[TIPS] Nookie Froyo tips & Work-arounds

Yeah, some apps are still going to be missing even after the fingerprint change. I'm not aware of another change to give full apps at this point.

I'll update OP to make this clearer.
OK - thanks for the update. And thanks for all you have contributed to this forum! Do you think the issue has to do with the way the Market & devs classify the apps for different versions of Android? I may try to reinstall the new Market again and go through the fingerprint change/cache clearing and see if that helps. Hopefully someone smarter than I can come up with an answer. The rooted NookColor is a great little tab to play with.

I did some searching around fount his step. After changing fingerprint and clearing market cache then i did this Settings -> Manage Applications -> All -> Google Services Framework
Clear data then Force Stop
Then rebooted and ADW was there now so i think that did it.

Yeah, that helps. Also would've helped if I'd put that in there. :P Updated OP - thanks.

Yeah, your device's fingerprint will determine what apps you see in the market. That way, if a developer has an app that requires Froyo or higher, for example, someone who's on Eclair might not see it in the Market. It can work the same for apps that require GPS capabilities, etc. It tries to minimize people seeing apps they can't even use.

I noticed Weatherbug doesn't show up in my apps. Is that due to it being location sensitive? I know the Nook doesn't have GPS, but can it use the WiFi to get an approximate location? Or is Weatherbug (and other such apps) just not going to work?

Weatherbug shows up for me. Try the steps from #2 in the OP again and see if it shows.

Some guys have all the luck... Actually, it seemed like Weatherbug/GPS shouldn't be an issue as it can be set for a specific location. Some of the other missing apps seem a little strange, too: Zeam, Chase Banking, Earthquake!, and several other seemingly benign apps don't show up either. I figured if I reinstalled the Market and then went back through everything, it might work. I know when I edited the code I triple checked before saving. And I cleared both sets of caches - both the one you mentioned and the other one I found on xda. The one thing I may have done (that you specifically said not to do) was I may have cleared the data in the market. Could that have caused my current problems?

Anyway thanks for the help and at least I have something to do tomorrow... :'(

Speaking of this...my notification bar is still small after doing this.

He was talking about removing the cell service icon, which has nothing to do with the size of your status bar. LCD Density is what you want to change if you want your status bar (and everything else) to grow.

Services.jar link appears to be broken.

thanks Andy

19. How do I get rid of the empty cell bars at the top of the screen?

Download the following two files:

android.policy.jar

services.jar

Then simply use Root Explorer to replace the two files of the same name in system/framework (be sure to set as r-w first).

Reboot, and you'll no longer be constantly reminded that froyo was designed for cell phones!

2. Many apps aren't showing up for me in the Market! WHAT DO I DO????

While this still won't show ALL apps, doing the following will certainly help you to find MORE apps in the Market:

Open Root Explorer, navigate to system/, mount as r-w, and open build.prop in a text editor. Find the line that starts with ro.build.fingerprint= and change it to the following:

ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.1-update1/ESE81/29593:user/release-keys

Now from your homescreen, hit Menu>settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All, and find Market. Select clear cache, and then force stop. Then, still under All, find Google Services Framework, and hit wipe data, and then force stop. Reboot, and many more apps should show up!

Do I have to be rooted to use Root Explorer? How do I give it Root Access?

Nookie froyo is rooted by default. The root state of your stock ROM (if you're running nookie from SD) should have no effect on this.

When you open Root Explorer, it should give you the option to grant it SuperUser permissions or not. If you accidentally denied it, open the SuperUser app and change it.

If you posted in the wrong thread and are asking about the stock ROM, then yes, you'll have to be rooted.

Thanks Will, I know you gave directions on how to increase the apps in the market but I can't figure it out in Root Explorer. Any advice?

We'd have to know more about the problems you're having. Give us more detail and we'll do our best.

OK...

When I get into Root Explorer where do I find system/?

How do I open build.prop in a text editor? Do I need an additional app for that?

The root directory (/) that you're in when you open the app has a folder called system. Open that, hit the "set system as r-w" button up top, long press on build.prop, select open in text editor, make the changes, hit menu> save & exit. Then follow the rest of the directions.

Ok I got into the system folder, but it will not let me set it as rw. Then when I go to "build.prop" select open in text editor, says its read-only...

There are now from the OP installing froyo on SD card, several methods to update the market. I installed NF 0.6.7 from 2/92011 and the system now seems stable without the browser FC--I reinstalled the image+apps on the SD-. Can someone kindly point me to the most uptodate method/download link to update the market? Any help with how to install this much appreciated as I'm surprised I got this far.

about help....I've been following the exchange between jrid and Will in the tips thread. I'm embarassed but need to ask how one gets into root explorer to make changes to update market or install the adobe flash apk as recommended. Is there an app on the NF on the device or is this a cmd I open in windows under the platform-tools folder using adb? Let me know if there is a book for dummies about these basic cmds. Running v0.6.7 on NC firmware 1.1 for 2 days. tks!
