To Pen or Not To Pen from a Note User

Samsung has been pushing the Note phone line more and more mainstream to the point that there is very little difference between S*Plus and Note. And based on all the info the Note 8 is going to look exactly like S8 Plus with a Pen. Yes, it's going to be 0.1" taller screen, but pls let's get real.

I've been using Note phones for about 5 years now and I am wondering if there is any point in Note series anymore if they are just a S*Plus with a Pen. I almost never use the Pen. In all of 5 years I may have used the pen 20 times. And that's generous.

I have a Note tablet as well that is a workhorse but I never use the pen.

I am not even going to bring the price into discussion even though the Note 8 maybe $200 more than its identical twin S8 Plus.

So, to pen or not to pen?

The pen and the ability to take notes on the screen on the fly is what I miss the most. If my S7E did that, as much as I want it, I'd pass on the N8.

I hope these rumors are false and Samsung puts a decent sized battery in it! What I REALLY want is manufacturers to go back to removable batteries, but I know that's not gonna happen. The Note 8's battery size wouldn't be nearly as important to everyone if it was just removable.

With battery management, it's not important to me at all. I would love a removable, but...

I had a Note 1 and still using a Note 4, both phones were bought for the larger display and the S-pen was a bonus which I don't use that much. Since then we've had the bigger S plus versions and I'm disappointed Samsung have made little effort to separate the S and Note versions about the pen, I've considered an S8+ but I dislike the taller aspect ratio, the curved screen and the fragile build. There's a lot of talk here about the Note being more professional but I don't think it is, in an ideal world I'd like to see a Note with a flat, 16:9 screen and a more industrialised solid build but as it stands the Note 8 looks very similar to the S8+ and if the rumours are true that the battery is smaller, then that's disappointing.

I am waiting and it is increasingly hard with my Note4 now bootlooping now and then. I know I won't be completely happy with the ratio and battery. It comes down to this or Mate10 for me.

Note 7 was an amazing device. It was different from the S7 edge. But the Note 8 will be an S8+ with an S Pen AND a smaller battery. Why would I want a device with a bigger screen (than S8+) with a smaller battery AND pay more for it???

Obvious answer - for the pen. Don't need the pen? Then no, you have no reason to buy it.

"If history is any indication,*the Galaxy Note 8*should offer a bigger screen, improved internal specs and a few new software features when compared to the Galaxy S8+. It will of course have an S Pen, too — something no other phone can match, even from Samsung itself."

Leaks indicate it has dual cameras and a more square design, it's not just an S8 with S Pen. I admit they don't improve the Note over the S released in the same year the way they used to, but it's not identical.

For me, the pen is what drew me to the Note series, it's the main selling point for it in my opinion, there are plenty of large phones but only one Note.

these are all valid questions.
And we don't have to wait too long to find out.

I am on board with getting the Note 8.
Samsung internal name for it is "great" which means they got something going on besides just a S8+ with a pen.
The camera is already very interesting.

If you really don't need the Spen then I would get the S8 Plus and save $$

I got the S8 Plus and quite happy with it. Works nearly perfect!

I would probably want the Note though but the good thing is since I got a new phone I like I can wait a few months and see what kind of sales they have on it and maybe even get the unlocked version.

I won't be paying full price and pre ordering this time though. We already know it's going to carry a hefty price. If I still was using the crappy S7 Edge I'd be pre ordering the Note. This time I can hold off and wait for the deals.

Unless they are thinking of women's hands... I think they are designing phones for women who typically have much smaller hands, since women tend to upgrade/change their phones more often than men.

I think I just hit the target on their marketing objective.

I thought they were thinking more of the European market, or to reduce that down the "home tuff" Samsung market. Considering that on average compared to America people are shorter/ more petite.

Can someone explain to me what advantage there is to having a pen?
I'm not knocking the feature in any way shape or form but I've never had one. I tried a Note 7 in the store but other than a more precise touch, what do I gain? It was great having a stylus back in the day of the Palm Pilot with their shorthand. I recall Nitendo DS made games that were designed to work better with a stylus. Are their apps that work exclusively or better with the pen?

as a female who wears her nails long, I do almost everything with that S pen. I also use S Note to keep a running budget on a hidden home screen. I play games with it and like I said.. everything. Not even sure I remember how to type without it

I'm not concerned about the smaller battery. I'm pretty sure Samsung know what they're doing by putting a smaller battery in. Because I'm a power user I have a fast charger here a charger there a charger everywhere.
