Two separate conversations with the same contact in messenger

I am finding it very annoying when I send a text to a number, i receive the response back in a different thread. I've noticed that I have to add the +61 in front of the phone number to stop this happening, but even that doesn't always work.

This is also happening to me. I'm on Nougat. And has nothing to do with the number formatting. Far as I can determine.

Send to be whether I reply directly, or if I find them in my contacts that makes the difference
