Trouble Rooting Nook Color

In the past I rooted a Nook Color for a family member, using the SD card method. When the 1.4.1 update came out, the person updated. They have had trouble accessing features we had previously added(market and such). They gave me the Nook to correct the problem. Playing with the Nook, I find that if I power the Nook off and then power back on the rooted features are there. The SD card has been removed, so I don't know why it would do this. The other problem the Nook will revert back, when trying to get back to the home screen. I'm a nnob that followed the directions I found here and on other websites when I originally rooted. So my questions are: Do I have to reroot to get back to where the Nook was previously? If I have to reroot, do I need to restore the 1.4.1 version? Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated.
