You are correct. I just did this for a friend recently. I would advise the OP to do it online .

I did mine online (switched to the new Unlimited). One line was still under contract.

Switching

I have 4 lines with verizon. I want to start switching to another carrier. The first line I want to switch is mine and I'm the owner of the account. If I port this number over to another carrier, will it shut down my other 3 lines? If it does, can I first change the ownership to a different number?

I would say yes to the first, don't know on the second. May be up to the carrier you want to change to? Some will transfer numbers some won't.
