Transplanting a leather back?

Is it feasible to transplant a leather back from one Moto X (2014) to another? My wife cracked the screen on her customized X with a red leather back, which is no longer available from Motomaker. So I'm wondering if I could buy a plastic backed model from Amazon and transplant the leather back onto it from the old phone. (yes, I could get a 2015 X from Motomaker, but those are too big, and don't have AMOLED display, which are deal breakers)
