Touchscreen response varies with placement

I've noticed that I get good typing response when I have my Nexus 7 held in my hand(s); when I lie it on a hard surface (table, etc.) it will be good or maybe require firmer presses; if it is propped at any angle by its case (moko slim folding) or a softer surface the response is bad, or there is none at all. This is not lag. I also have a military shield screen protector on it.

Anyone experience this? Is it the screen protector, or just that it needs to be on a firm surface? I didn't notice anything, nor use the 7 for very long, before I put on the screen protector. The issue is mostly with single presses, maybe a swipe, not really for pinching.

This is a known issue with some Nexus 7 devices. Have you updated to the most recent Android OS software?

Yes, I've got the latest OS update. I'm not experiencing any typing lag or ghost input like I've read about others' experiences.

Is this likely a hardware issue? I might as well remove the screen protector to make sure, but the device is great in all other respects.

Touch improves on a "soft" surface with headphones in...and I found options to fix this with root. Hopefully a future official update does too. Thanks.
