been 9 months and have found no reason to Root. Now needed WiFi tether cause easy teather USB is not gonna work with my new Nexus 7 I think its time to ROOT.
Not sure what the down sizes are here but this is what I think I remember... some applications will not work with Root, like netflix which I dont have..Is there any other negatives about root I dont know.
I figure if I brick the phone its only $200 on eBay to get another and in that case I'll fork another $150 on top of $200 and get the S3.
Also I'm not sure If I should put a Rom on it like NilsP business Rom. But if I do I think I should do what people call a nandroid backup on the original ICS so I can go back to stock if I want and do all this before I flash a Rom.
well picked a Saturday to do this so I can take my time and not get stressed out that I'm running out of it. Gonna follow Mr.Smiths guide below. I have all the drivers I need and even got so far last night in almost pasting the token into the HTC dev site. but I held off till today. Let you all wonderful people of AC know how it went or will post questions here if I need your help. Cant trust the other site really anymore for quality grownup help. This is gonna be fun..I figured its focus my attention on rooting or go out and buy some gadget to fiddle with that will cost me like $200 like the NEST thermosat I want LOL!
Well here goes nothing!
I'mm a sccccared!!

Re: Time to finally ROOT !

Alot of questions
1. why do you have to go to the play store and download another Super user when during the amonRa you install one already?
2. and which one should I install from the play store if I really need another one beside the one that was installed with the amonRa?
3. I wanna make a backup of this OS before I install NilsP business how do I do this?

Re: Time to finally ROOT !

I too am seriously considering rooting my Rezound, mainly because I'd like to be able to use Google Now with ICS. Thanks for the tip about Netflix - I stream heavily and would not want to give up Netflix/HBO Go/Xfinity Player. Does anybody know if there is a way to have Netflix working with root (or a particular ROM?) I also just read something about Netflix HD (I'm assuming it's higher quality video or tablet-optimized???) being available for rooted devices. I am completely new to rooting, so sorry if this is a totally obvious question.

Re: Time to finally ROOT !

I cant get wifi tether working on it! Fuddgee!!!! I downloaded
https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...LmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ&token=RUxT3fZn..
and it starts with errors and none of my computers see it. then when "shutting it down" it just hangs. says in pop up messages that "phone in unknown state" and "is your phone rooted?"
I selected Rezound in device setup, routing fix,

EDIT: found out was never getting root access with SuperUser!
So wifi tether would not work!
found out by research that superuser in the current 3.14/.15 AmonRa does not work well with the latest ICS .12 RUU
So had to download file from this post: http://forums.androidcentral.com/re...peruser-access-after-ics-ruu.html#post2060914
and put it in my Ext Sd card and boot into hboot and select "hboot>recovery> and in armon recovery select "flash zip menu>choose from sdcard" and scroll dow to find file
Alot of people here that rooted have since moved on and thus some rooting material is outdated

Now making a nandroid backup in armon recovery of the stock RUU .12, wifi tether working ICS install to always have if I need it for later.
Also may run this for a while since the install of NilsP business isnt all that clear.
what I understand about installing that ROM is, download rom, copy the boot.img file on to your computer since its the kernel that has to be flashed by itself. then put the Full rom file on the ext_sdcard and boot the phone into recovery and select it using the flash zip menu. after that use the fastboot in the hboot and flash the boot.img.
I have yet to find the commands to flash the kernel
is this right?

make sure you follow what I did when you go to root if you do. I have cut back the overgrowth from the rooting path

I always flash roms in recovery. I also use amon ra. Some roms you don't have to worry about renaming boot. Img. If you flash viperrez 1.0.3 (solid rom) it will instruct you to hboot. Its painless. Another thing to remember about flashing roms, always ALWAYS, delete ph98img.zip after you flash it. You'll run into problems when you try to flash a different kernel later down the road. Im somewhat of a noob when it comes to all this myself. Just passing on what I've learned.

P. S. I can't get wifi tether to work either. Also my main reason for rooting. SMH.

I think you're not getting any reply's to this thread because it's Saturday. I'll try and help if I can. Superuser got updated at some point in time and the market one had a different name..like SuperSU or something like that. I think SuperSU is the one you want.

Where are you currently at in the process?

Looks like you figured out how to make a nandroid...good...it'll probably save your bacon sometime in the future. Knowing how to restore one though is equally important. Get into recover and go to backup/restore. Get through the menus until you see the files with names like 1301100512....bascially a seemingly random string of numbers but they're not random. They're the date and time the backup was made with the time being in Zulu or UTC. I won't go into how to tell time in Zulu but it's important to know which backup is which. You can have more than one backup and you don't want to restore to something you don't want. You can also rename backups using any file explorer or just mount you SD using the computer and find the files under External SD, Nandroid, someother folder, the actual nandroids themselves.

