Trying to put it into download mode

I have been trying to put my device in download mode to root it. but it never goes into the screen, it reboots and pops up a message at the bottom stating "currently unable to download. please try again later" what am i doing wrong. any help would be great.

How are you trying to do this? I have never seen this. Is your phone completely stock? And I have to ask, a Sprint GS3?
