Trying to switch to Nexus 5 from 5S, questions for experts....

Re: trying to switch to nexus5 from 5s, questions for experts....

....

I have tried roku, plex twonkey and the idea of streaming local media kills the quality so plex/twonkey is a compromise, I use airvideo to see all home videos to see when outside home using runtime transcoding, using remote to stop a channel on roku and then till I found what next to play is waste of time, on iphone all these things works much much better and while can play podcast playlist on airplay while search for another video on safari youtube makes things very simple and very very easy multitasking…. While watching youtube or video podcast on airplay you can just simple swipe to skip video by 30 sec, or continue to browse other apps while videos are playing on xbmc airplay, with roku u r stick to use at home while iphone is with you all the time so on the move you can continue to stream netflix and when come home just switch to airplay from that point

....

What's your network setup like? All of my movies and shows are in 720p and MKV files. I use the Plex server on my PC and use the Netgear N600 router. I had to buy a new wireless PCI card to make use of the double bandwidth that the N600 provides. Now I'm streaming in 720p without it stopping to buffer like it used to. What do you mean when you say it "kills the quality"? You can choose the quality you want to stream in, either for a particular file or via some global settings. Plex is really versatile. When I got Chromecast I started using it to stream YouTube videos, but use Twonky to stream local content from my phone.

I've always wanted a dedicated media server! Are you using a NAS?

Re: trying to switch to nexus5 from 5s, questions for experts....

Some android apps will say they aren't compatible with the new version when they really are. It's up to the developer to update their compatibility settings. If it isn't compatible, it's up to the developer to update their app to make it compatible.

And that is the heart of the problem, developers are not guided enough, everyone is kinda free to do things there way. Samsung S4 support fitbit for a while. typically OS should just expose certain APIs to confirm if that phone support bluetooth 4.0 LE or not. if its available that all the necessary drivers should be provided by OS (as its bluetooth standards). every app developer does not need to do make changes in his app to support it.....

When a new iphone comes out all the existing apps will work just fine, no device support issues. OS takes care of Bluetooth implementation on its own does not require developers to build apps for every diff android brand or version.

This is he issue with MS windows as well, not only android.

Today is the third time outlook sync stopped happening (last time and today I had to remove and add account again to make it work), am nearing 15 day return policy so will be returning it now....

if google can not provide perfect support for exchange emails....this device become useless for me anyway (smartphones are so relying to emails now a days)

Yes I have another HP micro nl40 server with 4*3Gb disks running windows 2012 nas server. XBMC sees remote nas folders just fine.

720p streaming is way inferior to 720P 20mbit quality, and skip/forward takes too much time, with xbmc I can do 32x fwd without any issue

This.

None of the OSs are perfect for everyone. I think that Android is the best overall for most people, but even I would still recommend iOS for some people, because there are things iOS does better. Things Android had to compromise on to get it's flexibility.

Identify the most important items for you, and then pick the platform that delivers those items the best. It sounds like iOS delivers the best experience for the stuff the OP cares most about.

I actually like that it does not come up automatically. Because it would block part of the screen when I am trying to read it. I personally do not like the OS to think for me on stuff like that. I would rather that the keyboard pop up QUICKLY when I tell it to.

That is touch-response, another area iOS phones have always been good at.

You should see that it does not come up even when you have only one box to enter password...rest all screen is empty (its about user friendliness)

am planning to try nokia 1520 now, though I can say that if bigger device and money is primary decision factor for you and you prefer smooth and best phone experience and getting things done faster and predictable and don't like fighting to make every new thing work than buy iphone...

The iPhone is not as intuitive as a lot of people think. Where it shines is UI smoothness and touch response. But the lack of a back button is unnecessarily annoying IMO. Not only to me, but to friends of mine that have iPhones. Using an iPhone to me feels like trying to kung-fu fight in a closet.

The back button is persistent on android devices...it is always in the same place, always looks the same, and will always back you out of whatever you're in. On iOS, this is done via software in the app. There were times when it would either not be there or would look different.

My former roommate needed my help changing his wifi settings one time a while back and neither of us could figure out how to get into settings to do it. That was before iOS7 though, so maybe it is easier now.

You're right, it is all about user friendliness. And the user friendliness that I prefer, is for the keyboard to NOT pop up in my face all the time. Look, this is all a matter of preference, so stop telling us that its wrong or that its not user friendly.

I don't think this is a problem at all. Actually, this is pretty much the whole philosophy of Android. The freedom to do things your way. It's not perfect, but neither is being heavily regulated like IOS. However, I prefer Android the way it is, and see it as more of a strength. Don't give your money to developers that don't provide timely updates to their apps.

I didn't have to fight to get anything to work on my Nexus 5, it just works. It was all pretty predictable too. No problems at all.

This is the one of the example screen where keyboard should automatically popup....(entering password for wifi network screen)

Not necessarily. There are lots of wifi networks that now use protected wifi setup, meaning you can push a button on the router to allow access to devices withing a short period of time without entering the password. In such a network situation, bringing up the keyboard may well not be desirable. Or I may have tapped on the wrong network, and I may just want to cancel. By the way, the keyboard will come up if you tap into the password field.

This is the nextissue app which has more than 100000 downloads still it says not compatible with nexus 5 (there is no need to guess in ios, it always works in new os version)

Really? At the beginning of iOS 7:
However, app-testing company uTest – which tests web and mobile apps for customers like Google, HBO, and Amazon through a global crowdsourced community of 100,000 testers in 200 countries – has told Business Insider that 90 per cent of pre-exisiting iOS apps are having trouble with the new system.
All new versions of every OS breaks some apps. It may not have broken your favorite app, but to claim it doesn't break apps is just not accurate.

.

Well ur definition of user friendliness is not standard, usually it means minimum effort not maximum.

And you have never been a developer I can say based on ur comment, so u wont understand

You must be living in diff world, cause u have not suggested a single solution to the probs I mentioned on this thread, or maybe its because u don't know what u r missing....

For sake of argue u can say that, it doesn't change the fact at that time 70% of screen is empty anyway, FYI protected wifi setup is not supported by nexus 5.

Yeah I use about 200 apps, actively 30+ and never saw them break, not even once out of those 30 apps....
