OK I am officially running this brand spanking new Fascinate that Verizon sent me after the other took a nosedive on me. :o Now whether I'm solely to blame for the issues or not is another story... :rolleyes: But at least I have a new phone. Used AppBrain to back up everything and now I'm factory stock plus the Verizon bloat. Oh look here to reference what I'm talking about for those that may be new to this discussion;

http://forum.androidcentral.com/fas...k-no-more-black-rectangle-yay.html#post508664

So here's the plan I'm going to follow and in this order. Each step done before moving to the next. If I leave anything out or am going out of order do let me know please.

1. Get rid of Bing Search using modification in forum here
2. Root the phone using 1 click method
3. Get rid of the bloat ware using the method outlined by Cory in the sticky above
4. Install Rom Manager and Clockworkmod
5. Back up everything w/ Titanium Backup and Appbrain (Can't be too careful here... I learned the hard way)
6. From XDA flash the new radio, ROM, & kernel of DJ05 stock (pretty sure that will kick some of the bloat back on but I'll remove it with File Manager again

And that should cover it for today. I'm gonna stick with that for a bit and make sure that everything is coposetic then I'll might try other things like a different ROM or something. Oh and I'll probably go back to using Launcher Pro or ADW depending on what works best for my needs. One more note... I'd like to keep some of the Touchwiz stuff that is useful no matter what I do. The lock screen in particular has it's benefits. I'm like most and don't care for some of the Crayola color effects but it's not all bad. Suggestions? ;)

1 and 3 (and to some extent 2) are kind of pointless if you plan on doing step 6 any time soon. Imho, you should skip straight to installing clockwork, run a backup, then proceed to 6. Anything you do to the original setup will be forgotten as soon as you are running a new ROM. Titaniumbackup is a nice tool but it's not going to give you the low level rom-switching ability that a backup in clockwork will (at least afaik). Also, why install the bloated DJ05 when you can get straight to a rooted, debloated, deodexed DJ05 or DL09?

if the rumors are true, we might have froyo tomorrow, and I believe you would have to be stock to receive the upgrade, so maybe you might want to wait until tomorrow to do all of this... of course you could just flash back to stock tomorrow if the rumors are true as well, but I'd hate for you to do all of this only to have to go back to stock to get the upgrade tomorrow if it does come out.

You know I honestly didn't consider that some of those steps would be redundant lol. I'm so nervous about screwing up again I wanted to make sure I did it right. I'll keep this in mind and amend my checklist... Done. Thank you.
As for using stock DJ05 I want the benefits of it's fixes with the GPS and the capacitive buttons but I don't want to mess with too many fixes a modder has done til I get more comfortable with doing things to the phone.

Yeah I saw that in the front forums and frankly I don't believe it at all. Samsung has not instilled much reason to believe them at this point. When I look at my screen and see there is an update ready then I'll believe it.

Keep in mind, you won't see an update available if you are running a ROM other than stock...

you can always odin back to stock in a couple seconds,,,or wait a couple days till someone does a custom rom for froyo,,,,,but if you have something like Superdark rom on your phone, whats the rush for Froyo? Flash video?

That's been a question of mine too X. I have said all along the gps and other minor issues should have been fixed long ago. Even better perhaps it should have not made it out of bug testing for general release. But for me DJ05 will just about make it more than perfect.

ill be waiting till some one comes out with a custom rom. but i am waiting for the 3.5 jack on my car dock to work. it erks the crap out of me that i cant use it.

You know I didn't consider that either... We bought one of these car docks when we got our phones. It was returned a few days later when we learned it wouldn't work (Even though we were told it would, Verizon had tested it themselves or they wouldn't sell it). Ummm OK. But that's my point exactly, It's not that we never have got the update or a maintenance release, it's the fact they shipped the phone and sold it knowing it had problems. All 4 carriers got bad publicity from this and Samsung too. It's a shame really because the phone is actually growing on me since I started tweaking it and making it what it should have been from the beginning.

The path I took was rooting, installing clock work and then going to cleaned roms. If you stay away from kernels (esp voodoo) you should be pretty safe. Just stay away from odin after cwr is running, back up with clock work, and you should be good.
