I find that a lot of people expect magic to happen in very difficult situations when taking pictures. I have seen a lot of very good results, and some poor ones. The poor ones were due to a difficult situation and hoping for the best instead of using some thought before the picture was taken to make it better. Also I tend to use snapseed or other editor to fine tune the image anyway. Rule of thumb, get best image you can initially and fine tune later if needed. Don't expect miracles sometimes and then blame the hardware. This is in general and not directed at you directly either.

Thing I want most right now is a big screen but I just can't do that notch on the 3XL.

Theo, it's right in settings for cryin' out loud! Just turn the notch off and make it look exactly like a P2 screen, even to the rounded corners! I've experimented with and without the notch. For the past two days my Pixel 3 XL has not had a notch and I'm going to leave it that way.

Hey Gary, I know you can do it but it's like double the height of the status bar right? Does your status bar and icons stay up there?

I was playing with a V40 and the notch is only as high as the status bar and when you turn it off it looks great.

OK. With the notch turned OFF on my P3XL...
I place my P2XL side-by-side with my P3XL.
I set both screens on the first page of "settings".
The screens are absolutely and perfectly identical in size.
The status bars are now in exactly the same place.
There is no difference whatsoever except in whiteness.

I believe Google is going to change it to give you the option to put the notifications back up when the notch is off or at least I hope they do.

I really liked the screen on my 2 XL and didn't think I had a problem with it. However, putting the two phones side-by-side with screen brightness at 100% on both, the difference is night-and-day. The 3 XL screen is far, far, far superior in brightness and color. When looking at the first screen of "settings", the 2 XL has a definite blue tint and the 3 XL is absolutely white. The 3 XL screen is in a totally different league.

I find it amazing how people will just grasp at anything to try to justify NOT getting a phone.

If you want a sammy, go there, get a sammy. If you want a Pixel, stay here with the cool kids and get a pixel.

At the end of the day, what do you like? The flashy sports car with the flux capicitor, that is laggy and has it's own issues. Or your standard Cadillac / Lexus / BMW. Not the flashiest but runs like a beast and is NEVER in the shop

I think most people would be happier with their phones if they stayed away from places like this. You come here and see what others are bothered by, then become bothered by it yourself.

Back to the camera/display discussion. I am very happy with both. My wife, despite being an iOS fan, generally wants me to take pictures of kids and events because she likes my camera better. After a couple days of usage, the camera is excellent for stills. I agree with those that mention the video. The few I have shot have not been great. I am surprised at how quickly the notch went away for me. I think they did a good job of programming the OS to interact with the dead space well. I can't say I'm a fan of the notch, but I do think of the spaces to the left and right of the notch as space gained.

Well I came from the OG Pixel XL, which I thought was fine, but the screen is clearly better.

Interesting....I have been ok with the video

I took 3 of my son's cross country meet today, just 20 second clips. One was a little jumpy as I panned to follow him running by, a second took a bit to get focused on the runners. Both were tough videos because the subject (my kid of course ) did not take up much of the frame. I blame the jumpiness on how Google does OIS.

I think overall, in most situations I will use it, I will be happier with it. On my limited sample though, I hoped for better.

Haven't used the camera much yet, but this display on the 3XL is a huge improvement over the 2XL. I'm glad Google went with Samsung this year as the supplier vs LG. LG clearly still hasn't perfected their manufacturing.

I think the screen is crisp and the colors are perfect.

Well I probably would just pick one except every option available seems to have compromises and is lacking somewhere and if I'm going to drop close to a grand I want the most for my money that fits what I need and want. It would also be nice to get a little extra for that and not just settle for what it is but it appears no matter what I'm going to have to settle and the problem is I don't want a Samsung because I've been down that road with their software, it's not for me. I've played with a note 9 a couple times now and it's just not for me. Between my S7, LG G6 Moto G4 and this Pixel 2 I'd say the Moto G4 was the one that I had no problems with save for the camera. The camera just wasn't good. But Moto doesn't make anything with a good camera at this point.

I honestly am at the point where I might just keep the Pixel 2 and deal with whatever Google decides to do with it just to have the camera.

Not quit sure what you want. You said you would have to settle no matter what. The note 9 has every option under the sun so does the V 40 for the most part. The device you seem to want doesn't exist. Your either going to have to keep your pixel 2 or "settle" for something else. Yes its a thousand dollars. But if it's not for you that's cool too. Maybe you'll find this device you seek. Try the Huawei Mate 20 line. Those look like good devices also.

Theo, wasn't pointing to you in particular, more of a general observation of people that come to these forums.

I certainly get not wanting to spend this kind of change. Same reason I never buy new cars, get 1 a year or two old, let someone else pay the depreciation.

That said.... I am typing this on my original XL...... I do not want to pay 899 for a new XL3..... As of today, I... Have.... Resisted.

But I already know, by black Friday I will either already have one in my hand or have it on order.

You have a 2xl. Admit it... Have you had a better phone? Even after a year, lag? Had to reset?

Quite frankly, if someone is going to buy an Android phone. Unless they like tweaking their phone all of the time..... Why would you buy anything other than a Pixel at this point?
