TMO's reaction to Verizon's new UDP: two ONE lines for $100

In response to Verizon's new UDP announcement:

TMO had to institute Binge On and then its successor ONE plan w/ non-optional 480p because their network is getting awfully congested in a lot of places. Now they're upping it to "HD" video with no announced immediate network upgrades? Good luck with that. Maybe they'll try to mitigate with 720p instead of Verizon's 1080p, and keeping a toggle a la Binge On/HD day passes, hoping the customer forgets/runs into issues/can't find it/can't turn it on.

But yay for price wars.

I haven't but it sounded like you either had facts I didn't (as in HD was limited to 720) or ranting -- hence why I asked. I am able to turn BingeOn off and I can do 720/1080/whatever with no limitation so I was confused on your sources.

You are on a grandfathered plan. The new ONE plans--where TMO plans to include "HD" for free will be base plans offered to new customers going forward, and current ONE customers will be converted to it as well. Verizon has made it clear that video will be 1080p and beyond. Neither Legere in his tweets nor TMO in their press release has specified a bit rate, so it's fair to assume it can be 720p--which qualifies as HD. You are free to assume a higher bit rate, but keep in mind that goes against what TMO's ONE plan as of today mandates--free 480p, paid HD.

Oh it does say the bit rate btw (always read the fine print).

It's in the fine print on the plans page. Always read the fine print on anything if you want to know the truth. On Friday when the plan changes we can check again to see if that verbiage stays.. if it doesn't then it changed.

What point? This is about it changing to being free (on Friday) and you assuming the video quality. Wait till the fine print comes out and see if it has some "720p limitation" -- you're just assuming at the moment .

Either way I am done with this convo till it changes on Friday to have HD included in the base T-Mobile ONE Plan -- It seems you want to rant which you're free to do but going off opinions as facts when the plan hasn't even changed isn't worth the discussion since we can't see the fine print until it changes over to see if it is native or 720P limitations. I personally don't go off the big letters in press releases since the fine print is the true 100% story not the "fluff" to make stuff sound good .

Nice. Last week I cancelled my 4 lines/120 deal and went prepaid for 100 minutes/5GB for $30.

This might get me to go back to postpaid, get two lines for $100, unlimited.

Why are you making such a big deal about this? The vast majority of customers that had used Binge On previously, and the new One plan loved it... zero complaints. To be honest, I have a grandfathered UDP plan that didn't need BO in any way shape or form but I had turn it on so I could tether my kids' voracious Youtube habit while we were out and about and on road trips, etc... I used to toggle it on and off, which was easy to do. But at one point I just stopped because 480P video on a 5.7" screen works just fine.

But that's moot now that T-Mobile eliminated that.... so you have to turn it on once a month, meh... I think most people have zero preference either way and they'll just say to heck with it and leave it on (which is probably what T-Mobile would prefer anyhow).

I was under the impression that Verizon Unlimited was HD Video capped at 720p. Not 1080p and "beyond". And I as yet cant find any mention of Tmobile Unlimited HD video capped at any bitrate (with new rules at least). Though to be honest, even if they cap it at 720p, thats pretty good and good enough for me. Aside from youtube, max video most things stream at for me is 720p (netflix only does HD video on a few approved devices, my V10 isnt on that list)

Can you stream HD video? Yes. It doesn't appear to be capped at 720p, either — Verizon says it doesn't "manipulate the data" it sends in any way.

Verizon reached out to point out that even though their press release states “HD” video streaming is included, that this isn’t a throttle to 720p. In fact, they specifically said that they deliver across the network “whatever the content provider gives” them and that there is no manipulation to the data.

Looks like they've updated it to only turning it on once. They also clarified that it will be w/e the video is (like Verizon).

Yeah.... they are using the same 'opt-in' model that they had for the unlimited people when Binge-On first hit. Hoping that most people won't care either way and will leave it it at 480... and the people who do insist on full res can toggle it easy enough.

So by daily toggle T-Mobile is saying you need to toggle it each day? I guess it's not a big deal but I feel like it would get annoying if I was forced to toggle my data daily to get HD quality video.
