Turn off landscape mode in Gmail (very slow?)

Switching from Portrait to Landscape mode in gmail is very slow - so slow it's annoying me. I can count anywhere from 2-7 seconds (one one thousands, two one thousand, three on thousands, etc) it takes for my phone to switch between these modes in Gmail.

is there a way to turn this off, so the phone stays in Portrait?

I want to make sure it doesn't switch by accident when I have the phone tilted slighlty

Rotates fast for me, but i think all you can do is turn off global "auto rotate"
