I am expecting the Note 8 to arrive in the next couple of days. Besides visiting the local Verizon store, how can I transfer everything from my Note 4 to the new phone? Thanks for your help.

Samsung smart switch,or make sure current phone back up to Google and Samsung when you sign in it'll ask if u want to restore from what ever device you have,I have multiple and it always works

I have a ton of apps on the Pixel XL that I don't want on my Note and also on the old Lg G3 I am currently using so I think I'll just restore the google stuff from google and do the apps one at a time.

My S8+ came with a dongle and instructions to do a direct transfer from my S7e. I just hooked it up and it essentially did all the rest. I had already backed up the SD card separately but it did that also. I would expect the Note 8 to have the same dongle.

I back everything up to Google and Samsung then just sign in on the new phone and xfer that way. I do my apps 1 by 1 though. With an AT&T app I get my texts too. Smart Switch was causing problems for some N7 users last year.

Same here. I used SmartSwitch on my note 7 and it took a while. Then I ended up resetting and reinstalling anyway. Tried SmartSwitch again when my replacement note 7 came in and had issues again.

I'm just going with a fresh install this time around.

I use SmartSwitch AND Samsung Backup/Restore - each one has a few glitches. Whatever SmartSwitch misses, backup/restore fills in the gaps! I only end up with a couple of minor manual settings to do by hand afterward.

Know what? I have tried backing up everything through google twice and both times it failed or just didn't work. Smartswitch however has been pretty consistent.

Does the Smart switch transfer the data along with the program?

Yes, if it works right. I plan to back up using Google, my Samsung account and Smart Switch just to cover all the bases. (and because I have had issues with each completing full transfers in the past).

I use one of the tools already noted in this thread, then I usually do a selective restore to the new device (Samsung SmartSwitch). It's best to do content only and setup the rest clean. (you can do it anyway you want tho, that's the beauty of this. So many options)

Cheers,
BR

There will be one person on here complaining about the phone that installed everything from their old phone and didn't do a clean install, when in actuality it's got nothing to do with the phone

I used Syncios Data Transfer when I switch phones going from Android/Android or iPhone/Android or Android/iPhone. It works great!

Highly recommend fresh install and restore data only. I've seen too many threads about lag and other issues that appear to be related to full Smart Switch transfer.

Just make sure your photos and docs go to Google or Samsung Cloud, and that you have your data backed up in your Samsung account. If you are using the stock Samsung apps for everything (web, SMS, etc) it makes it pretty easy.

When you get your new phone log into the Googles and manually install your apps. Then log into your Samsung account and all your SMS and other Samsung specific data will be restored. Poof, done, no lag

My 2 cents

I've never had an issue with Smart Switch (and got a lot of practice with it during the Note 7 fiasco!).

One thing I'd recommend is to take screen shots of all of your screens. Every time I restore, some apps are always missing, plus the screen shots let me configure the new phone close to the way I had it previously.

also, some apps allow you to backup your settings, such as email accounts, et. Nova allows you to backup/restore your desktop settings as well.

I think that if you start with a fresh install, then reload all the previous apps that you are used to running in the background anyway, you will end up in pretty much the same place as a full transfer, but I will agree with you on general principle and add one other suggestion based on painful past experience.

When you first get the phone, you are going to want to use it immediately and not have to wait hours (or even long minutes) for it to finish restoring everything.

So as above, start the phone up, log into Google or your Samsung account. Manually install or selectively restore ONLY the apps that you absolutely need to use right then. Spend the rest of the day just enjoying your new phone; and set a reminder to yourself to setup the rest of the installs or restores before you go to bed, or when you know you won't be using it for a few hours.

This time around, I'm installing just my contacts, 5 memes that I always use on FB and like 5 apps. Lol that's it.

WI'll I end up with duplicates if I bring in my Google contacts and then use Smart Switch?

We think alike Bert! I use the same system... I still have folders with screenshots from my Note 7 and my Note 5 on my PC! Best way to remember WHAT you have and HOW you had it arranged...
