TrevE's Logging TestApp

Like many others, I migrated here from the Optimus S forums... after getting pretty well versed in different ROMs, etc.

**be careful with the Logging TestApp if you're worried about CIQ**

I was reading CNET and a bunch of other reports about Carrier IQ and got real pissed. Like a complete dumbass, I downloaded TrevE's "solution", the Logging TestApp and went ahead and ran the program to get rid of CIQ *without* having done a backup of my precious new Marquee

Again, I'm a dumbass, but that's why I'm looking for any suggestions ;)

My new Marquee is NOT completely bricked, however it has basically been transformed into a dumbphone - most of the apps, including gmail, market, etc. (though strangely, not the browser) have been affected and disabled (they'll open up, but when I try to do anything - open a link - they'll just keep renewing this blank white screen). My guess is that the Logging TestApp removed some critical files needed to pass along information to the outside world - which are bull**** anyway, seeing as it's data being collected by CIQ. Nonetheless, it basically has rendered my phone pretty disabled, save for browser, SMS and regular phone function.

I'm a diehard fan of reading these forums because of the collaborative efforts and selfless exploration that goes into advancing our phones. This post basically serves as both a warning to those who are pissed about CIQ (and thinking about trying to remove it) and trying to tease out any suggestions/advice.

thanks guys

I would recommend backing up your contacts and important files now, as according to your description some features still work, and then doing hard reset.

To hard reset go to Settings>Privacy>Factory data reset.

Before doing the reset I would remove the microSD card so it does not get formatted by mistake.

Thanks for the suggestion... I had already tried that, and no dice. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the apps too.

The weird part is, some parts of the apps work, but other parts just make them either crash or do the white-screen thing.

Good thought though.

Are you getting an error message while trying to factory reset? Or is the phone still the same after successful reset?

Factory reset will not restore system files, if you have root you could download a system dump and compare it to yours then replace the altered/missing files.

Yeah, its rooted and yeah, Bartek, nothing changes with the hard reset... FFH is right in that theres sysyem files probably missing.

And im gonna do the noob thing and ask, FFH, any idea where id find a system dump? Thats the kinda thing im really unfamiliar with.

I think your best bet is to use the LG support tool and reload the default software. I am at work now and cannot access the sites needed to link to so I can post the files you need. Give me a few hours and when i get home I will post it up for you.

I have seen it posted on XDA in the LG Black section, it was posted by a Marquee user, cant find it at the moment. They were using it to build a Gingerbread port.

Another thing you could do is to read up about the app and maybe you can find which files it modifies.

Wow, I was about to post about this app- glad (or rather, sorry) someone tried it before I could discuss it here. It does say "nandroid backup your phone before running", and since we don't really have access to doing that (yet), I wasn't sure how safe this really is to perform.

Thanks to tcaudill01 for having the dump available. And snap323 for being the guinea pig this time. :/

Hopefully we'll have custom roms eventually that do away with things like carrier IQ. They say that CIQ is not only a security threat, but having it can cause slow downs and poor battery life. That's something we can look forward to removing. :)

Thanks, all for the input. The funny thing is, my phone is still mostly functional, except for email (both gmail and the regular email app won't load email messages). Somehow got Market to work again (mostly).

Here's what I've done thus far.

Flashed kdz with that weird russian sw - acted like it was flashing, then just sat there for hours, only 7% or so of the way through. Fail.

Used LG Mobile Support program - failed at first, then redownloaded, installed all the drivers again and all, and then it did the same thing as the russian prog - acted like it was flashing, and then just sat, about 14% of the way

I have the cab, the kdz and the bin files, all for LS855, just not sure how to successfully flash. I tried once unrooted, but then read somewhere that you *do* have to be rooted.

I've flashed a ton of ROMs before, but there's always specific instructions how to do it, and it's always a rar/zip file. I'm still noob enough that cabs and kdzs are way outta my comfort zone. Any thoughts on whether or not to be rooted (those instructions that are written out in the root post work perfectly)?

If nothing else, glad I could warn everyone else not to run TrevE's CIQ killing app. Apparently it kills one's email too ;)

Ok, finally fixed my phone. Currently rooting and causing all sorts of delightful mayhem.

first off, a huge thank you to tcaudill01, farfromuman and plonko for the help! Much appreciated.

Here's how I fixed it, and I guess the process for anyone who needs to force a reflash of the stock rom when other methods are being stubborn.

I used the .cab file provided by tcaudill on the previous page (sorry, I don't know how to link to posts). After fiddling around forever, I finally dl'd KP500 and followed the instructions of this old, brilliant OptiS thread: http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg...ing-ota-ls670vc-vd-using-kp500-diag-mode.html

Obviously, you gotta replace the ls670 in all the command lines with ls855, make sure that the KP500 folder is on C:, and that the cab file is in that folder as well. A couple stupid details are that you *have* to rename the cab file (it initially has an enormous name) USING CMD - apparently Windows Explorer is a little too much for KP500 to handle - to simply, LS855ZV9.cab (don't worry, often WExpl doesn't show the ".cab" file extension but it's there).

After a ton of misfires (and running both programs in compatibility mode didn't work for me, though others claim it does), I finally got fed up with Windows 7, and dusted off my old Acer netbook that runs XP. Transferred the files over and ran it once, beautifully, and successfully. Took a while, cuz the poor little netbook's got the processing power of a Ti-83 calculator, but it eventually went through.

Hope that might help someone, somewhere down the road, and again, many thanks to all who read and gave input.

Bottom line, be *very* careful about TrevE's app on this phone, and generally be really wary of messing around with any system files until we at least break into recovery or find some way to Nandroid.

In the future, please use the search function first before asking redundant questions.

Here is your link:

You need to download "ROM Manager" from the market and install the LGE Optimus Black recovery.
Read the link I gave you before you install this and be aware that not everything works in this recovery. I have been working for a while to taylor this to our phone without much success (but a couple of bricked phones). Dishe is now on board and has my file info. He is working with some guys from XDA that will hopefully get a fully working recovery for us up and running soon.

I'm pretty good about using the search button, but I'm just so new to this that I didn't realize that CWM recovery was the correct link. :(

Thanks again for all the work you've been doing on this forum.
