Turn off startup sound?

same here. I have root and granted superuser rights and I still can't rename. Gives me the options but after i rename it says "sorry, operation failed". I've tired moving it and deleting it with no success.
Make sure / (root) is mounted as read/write.

Push settings , push sound, click volume go to bottom slide system off ... My S 3 mini has no more start up or shut down but all my notification, my own what's app incoming message alert , messages and ringtones I have set with my own sounds all work

Try Silent Boot in the Play Store

Thanks a million! I can't stand start up sounds. This worked like a charm. No rooting and no renaming files on my new Galaxy S2.

Going tomorrow to activate my new GS2. I know it's old news to most, but it's brand new to me. Had a the first Droid X with VZW (not too bad but have had bad experiences with Moto), currently have the Thunderbolt with VZW (a lot better phone but hate the start up sounds but forum solution didn't silence the thunder clashing-extremely annoying). Switching to the GS2 at Boost tomorrow.

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!!

Using Root Explorer and renaming the poweron and poweroff OGG files worked perfectly, thank you! I'm using Insanity V3 for my Galaxy S4 (tmo) and that was the only part that I didn't like.

All you have to do is : Go to Settings-Sound-Volume-System , turn the system volume down the whole way , and you will not hear the start up or shut down sounds. You do Not have to root your phone. This is for the Galaxy S3.

Yeah! This works for me. To configure all other sounds I am using Smarsound Profiles - ugly interface but works fine if you figured out how it works.

Before turning your phone off, turn on silent mode. Then when you will start it, it will not play any sound. It works for me.

i found a solution [rooted] for Nokia 1 TA-1047:

change the filenames of the following files to *.wav.dis (or something):
system/CDA/600ID/Power-on-sound/boot.wav
system/CDA/600RU/Power-on-sound/boot.wav
system/CDA/600WW/Power-on-sound/boot.wav

after reboot, no more sound.
