the cover was not, in fact, designed to work with or without the bridge, I am still unconvinced that the missing connection is a defect.
--------------

Also, about the contacts in question being "bridged", AFAIC, they are. They simply are not made of one piece of metal (which obviously has continuity), but both of the contacts are connected to the same piece of metal which is the antenna (hence, "bridged" - although, "have continuity" is much better terminology).

Just hogwash I think. 'Course, a lot of people will use this as a presumed reason why a whole plethora of things on the phone are not working right for them, but I don't buy it.

I did a factory reset and did everything stated above. Nothing. I even pulled out my extended battery for the OEM and still nothing.