Installing Nils' ROM's are much easier than you think. The Aroma installer is very easy once you start using it...it's pretty intuitive but you are correct in that you would want to make a back up of your current ROM (stock ICS or whatever it is) before you flash something over it. Also make a backup of all your apps with Titanium or whatever app backer upper you choose as flashing the ROM will wipe all of your data.

That brings me to another question, you are wiping all your data right? Sorry to ask such a basic question but neither you post here or the post in the main forum mentioned doing that as part of installing Nils' ROM so I just wanted to check and avoid any problems from the get go.

I'll check back in the morning and see how you're getting on.

I'm unlocked
I have armon recovery installed
I fixed superuser by downloading a previous binary file(see post above)
I got wifi tether working now that superuser allows it
Lastley right now I'm wondering if I really need a custom rom since I have now what I wanted..wifi tether
Thats where I'm at

you are wiping all your data right?
Yeah I will wipe everything before I install NilsP Rom. that was straight forward
I plan on using tomorrow to Install

Question>>If I make a nadroid backup after i install all my apps and get it to where I like the stock rooted ICS RUU will the nadroid backup restore my apps also when I and if I restore?

Thanks Wanda for your down to earth answers

Cool. Sounds like you're all set then. You don't NEED a custom ROM in the sense that you don't NEED a convertible sports car, an old Accord would get you there but the other would be way more fun. Nils slightly themes his ROMs and adds a lot of customizations and tweaks that are fun to use.

The whole day lol? Shouldn't take but an hour. It takes me about an hour from flashing to having every thing put back and tweaked to the way I like it. You can't go wrong with any of Nils' ROMs. I'd recommend any of them. Try the Sense 4.0 one...you'll never want to go back to Sense 3.6. Word of caution, some ROMs are not compatible with certain tethering apps. Can't say which ones cause I don't tether. There are work arounds though.

Question>>If I make a nadroid backup after i install all my apps and get it to where I like the stock rooted ICS RUU will the nadroid backup restore my apps also when I and if I restore?

Exactly. A nandroid is like a complete system snapshot. It will restore everything back to the way it was including where you are in games and stuff like that. Get your system set up then make the nandroid backup. If your gonna change to a new rom you need to also backup your apps with titanium. It makes restoring them so much easier and that way you also don't loose the data in them by having to redownload every app.

Good luck. Hit us up with any other questions you may have.

Is it better to remove the other roms from your phone when you go to a new rom or does it matter?

You mean from a nandroid perspective? I usually keep at least one or two on there just in case my current one bites the dust. They're pretty big files so I try not to have more than two. The others i transfer to my laptop for safe keeping just in case but only of its a ROM I really like and think I'll use again in the future.

Probably wouldn't hurt to keep your base stock ICS on there or on the laptop just in case you need to go back. If you do joust do a restore of it and your back.

As I said earlier, you can rename them just don't use any spaces in the name. So if the backup was named 120910072012 (1209 being the time in Zulu, the rest being the date. I might have it backward, date first then the time in Z but you get the idea) I usually add venom103. So the full name is 120910072012venom103. The 103 after venom is the version of the venom rom. Make sense?

Forgot to mention that if your S-On, when you restore from one ROM to another, you'll have to reflash the kernel for that ROM..unless they used the same kernel.

Example, you're stock ICS then flash an AOSP ROM and it's associated kernel. You decide you don't like AOSP and want to restore your nandroid. You'll have to reflash either the PH98IMG file after you restore before you boot into the ROM, or you'll have to push the boot.img file via ADB. Another way to get the kernel back is to do a clean flash of the ROM you're going to restore, after it's flashed and kernel installed, boot into the ROM, skip the set up, go back to recovery and then restore your nandroid.

This sort of silliness is why I went S-Off...makes hopping from ROM to ROM soooo much easier.

sorry I didn't respond earlier but my phone was locked up and I was almost in a panic but somehow I made it back to 1.0.3. Now if I can just remember all the command prompts to install the video fix kernel ,I will be good to go

If you can find it as a P98IMG file it's a lot easier.

Or down a few beers to calm the nerves and go S-Off. It's really not that hard. I did it with my two 4 year olds running around and peppering me with 1000 questions.

I've heard that superuser doesn't work with ics so I used supersu and had no problems first time through. This was my first root also.
