To keep or not to keep? Epic 4G

I want to address the people who think Froyo is the end of all ends.

I had that thought, played around with my phone enough by reading these forums.
I am running rooted DK28 which has 2.5 to 3.0 Touchwiz - don't know, don't care.
It has flash for browser and can rearrange dock so everything looks nicer. But other than that, it is no big deal, not worth bashing, we are just crying that we didn't get something promised and expected. I don't care for Samsung and Sprint's lack of communication, but this is not the end all to anything. Remember it is phone and something will always be newer and shinier, that's why we upgrade.

So my advice is read the top of these Epic Forums with Stickies. Until you are comfortable, XDA is excellent, but they are techies. So if you want change, read about DK28, how to use Odin to get there, and how to unbrick if you have problems. Then use One Click Root - I did all of this to have Wireless Tether but haven't even used it.

The hardest part about Odin is finding the right files to download - Samsung drivers were the biggest problem - use the 32 bit even if you have 64 bit computer. Download Odin, read about it. Download DK28 as well as DK18 while you are at it.

Once you can open Odin, you can put 2.2 on your phone in about 3.5 minutes, it is that easy, and it is rooted. If you have problems, read about Unbricking or going back to stock which is DK18. Again, open Odin and use the DK18 you downloaded. 3.5 minutes you are back, can even do the OTA if ever released.

The developers here have kept it simple, it took time, but have developed easy,
almost screw up proof ways to do this. Research, use the search button, and if
you ask questions in the right thread, they will answer and unstick you.

And be polite, always use the thanks button, the only reward these helpers, who should be paid by Samsung, get.

DK28 is earth shaking, but my battery is great, GPS works, changed docks and have flash - nothing earthshattering, meaning if you don't have it, no need to return phone either.

Just my 2 cents.

It's awesome that so many folks have done such great work in rooting and making these ROMs available, and I recognize that following their lead is always an option. However, it remains true that Sprint and Samsung have at least implied strongly that Froyo would be available and supported on the Epic, and so speaking for myself here that's what is upsetting about its continued unavailability.

Now, I'm a newbie to the Epic and Android, and so I don't have anywhere near as much room to complain. I still have a week or so to return mine and get something else. So perhaps this post isn't worth much. But I'll say that I still hope that Froyo will come soon to the Epic because I need working GPS and the ability to move apps to the SD card, and I'd like better performance. And I want this to come from Sprint and Samsung as I was promised by the Radio Shack rep when I purchased the phone (yes, I know, he doesn't work for Sprint or Samsung, but he represents them), because I want to know that it will be fully supported moving forward.

That said, the Epic is a great piece of hardware, and I'm enjoying it. I'd just enjoy it that much more with it running Froyo, and I do expect the upgrade to be released soon enough.

I don't get it... The GPS on all 3 of my Epic's have worked fine after changing the settings to cold start. Is there something I'm missing?

If I'm not mistaken, I think the GPS works fine for some uses but not others. I'd love to hear if this is incorrect, that there's a limit to how the system reports the position of 30m, which works fine perhaps for auto navigation but not so much for apps like RunKeeper that require more accurracy.

If there's a step I'm missing to get better than 30m reported accuracy on 2.1 without any kind of hack, then I'd love to be corrected.

I have no complaints with GPS. Until now, everything's worked great. If anything changes, I'll bring it up.

You don't think samsung will release froyo for epic? What makes you think that especially consider test builds of Froyo are already out for the Epic? I'm not sure what technical issues you are talking about but there is nothing i see that couldnt be resolved. The GPS issues seem to be the most common problem but considering some people dont have the problem and others with the problem have fixed it, im pretty sure Samsung can make the corrections in the official release or soon after. My guess is Samsung has already released it to Sprint and now we are just waiting for them to jam all of their crapware, sprintID, and other junk into it.

No I do not. They are just that, test builds. I think they had intentions on releasing 2.2 but will eventually give up citing the features of TW and 2.1 to be sufficient to the customers. Samsung will make no extra money pushing out 2.2, the handsets are sold its time to work on the next product.

Before you say "but this will make people not want to buy Samsung again" let me add that many knew Samsung was horrible at updates yet 10 million bought galaxy phones. Samsung has learned from apple... if it's shiny you can treat your customers like crap and they will still continue to buy.

We as the customer have lost the battle.....until they get control on better upgrades more stricter guidelines...I'm sticking to the following main feauters and using my laptop for anything else this "smart phone" has gotton out of hand...I just need sms/mms talk & gps that's it. Forget the phone os they don't update likethey need to..its a lts a lot of bait n switch going on...I'm thru this is my last phonefor a long time.....
