Touch buttons are dead!

Unfortunately I dropped for a second my Razr Maxx in a sink, in an instant turned it off, wiped it and left it for 48 hrs in a rice bowl. Then turned it on, works perfectly, no lags, but those 4 touch buttons at the bottom of the screen are unresponsive. They are lighted but dead, the worst part is I can't use backspace, the only way to get back to the desktop is to restart the phone. Is there any combination that would replace the backspace or home button at least? I've already bought a S3 Samsung but I still miss my beloved Maxx!

Root, install safestrap, put the ROM Droid HD on, now you have the home button and back button on the screen.

The option should be in there. You can get Droid HD from that same site.
Also, you can check the sticky on the forum for rooting and roming your phone. Refer to that for a very detailed walk through on how to do everything.
Edit: Now that I am on my compiuter, I can link you to everything a little easier.
So, the sticky I was referring to, right here. http://forums.androidcentral.com/droid-razr-maxx/211222-how-root-install-safestrap-custom-roms.html
And the link to the Droid HD ROM; [Rom][1.2]Droid Hd --Updated 12/4/2012 - DroidRzr.com

Now, I have never used the Droid HD ROM, I've only used the Arctic HD ROM, which is essentialy the same thing, minus the on screen buttons. Hope it all works out for you.

Thx a bunch. The issue is that none of the droidrzr.com links work for me. That's really weird.

TYVM I'm getting it down atm...I'm in EU with GSM, using ICS 4.0.4 system version 673.94.328.XT910.AsiaRetail.wn.03. Do you think it's good for me?

With my limited knowledge that ROM will not work on gsm phones. Since you said this isn't your daily driver phone, ask this question in the rooting thread i posted earlier. It might take time, but someone who has a gsm phone can chime in with the correct answer.

There could be a line code added in system/build properties in order to have softkeys onscreen, but only a senior dev could teach me how to do that

I accidentally set my phone down in a glass of ice water too. After a few days of flickering/bizarre screen movements, etc. it started working. The buttons at the bottom have gone in and out of working for the last 6 weeks. Most of the time the buttons work fine but occasionally the menu pops up and down repeatedly with the touch vibration triggering. Pushing the off/on button seems to help. This will happen frequently for a few hours or days and then go away for a few days+. The microphone didn't work consistently for a week and it does now, though it too has died once or twice in the last 2 months.

Overall the phone is 95% back to normal with the screen perfect and just the mic and menu/back buttons acting finicky occasionally. I tried the rice solution as well as putting it with rice into a toaster oven to 125F. I don't think the extra heat helped and maybe it caused the buttons to not work correctly (melting contacts internally?).

That's the secret answer for soft buttons on the screen. This line has to be added in system folder at the bottom of build.prop
My gratitude for pikakai from xda-developers for this brilliant idea.
My beloved Maxx is back to life again now.
