Touchstone Mod for the S3

Its good to know that non bumper cases work with the touchstone!

I just noticed you mentioned "carbon touchstone". What exactly is that?

Sorry - make that "Car-borne"... as in the Touchstone I have in my car!

Well after 3 days of messing around, sanding, fitting , and wiring I got my touchstone wireless charging working. The awesome part is that I have my otterbox case on it.. I'm loving it.

I've got my touchstone mod working, the magnets are working great for holding it in place in my car. Has anyone had any trouble with the charging keeping up with the draining? I've only had the phone for a week, so maybe I just need to tweak some things or maybe I got a lame battery, but with gps and bluetooth audio going the charge just can't keep up. Looking at the usage chart, it appears to be all screen that is draining the battery so for now I'm just navigating by voice directions only, maybe flip the screen on for upcoming turns or something. Just wondering what other experiences have been.

Thanks!

Touchstone charging really has slower capability to charge since lower "amperage" (not sure if that's the right term:-) ) gets to the phone.

On long drives when I am just going straight for more than 10 miles I just turn my screen off. It gets "positive" charging but it takes a while. But most if the time when I use the navigation, I have "negative" charging.

So this is a little after the fact... but I was looking to do some sort of wireless charging as well. Shame on me, but I bough this. I got one of the new airdocks and the navigation feature of google maps doens't really work anymore. I have come to the conclusion that the charging adapter in the phone was the problem. It interfered with the GPS and more (my phone became very slow). I'm wondering if people are having the same issue with this mod?

Thanks.

Qi and Touchstone are not compatible with each other, but they are very similar in mechanism. AFAIK, the biggest difference is that Touchstone has strong magnets to align and hold the device, while Qi relies on gravity, sticky pads (or micro-suction foam in case of Airdock). One of my Touchstone-modded phones, not SGS3, had a problem with GPS malfunctioning in close proximity with the charger base's strong magnets. It was the same result with the charger connected to or disconnected from the power source, so I'm pretty sure the magnets were the issue. My 3 other phones (different models) had no issues.

Just want to update this thread. I have been using this mod for more than a year before I opted to stop using it.

I noticed some peculiarities.

The device would over heat often. Prompting me to remove the device from the touchstone. I didn't think it was a problem so I just remove it when it becomes too hot. After a while, the overheating became shutting down. It would happen even if it is just plugged straight to the USB cable in the car. This prompted me to discontinue using it. While this was happening I also noticed my battery life shorten. I simply attributed this to the age of my s3. So I bought a new battery.

With the new battery I still experienced overheating and shortened battery life. I'm guessing that time it could be the numerous updates that's been pushed to the device since I have been reading shortened battery life complaints here in the forums.

The time came when I broke my s3 screen and repairing it would not be costly effective. So my friend let me borrow her s3 while waiting for a new phone.

The s3 of my friend was almost the same age as mine. She never did the touchstone mod. It is updated to the latest version as well and both of us are with att.

No overheating, no shutting down, and battery life was a lot better.

I'm just guessing here but I think the heat the touchstone brings to the phone was detrimental to the phone's health. The constant high temperatures must have messed up some circuitry inside.

Just sharing...

I have this mod. I did it a little bit different. My S3 was bought at launch. It has never been restored. I do not experience anything like that some times it does get hot. But that's because the is an app running in the background.

It's great to know that I am an isolated incident!

Just wanted to share my experience.
